Rebus (2024)
I trusted Rebus to Richard Rankin, and I was not disappointed
As a longstanding Rebus book fan I have never felt the TV adaptations captured the essence of Rebus.
When I found out Richard was playing John Rebus in a re-imagining I was intrigued as to how it would play out.
The show started with something that had a direct link to what is happening in the books, which showed me that Gregory Burke, the writer, really understood the trajectory Rebus is on.
Rebus is younger, healthier, but on a slippery slope with alcohol and cigarettes, conflicted over what compromises he is prepared to make as he tries to square The Rules and modern policing.
I look forward to finding out who the murderer was in a future series ...lots of future series' please.
Around the Sun (2019)
Clever, intriguing and life-affirming
I found the film much more emotional than I expected. Cara Theobold as Maggie was luminous, sweet, flirty & fiercely intelligent. Gethin Anthony as Bernard was charming, engaging & fascinated.
It was a little gem, intriguing and life-affirming. I loved it.
Outlander: Famous Last Words (2020)
Give Richard Rankin an Emmy...stat
Incredible episode, covering a really important story in the books in an interesting and engaging way.
Richard Rankin truly embodied Roger, a man out of time, suffering from the after effects of a horrific experience. He portrayed depression, resignation and a struggle for recovery, with very very little dialogue to help.
All the cast gave good performances, but Sophie Skelton and John Bell were outstanding as fellow trauma survivors.
Beautiful singing from Maria Doyle Kennedy as Jocasta Innes, as well as Sophie and of course, Richard (over the end credits). Bravo!
Sanditon (2019)
Austen, but not as we know it
A fresh approach to one of Jane Austen's unfinished works with some fabulous locations and costumes and more bare flesh than you'd expect. Sadly, we will never know how she would have ended it....and we still don't as the production left the ending...well...open, sort of.
Let's hope we get a second series to give us a suitably Austenesque happy ending.
