Game of Thrones (2011)
Did you read the books?
After reading some of the reviews here, I was very amused, mostly about the strong contrast in positive and negative opinions. First of all, just to clarify, I agree with the majority. I love the show, and it's great. As good and as mindblowing awesome as Breaking Bad? No, probably not. That is just not possible. Therefore I gave it only a 9, and it's anyway a bad idea to compare shows with each other.
When you review GoT, or read reviews, or watch it, or plan to watch it, there is one thing you have to keep in mind. Have you read the books?
People are complaining about the plot, the enormous amount of characters, the constant dying of those characters, and the slow pace. Well, considering that this show is based on literature of epic dimensions, the show is doing a great job adapting to it.
If you haven't read the book, the amount of characters and the storyline, might be confusing to you. Although the story has been already simplified. The slow pace is just a huge build-up, for the last books to come, what I expect to be one hell of a showdown.
If you don't like nudity and violence, don't watch the show and don't read the books. If you think it's to much to see an actor brother and sister pretending to have sex, well, don't watch the show.
My advice to anyone out there is to read the books. I did, and the show for me is now a tightly packed summary of them. Does it bother me? No, because I know how difficult and complicated it must be, to produce this show.
So when forming your own opinion about GoT, keep one thing in mind. The books. Have you read them, or not?
Life of a King (2013)
Inspiring
"Life of a King" is a good movie with a great story, good actors and an excellent Cuba Gooding Jr. as main character. It's all about morals, ethics and the meaning of life and constantly reminds us that we are responsible for our own actions.
Sure we've seen the same kind of movie before. "Dangerous Minds" for example to name just one. However, it does not get old and keeps you entertained the whole time. There was not one single boring moment. The chess "theme" I really liked. For once it's not football! And even as an experienced chess-player myself I can say that everything is totally legit and realistic.
Nothing more to say. Watch it.
The Counselor (2013)
it makes you think...
The rating is not fair to this movie in my opinion. I will give it a little bit more credit. I get the feeling that the people that scored it so low, are not getting it, or had a hard time following the story. So this should make you aware of the fact that this is not a movie that you should watch together with your best friend, while talking football, or shoes. You need to watch this movie with undivided attention and an open mind. Sure the story has holes and leaves things unspoken, but I think that is fully on purpose. It emphasizes the s***-storm that "The Counselor" finds himself in in my opinion, but I leave the rest of the interpretation up to you.
There's not much to say about the acting and the cast. I mean, names like Fassbender, Cruz, Diaz, Pit, they all speak for themselves. They probably haven't been challenged on set a lot. The characters they play...let's say you have seen them before and everyone of these actors can play them asleep. Which doesn't mean they are bad. I find them entertaining and that is what the movie does. It entertains you and makes you think. The writing is really good and again, it will make you think! The whole outcome of the movie is unexpected, and again, it will make you think!
To conclude: This movie makes you think!
The Returned (2013)
good try...but not a thriller...
This movie definitely adds to the zombie genre with its new idea and concept, that the zombie outbreak is already under control and people can be prevented from turning by a daily injection of some kind of vaccination. It focuses more on the social issues and emotional burden the people being involved have to face. It is interesting and has some good points. Acting is very good, as well as the production quality.
BUT
Don't expect hundreds of zombies. Don't expect splatter, gore and new unique methods of zombie-killing. This should be clear from the beginning and it's not a point of critique. As I said it's interesting. However, the story does not quite get there all the way. As original as the idea is, the whole story itself is not. There is something missing which is hard to grasp.
To conclude:
Drama? Yes! Horror? Barely. Thriller? No!
Movie 43 (2013)
Totally underrated!
This movie is not that bad, as everyone seems to believe. It is actually quite funny and I did have a good laugh throughout most of it. Yes, I agree that it is partly just ridiculous and you are sitting there wondering and trying to grasp the stupidity of it all. But you do this with a laugh and that's the point! The acting of all of the "stars" is very good (like you would expect them to be) and they carry the movie along and it definitely does not get boring. You constantly wonder what might come next.
Tastes differ, and so does humor. This is certainly a humor more of the black kind. It is very over the top (or under the belt) and reminded me partly of Monty Python or The Naked Gun. Its raw and sometimes shocking jokes are provocative and original at the same time.
I watched this movie together with my girlfriend, and her review of this would be: "This is so stupid!" She did not laugh as much as I did. Again, tastes differ!
If you can't laugh about farts, poop or chin-balls...don't watch it. Otherwise, take a look and don't take it serious. Just watch and laugh!
