Father Soldier Son (2020)
Brilliant, hard hitting film that lives long in the memory
This film is brilliant, not an easy watch. but just about as raw as a documentary can come... thoroughly recommended.
However I chose to write to reflect on the extreme entitlement of some so called 'reviewers' leaving comments on here and out in the world in general recently. It is becoming more and more common for people to give a film a low review because it does not conform to their political. or social views on life. These people totally misunderstand what reviewing a film is all about. But one of the user reviews of this film on this site contains the most entitled sentence I have ever read.
"The accident of Joey also never show to us! Pathetic!... Another disappointed film!"
Joey was the 12 year old son of the film's protagonist tragically killed in a traffic accident during the filming of this documentary, which was made over many years of the crew visiting the family... That this reviewer is castigating the film crew for not being out there waiting to catch the moment for his entertainment is utterly contemptable, I am sure even if they were there when the accident happen it is unlikely the family would have wanted to retain this fatal moment in the film... reviews like this show a pathological inability to separate entertainment form reality.
Sweat (2020)
An excellent and very modern film
Sweat shines on so many levels and is a breath of fresh air in so many ways.
The combination of intense close up facial camera work and hyper realistic acting give this movie a modern, uncomfortable, interrogational edge in keeping with the forensic scrutiny of anyone living in the modern media influencer bubble.
The excellent, nuanced lead performance of Magdalena Kolesnik as Sylwia has plenty of other great performances to bounce off of, particularly her mother, played by Aleksandra Kolieczna.
The intimate, unflinching, naturalistic directional style of Magnus Von Horn is showed off to maximum effect in the conversational scenes between Sylwia and an old school acquaintance in a shopping mall and later with a large family group around a dinner table. In both cases all performers seem totally natural and oblivious to the camera giving the film a wonderfully voyeuristic overtone... loved it.
Bad Boy Bubby (1993)
A truly brilliant work of genius
It is very rare to see the humanist viewpoint expressed as aggressively and as beautifully as in this film. It is very funny, totally amoral and very, very angry but by modern standards does not contain that much out and out violence. For once most of the vitriol is left to the very darkly humoured dialogue, such as Bubby's retaliation to angels parents that "God is a stupid c***". Let us make no mistake this is one of the most anti-religious films you will ever see and yet the strength of the message comes not from it's anger but from it's serenity and beauty. Particularly in the scene where Bubby cradles the severely handicapped Raechel in his arms and talks to her in a tender way about why he cannot be with her because he loves another woman. This is very powerful emotional stuff and the message we get that all humans are equal from this film is very, very powerful. As for those people that don't like it, the film is not made for you, it is made both for people with a developed and twisted sense of humour and to reassure those of us living as part of a mental and ideological minority that don't worry everything is OK ... especially without God.
