From (2022)
From is just another string along series
"From" falls far short of expectations, leaving me thoroughly disappointed and unsatisfied. The series follows a pattern of haphazard plot development, seemingly concocted on the go to ensure viewers stay engaged. With an abundance of unresolved mysteries and an excessive amount of filler content, the show lacks the necessary closure and substance I seek in a TV series.
The lackluster storytelling becomes increasingly frustrating as the writers fail to provide meaningful resolutions to the numerous enigmas introduced. It feels as though the creators haven't put in the effort required to construct a cohesive and compelling narrative. The absence of a well-thought-out storyline ultimately undermines the viewer's investment in the show.
Furthermore, the excessive filler content only adds to the frustration. These unnecessary subplots and distractions not only detract from the main storyline but also hinder any potential progress in unraveling the mysteries. The series seems to prioritize stringing the audience along rather than delivering a satisfying and coherent viewing experience.
While my personal opinion leans towards disappointment and even a sense of being insulted by the lack of substance, it is important to acknowledge that different viewers may have varying tastes and preferences. It appears that "From" has managed to find an audience that appreciates its approach, even though it doesn't resonate with me.
Ancient Apocalypse (2021)
Good title for exercising critical thinking
Plenty of examples here where things are made to seem true just by association by statements that appear to support the arguments made, but really are just used for only that purpose in many cases.
Graham obviously is not doing this to save humanity from ignorance, and I do agree that old ways of thinking should be challenged, but this is just another example of how not to do it.
Graham is clear in his statement that he is a journalist, not archeologist or scientist. If he truly had the motivation to expose the "lies" from established archeologists, why not get the credentials and beat them at their own game?
Worth a watch for that purpose, educational material for critical thinking.
The Terminal List (2022)
An absolute Meh.
Nothing new or unique here, it is somewhat entertaining in lack of anything else, but nothing I would sit through again.
Casually mash up some budget Rambo, some Enemy of the state, and sprinkle in some gung ho navy seals action... left me with a sense of relief when it was over. Nothing to ponder, nothing that tickles the mind once it is off the screen. No emotional attachments that drags me back for more.
Maybe this appeals to the "Bros" but not to me.
How to Get Away with Murder (2014)
Murder, Sex, Vodka - Repeat
I initially had high hopes, but as so many other series, it eventually ties knots on knots of itself.
Eventually it is all a bunch of flawed humans doing anything to complicate their own lives, and in the meantime its sex, vodka and murders on repeat.
I guess that is a pretty accurate depiction of how life is?
The Mandalorian: Chapter 5: The Gunslinger (2019)
From Werner Herzog to... this?!
What is happening? Did they blow all the budget and creativity on the first three episodes just to get people to sign up to Disney+ and hope that would be enough?
Sure, there are some nice scenes visually, but plot, characters and acting feels flatter than the Tatooine dune sea and less lively than the Jundland Wastes.
Monsters: Dark Continent (2014)
One of the best, most realistic war movies ever
This movie get a lot of low ratings and bad reviews, most likely for one of two reasons; They expect a Science-fiction movie, very much in line with the first move, and are unable to take the move for what it is.
They don't have any particular expectations, and what they get is a war movie where the protagonists are not tough-as-nails, gung ho heroes, but very human, faulty, broken people who are in a horrible situation and react to that as humans do. Sure, they start out as most soldiers in war movies do, and unfortunately in real life too.
This is a great war movie, where the aliens are a metaphor, and the soldiers are human.
Entebbe (2018)
not worth your time unless you are a relative
Just not wort it unless you are a nationalist or family.
no truths are revealed. move along.
Annihilation (2018)
Near mediocre movie where a few details adds up to full score
I watched this without any expectations other than what comes with a title like "Annihilation".
Along the way there were many annoying things and illogical choices;
Why walk to the light house, why not take a sturdy armed marine vessel or a hover craft? (it is mentioned that they tried and failed, but not why it is ruled out)
Why no protection gear?
Why are they sauntering around?
and... many more practical/logical questions like these, but along the way, they are overshadowed by the terrifying yet beautifully novel threat they are facing.
Just the completely alien take on alien life is about the best i have seen or read in many years, not fantastical, not purposefully menacing, not flairfully effectful, just plausibly as alien as humanly imaginable, and pushing that boundary.
The team of female scientists are believable - not silly screaming nor desperate butch, though the leads 7 years of military training is next to unnoticeable, even in situations one would think they would show in pure muscle reflex.
I feel that i will revisit this move many times in years to come, both on screen and in my mind, and that is what makes a good movie; one that challenge me to think - not about, but beyond what i saw.
The Peanuts Movie (2015)
What a tremendously horrible movie
Painful to watch, the kid went on to play with her dolls after 7 minutes. We made a bad choice, but what kind of beasts like to watch this? I am happy to say that goes for none in my family, it was a waste of money. Politically dated and morally too. Xenophobic tendencies can be seen early in the flick when the dog is not allowed into the school. This is horrid. This comic should be put to rest for good, and good riddance. It was never funny, i grew up as a kid reading the cartoon and its just mind numbingly bad, it should not be published, its someone who has made a mistake! My mother warned me about these kinds of cartoons when i was a kid, i should have listened to her.
