Die Goldfische (2019)
Touchy road movie full of emotion and fun
Honestly, I never read a more cynical, self-righteous and callous review than that of WinstonNoCGI. This said, I think he is wrong in nearly every point. This movie uses the structure of what we know as typical German comedy, but it does something totally different: It is focused on human condition, not on the fast laugh. The cast does a great job in creating natural, living characters in an exaggerated and stylised setting. Camera and picture editing are awesome (including some fun references to movie classics). Everything is lighthearted, but not superficial. This movie is exactly what you'd expect it to be, and totally different at the same time. Give it a try. Maybe you love it like I did.
Submergence (2017)
Maybe the most un-American movie of the decade.
This film is slow, beautiful, emotionally subtle, full of (old.fashioned) dignity, and abstains from spectacular action. It is totally based in reality, and it examines two of the most important issues of today:
Life and its origin and the problem of (fake?) religious fanaticism.
It is very serious, so serious that it's almost not entertaining. You don't know what to think about it while watching, and you continue to ask yourself questions for hours and days after watching it. A feeling of vulnerability, concern and longing - by all means positive - will accompany you after watching, for a long time - provided you have a soul were able to get touched by the film.
For me, there are just two major weaknesses:
1. People and places are *to* beautiful and perfect.
2. It's to short for its pace. I want a 3.5 hours directors cut.
You have to know what you are doing when you go watch a Wim Wenders movie.
If you do so, you won't be disappointed.
After Earth (2013)
Cineasts, form your own opinion!
Reading all these scathing reviews of After Earth, I, as a critical moviegoer, asked myself if something might have gone wrong here. There might be a misunderstanding concerning this film.
People who think that a good movie has as many actors as possible but the CGI nevertheless has to play the principal role, will not get their money's worth. And those will be disappointed who believe in endless introductions, a high number of hardly understandable turns of the story, and importance-charged explaining monologues during the last 5 Minutes. Briefly: Expecting a standard Hollywood Sci Fi thriller is a mistake here.
After Earth, in fact, is a European style kammerspiel, located in a surrounding of fascinating beauty. That, alone, is interesting.
What makes this movie one of the best I've seen during the last 24 month is the fact that Will and Jaden Smith give it a soul. This is it, what makes the quite daring setting not only acceptable (father slowly wasting away immobilized in a wrecked starship, while his emotionally immature son stumbles through a strange world) but gives it a emotional tension, keeping the audience on the edge of their seats until the last minute – even if the resolution of the story is obvious.
On the one hand, After Earth has an ethereal, unreal atmosphere with fairytale-like turns of the story. On the other hand it pays respect to the audience, avoiding the so well-known reality deflections beyond plausibility. So, a very concentrated, highly fascinating cinema experience evolves. I, personally, felt reminded of Wim Wenders' "Until the End of the World", the early (and better) Lasse Halström movies or, even, of the more accessible of Andrei Tarkowskis works.
Finally: This movie looks good. Fantastic landscapes which are not edited to death and dramatic-poetic sceneries meet a future technology of which the design is able to surprise. As a feast for the eyes, alone, After Earth is worth seeing!
Those, who like to watch a "different" movie, which provides the old qualities of the cinema without being old-fashioned, those who have a feeling for poetry, those who believe in "soul" in a movie – they will like After Earth, they might love it.
