Get Hard (2015)
Really bad
This is one of Will Ferrell's worst. There are a couple of funny bits, but mostly just really terrible.
Olympus Has Fallen (2013)
Very dumb storyline
SPOILERS. The President is completely incompetent, giving up highly classified security codes. He knew that giving up the codes would result in nuclear devastation, but he did it because he didn't want to see people around him hurt. Then the Speaker (acting President) Morgan Freeman caves to the demands of the terrorists and withdraws troops from Korea knowing it will lead to war. All of this was not believable and dumb. All he needed to do was storm the White House with military troops and take it back. Pretty simple. Maybe the President would have died, but he was giving up security codes anyway. Instead, in order to advance this horrible plot, Freeman proclaims it is all up to Butler to save the world. So dumb. The Koreans took the White House inn13 minutes. The US military would have taken it back in 30 seconds, whether the President lived or died was irrelevant at that point. Movie over.
Brad's Status (2017)
Surprised at the positive reviews.
SPOILERS. This is a liberal wet-dream, and in that context was incredibly predictable. The movie tells the story of a middle-aged white guy having a mid-life crisis. He takes his kid on a visit to several colleges. He has a nice job running a non-profit, but his thoughts wander to his 4 college friends who are more wealthy and successful than him. During his predictable journey he learns that his friends all have problems worse than his. He bonds with his kid. In the end he concludes that his like is a-okay. Marvelous, right?
But let's think about how he arrives at the destination of his journey.
Act 1: Brad is filled with a sense of failure. He is envious of his friends. The director sets up the friends as wealthy and happy. Of course they are. One consults with the White House and wrote a bestseller. Another is a famous director. The third is a wealthy hedge fund manager. The last has sold his business and retired at 40 to Hawaii where he runs around with two young girls. How could we not feel envy, right? Brad is missing out and his life is a failure.
Act 2: Brad's son has an appointment to visit Harvard, but he got the date wrong. His appointment was yesterday. Oops! So Brad calls his friend who works in the White House because he also teaches at Harvard. Great! The friend gets Brad's kid and appointment with the Dean of Admissions and an interview with a music teacher. It goes great, but the son is not impressed. They aren't "cool" like he thought they would be. Brad is angry at his snot-nosed millennial kid who thinks he knows it all. Brad and his kid meer up with some friends of his kid who go to Harvard. Young hot musicians. Brad creeps on them. It is awkward. Brad sneaks out at night to meet one of the girls at a bar. It is weird. Brad tells he to stop being an idealist and just go make money. She loses respect for him and calls him "white privilege."
Act 3: Brad meets his friend (the White House) guy for dinner at a swanky restaurant to thank him for the interviews. Brad is feeling left out because he's lost touch with the guys. And here is where all predictions come true. The White House/author is a real jerk. He runs down all his friends. The guy in Hawaii is a drud addict and alcoholic. A real bad dude. The hedge fund manager is is a crook and under investigation. Of course he is! "You can't get that rich unless your a thief." The director is a flaming gay guy who uses his home for a "sci-fi gay porno" lifestyles. So this reveals that the White House guy is a real homophobe. Yep! Why wouldn't he be. Brad leaves the restaurant. "We aren't even friends anymore. I don't even know you." Brad rushes to his kid and the story conclude with Brad realizing that he has an amazing life. Ta-da!
This movie brings out all the liberal tropes. All his friend's wealth = bad. Hedge fund = bad. Bad guys make homophobic slurs, no jokes allowed. But Brad creeping on the young girls; not so bad, just part of the journey. Lots of white privilege nonsense. Idealism is better than money. Money = white privilege. And Brad has to learn this from the strong female minority women. "Stay golden, Pony-Boy!" Am I right? And Brad's son swears like a drunken sailor. He drops f-bombs at his dad like it's not a problem. He just so hip and cool and talented.
In the end, we really learn that Brad is a creep. Brad is filled with envy, pride, lustful thoughts, and doesn't recognize all the good in his life. He arrives at redemption because he realizes that all his idols, those with money and fame are all homophones, drunks, drug addicts, thief's and awful people. He learns about life from the young, incredibly intelligent, enlighten, talented, minority women who teache him about his white privilege. And he also learns from his cussing son. "What the f*** is wrong with you dad?"
So it all comes together in the end. Of all his friends, Brad is the one who had success. A success of the spirit.
The Legend of Tarzan (2016)
This version is terrible! Minor spoiler.
This movie is terrible and I wish I had never bought it. There is absolutely nothing redeeming about this version. The story is shallow and predictable. The dialogue is awful. Jane is as 2-dimensional as a character can be. The cinematography is fake. The movie was filed in a studio in England and they attempted to "back drop" Africa into it. But it looks awful; meaning the green screen work is so bad. I've seen better work in cable TV. The CG work is pathetic. The scene with the animals trampling the army village near the end looks like little computer generated rabbits. The proportions don't work. And then there is Samuel Jackson. What a terrible casting job. He's old (yeah, I get it, can't say that, but its true), yet he's supposed to be keeping up with Tarzan running through the jungle. It doesn't work. It's not realistic. It looks fake. He looks like he should be in a wheel chair. Combined that with some angles where he's running on air because the green screen doesn't match. What an absolute pathetic attempt. They claim it took 3 months to file. I think maybe 3 days. Save yourself the 2 hours and take a nap instead of watching this tripe. Blah!
The Goldbergs: Breakfast Club (2016)
This show may have jumped the shark - SPOILERS
I typically like this show, but Episode #4.1 was not good at all; it was a steamy pile of "not funny". I didn't laugh once. I don't understand how this episode has currently been rated a 7.8 (but of course that is currently only 45 users). I expect the rating to go down. This show is at its best when it includes the 80's as a quasi-character, but still makes the show relatable. This show is at its worst when it does nothing more than copy an 80s show and try to win ratings by nostalgia. That is the case with Episode #4.1. This episode didn't even try to be original, but copied the movie "The Breakfast Club" from start to finish, even including the Saturday morning detention dance, soundtrack, and crawling through air ducts. There was nothing original. This wasn't a playful homage to the original movie. This was a complete ripoff that added nothing new. Dwight Schrute once said, "People underestimate the power of nostalgia." He was wrong; as evidenced by the fact that his spin-off show "The Farm" didn't get a green light. If "The Goldbergs" intends to rely only on nostalgia, then this will be the last season, and if this is all the writers can come up with, then its time to send this series to the garbage dump.
Zoolander 2 (2016)
Don't believe the poor reviews, this movie is very funny!
The movie isn't perfect, but it is very funny. Don't believe the reviews with poor ratings. I give it a solid 8.
The reality is that we currently live in a world of political correctness. This movie is anti-PC. The reviews giving this movie poor ratings are done by people who are easily offended. They don't want to be offended. In fact, even if there is a funny joke, they refuse to laugh. They want to silence what they don't like.
This movie has jokes about fat kids, ugly people, and transgenders. Yes, that's right, jokes about transgenders. Can you imagine? Oh, the horrors!! So there is a backlash by the PC crowd that thinks certain jokes are off-limits. Nonsense! This movie is very funny.
There are also jokes about plastic surgery, beautiful people, models (yeah, a lot of those), ego-maniacs, and fashion designers. There are even jokes about pretentious people who love their orange mocha frappuccinos and foamy lattes.
Don't be influenced by these bad reviews. Go see this movie.
