You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment (2024)
Within the first 25 Mins of the first episode - boldfaced absolute lies are presented as FACT.
As the title of this review states. We are 'told' in the first half of the first episode that Meat eating was almost non-existent during human evolution...
A 'Plant Based Dietary Innovator' tells us "... in the context of human history, you'll find that most populations did not eat meat or dairy except in very, very small amounts, if at all." This is a straight-up lie. Library stacks of papers evidence through anthropology - archaeology, evolutional biology etc that animal protein and fat are pivotal and profound in their contribution to human evolution - we quite simply would NOT exist as we are biologically - physiologically - intellectually today without them - FACT.
Here is a press release through Pr Newswire from Trudiagnostic - who collaborated with Stanford on this research:
'LEXINGTON, Ky., Jan. 5, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- As Netflix's newly released docuseries 'You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment' catches the attention of nutrition and health experts alike, researchers behind the Stanford sponsored study say context is crucial when determining key takeaways from the novel experiment.
In a medRxiv preprint study titled 'Unveiling the Epigenetic Impacts of Vegan vs. Omnivorous Diets on Aging: Insights from the Twins Nutrition Study (TwiNS),' researchers from Stanford University and DNA methylation laboratory TruDiagnostic evaluated epigenetic profiles of participants featured in the Netflix docuseries; discovering novel connections between dietary regiments and epigenetic aging.
The experiment set out to answer the question of whether a healthy omnivorous or vegan diet would produce better health outcomes and metrics for various sets of twins over an eight week period; in which vegan participants saw a reduction in biological age across multiple age-calculating algorithms. These algorithms use DNA methylation to quantify biological age, and many show association to disease risk and overall health, thus making them informative clinical tools to assess aging and health.
"These groundbreaking findings underscore the potential of epigenetic clocks as real-time biomarkers, offering valuable insights into physiological changes, exemplified by weight loss in this study," explains Dr. Lucia Aronica of Stanford University. **"However, it is crucial to stress that a vegan diet lacks essential nutrients for optimal epigenetic processes. Without proper supplementation, there's a risk of long-term damage. As scientists, it is our duty to communicate this message clearly and emphatically, ensuring the public is well-informed about the nuances of dietary choices for their overall health,"** Aronica continued.
The discrepancy between the seemingly pro-vegan results, and long term impacts to epigenetic, biological aging rests in the study's short-term nature, spanning only two months for twin participants. Additionally, "the reductions that we see could also be due to the fact that the vegans had a lower caloric intake, relative to the omnivores, and also had increased fiber in their allocated diets," explained Varun Dwaraka, PhD of TruDiagnostic. "However, the fact that there was a significant decrease in multiple biological age clocks within eight weeks in the vegan diet is encouraging for short term diet application, and highlights the sensitivity of this test in nutrition."
This research is CLEARLY used loosely and selectively to fit the intended message the creators of this 'Documentary' want to push. Which gives the impression that this is yet again more Vegan Propaganda. Disingenuous, condescending, sanctimonious drivel.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (2022)
I waited for the conclusion before reviwing
The Fan Outrage before the show was even half way in just show how ridiculously entitled and stupid the so called 'fanbase' has become.
I grew up with the originals, grew to love the prequels. Loved all the stuff Filoni and Favreau has done. Despised the Sequels, and for good reason. But the level of unhinged rage that people pour have poured on this series tell you how impatient and idiotic some people are.
Yes it got off to a rocky start, the cam shaking is a pain and unpleasant, it's criminal that they didn't use more of John Williams score. But the conclusion, Obi-Wan's exercising of his anguish and demons to re-establish his connection to and relationship with the force of forgive himself and cleans himself of regrets and the past is glorious! Vader's acceptance of himself and who he is, Reva the padawan turned inquisitor, coming to terms with her past was also a nice arc.
Overall this series has added an extra layer of depth to the Originals and I for one have thoroughly enjoyed it, despite its faults.
Ignore the demented negativity and enjoy it for what it is.
Star Trek: Picard: Penance (2022)
I really wanted to be proven wrong
I've got a terrible feeling about this series. Trek like Star Wars the victim of cultural vandalism...
I wonder if the team are returning to 2024 to stop Trump from being re-elected. And hushing in a Dystopian Nightmare...
*Face palms* back to Netflix and DS9 for me.
Star Wars: The Bad Batch (2021)
The Ahsoka Factor & Omega
I held off posting a review until I'd given the show a chance to establish itself. The negative reviewers here, most of which focus on the 'Annoying character traits of Omega' seem to forget that this was the exact same complaint that fanboys vitriolic ranting was aimed at in the original Clone Wars getting on 14 years ago. And they were proven dead wrong. Ahsoka has become one of the most beloved Characters in the entire Star Wars Canon.
Dave Filoni along with Jon Favreau, are a godsend to this IP and if not for them, Star Wars, after the disaster, and Wilfil Act of Cultural Vandalism that was the Disney Sequal Trilogy would be in serious trouble.
This series is shaping up to be just as good as Clone Wars was/is. Give it a chance to mature and you will be rewarded for your pateince. Trust me.
The Expanse (2015)
Epic... The Expanse will go down as one of the greatest Sci-Fi Shows ever made.
I could gush about this show till blue in the face but what good would that do. The proof is in the tasting. It is mind boggling to me that this show was almost cancelled. It pushes all other Sci-Fi shows/series and movies aside to take the title. It is quite simple amazing.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
I left the cinema with my head spinning...
And after an hour or two of reflection became APOPLECTIC with rage...
I cannot describe how utterly enraged I am at what Disney has done to Star Wars. I will never be able to watch the original or prequels ever again and enjoy them in the same way.
The Witcher (2019)
Anya Chalotra Steals the Show!
Thoroughly entertaining show, but having not read the books of played the game found the timeline confusing at first.
But as about Anya Chalotra stole the show.
Zygote (2017)
Superb - Need to be a Full Feature!
As above,
What can I say, brilliant. Be good if they could 'Flesh it Out' excuse the pun.
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
STD - HAHA! They did think that through did they?
I don't often comment on series here...
However, STD is soulless garbage of the highest order. I cannot believe that along with JJ Abrams monstrosities this is what my beloved Star Trek has come too.
How the hell this has the rating it does is beyond my comprehension.
In the Shadow of the Moon (2019)
What do they say? "The road to hell is paved with good intentions"
A very slick and well made Sci Fi with an over used motif that pushes an horrific Political and Idealogical Message.
I read plenty of reviews about this Netflix production as I generally find Netflix movies to be poor and not worth my time. But the negative reviews spurred me to give it a watch just out of curiosity.
As many of the reviewers have already commented the Socio-political and Idealogical Message at the end of this movie, is beyond the pale. Terrifying. To think that a generation of receptive and potentially influenced young people could think that this message is morally and ethically acceptable is horrific.
Absolutely disgusting.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
The Shell...
They really messed this film up...
Sorry, GITS was one of those anime experience as a kid in the 90's that just blew the mind. Whilst they got some of the visual elements correct they ripped out its soul and philosophical thought invoking heart, leaving only the 'Shell' behind, it is a bland and unsatisfying experience compared to the 1995 anime - Which is one of the greatest Japanese pop culture contributions to film ever made.
If they had kept the original plot intact and script similar to the 1995 movie, gave it to someone like Ridley Scott or Nolan had actors that were representative of the characters, it might have stood a chance.
There is good reason that this movie bombed hard at the box office... The reaction from fans of the original was - You Cannot Capture the Magic of a Classic - They tried with Robocop... it failed... They've tried with Ghostbusters... and failed on and on and on so was mostly boycotted, those that had never heard of the movie... it would just look like any other cash-in on the current fandom around Japanese popular culture.
It is a poor sorry state of affairs when this generation are so utterly starved of original thought provoking, interesting and challenging cultural stimulation.
I really do feel sorry for Millennials... And I hope they do not try this with Akira...
Jihad: A Story of the Others (2015)
Denial
This is sugar coated, slickly shot, voiced with mellifluence.
It blames everyone and everything... It is racism, it's being in a western society, and it's due to isolation. It goes on and on, family oppression - state oppression, poor education and work opportunities.
Abu Muntasir's emotional moments seem forced and in my opinion lack genuine remorse, the range of people interviewed in very small indeed, the documentary simply does not discuss this subject with any depth what so ever. And this is a topic that needs some serious debate.
Not once is the 'Book' discussed, not ONCE is the Hadith discussed - in which - every Muslim has to follow as the word of god, which commands without any room for interpretation Jihad, the establishment of the Caliphate and Sharia Law through violence if necessary.
Breaking Bad: Ozymandias (2013)
I'm still rooting for Mr White.
Why you might ask? Because the writing in this show is of such high quality and the characters so well developed how you could not still want this guy to come out of it all in one piece and save his family and be redeemed!
Many people writing reviews here keep using the word 'evil' Walt's a bad man etc, etc ad infinitum, but the shows' writers have woven such a rich tapestry of a man's metamorphosis that it's hard to remember all the killing and deaths, but if you do you'll notice something.
Not one person that has been murdered or died directly at Walt's hands or at his behest was an innocent. Everyone was is some way involved with the manufacture, distribution and sale of Meth. He has consistently attempted to protect his family and save Pinkman from his own moronic antics however amoral his choices and actions have been. On that point, the words of Roslin to Baltar, in Battlestar Galactica, whilst in his cell come to the mind. That people facing death often see the world differently and morality, rules and ethics melt away and ones legacy: in this case, family and their survival is all that matters, it took me a while to understand that even his final threatening call to Skylar was a deception, absolving her completely.
This show is so well written that it's easy to overlook the fact that in most cases when things start to go bad for Walt, it is because of the stupidity of Pinkman and the young man's recklessness and lack of insight. At the end of this episode, I literally wanted to reach into the TV set and, beat Pinkman, to within an inch of his life and snap his neck! Now that is something I've never experienced watching a TV show before, and I most likely never will again.
So yeah, I'm still rooting for Mr White...
