Aa! Megamisama! (1993)
Unforgettable love story
I found this 'Oh My Goddess!' VHS today while trying to find my 'Rat Race' VHS. I seriously thought I had recorded over it. Back then when I thought I recorded over it, I was very devastated.
I remembered that I absolutely loved this animation, but I thought I just loved it because I was in sixth grade and that I enjoyed just about anything. It's been almost a decade since I last saw it, so I thought I'd rewatch it.
The sound quality was horrible, but after a half an hour, it didn't bother me anymore. The story captured me, and so did the animation. I mean, here's a good saying: 'nice guys finish last.' Not only do they finish last, but they get the prize winning. It's such a feel-good anime, and I know that just about anybody would enjoy it. However; if you find goodie-two-shoe type of girls annoying, then this isn't the animation for you. Though, she may seem like a goodie-two-shoe, but everything is explained at the end. Like why she did what she did and so on... Very good animation.
OK yes, it's true, this is a cute-sy chick flick, and if you like love stories, then this is an anime for you.
Fushigi Yûgi (1995)
A story about a girl discovering love and life's priorities.
I first watched this in the I-channel and was immediately hooked. I kept missing episodes, so I begged my friend for a burnt copy. I absolutely loved it and later got the DVD set.
Summary: Miaka and best friend opens book. They get captured into the book and live their life in this new world. They later on get split apart and became enemies, and now Miaka has to find a way to get both her and her best friend out of the book, but new problem arises. Oh no, what will they do!?
Why I loved it was because I discovered this anime on my own without any recommendations, and without any criticism; it was all on my own finding and I enjoyed it on my own without any expectations. All of the characters had a story and they were all presented very well in the anime. I thought the plot was very well placed and it had a very good point, but we all have to catch the meaning ourselves instead of thinking it's just another anime about love.
As much as I adore this anime, there were a few things about it that annoyed me, and that was because it was too lovie-dovie. Tamahome and Miaka keep having that weird problem where they decide not be together again, and then get back together moments after. That part was repetitive, but I could tell it was still essential to the anime.
A reason why I really liked this anime was that, this isn't just about love. IT ISN'T! It's about Miaka. It's about how she has matured into this beautiful blossom that's wiser, and more responsible. Through her experience with her best friend and her new friends--it became an adventure. Some of my friends said she's too young, but that isn't true. I first fell in love at the age of fifteen also, so it's reality/fantasy. I can tell why most wouldn't like it, but I loved it. I thought it was funny and romantic. It gives you this hope that love does conquer all whether it's true or not.
I still cry watching FY. Every time that I watch it, I find more reasons to love it more, and then other reasons that gets me annoyed. Anyway, if this anime isn't your thing, then I recommend FY's OAV. It's shorter, and it might explain a lot more in a short amount of time. But anyway, I do highly recommend it. At least watch it once and watch it all the way through. If mushy love stories aren't your thing, then you will be disappointed.
note: Please do not get the sequel for this. You will want to hang yourself... Well, if you like FY, then maybe you'll like the parodies in between the sequel's episodes.
Rurouni Kenshin: Meiji Kenkaku Romantan: Tsuioku Hen (1999)
One of the best animes I've ever seen.
I used to tune in Kenshin the TV series on Cartoon Network. I hated it. I hated everything about it because it was so cheesy. I just didn't like it, but I was curious about the storyline. I checked a few anime trailers and I discovered Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal. At first I thought: 'Wow, is that Kenshin? He looks different. Wait, this looks a whole lot more serious than the TV series. I must watch this!' So I borrowed it from my friend and noticed how very well done it was. VERY well done. It gave nobody mercy regardless if they're bad or good. This isn't the type where everybody dies either, but the storyline is also twisted but it fits in at the end. It gets you thinking one thing, but the real story is about something else. I love it. I love it because it's a story about love. That's all it is! A really well done love story. In all, i think I've watched it more than six times and I still cry watching it. Don't get me wrong guys, this isn't a chick flick. It's action/romance/etc etc.. it can fall into a lot of genres. But in all, it's a great anime about love and life.
Even though I gave it a straight out 10, but I have to complain about one thing: characters... Most characters you didn't get a chance to know which you wish you did. But maybe they went into that during the last of it that continues after this. Who knows, anyway, good anime. Definitely recommended to people who aren't very fond of anime.
La mala educación (2004)
Wow...
I saw this with a friend of mine. It was my first indie film that I got to see in theatres. I didn't know the story or anything. I didn't know what to expect. I just saw the previews, but that didn't really explain anything.
So once I finally got to watch it with my friend, I thought everything went well. The characters were interesting, but as the story progressed, the more confused I got. Then when it hit to the point where everything came apparent, the story left me in awe. I left the theatre grateful that I got to watch something like this. Great movie and I highly recommend it.
I give it a 10.
Ekkusu (1996)
It's not good to squeeze a story
When I first watched it, I thought it was one of the best movies I've ever seen. I mean, the story is great. I absolutely love the storyline. I still think so today. But as for the movie, that's another story.
I've read the mangas. I'm not exactly a big fan of CLAMP's work, but this one is the first that I got into with the mangas. I fell in love with one of the characters in the story name Subaru Sumeragi. Favorite character for obvious reason, but if you like any character other than Kamui or Fuuma, then you're in for the biggest disappointment if you watch this movie. OK, to get to the point, this is basically stuffing all the series of the manga into one movie. You won't have time to get to know the characters if you didn't know them already. You just won't get to. Well, they at least explain a bit of their purpose in life for a few seconds. Also, they failed to explain a lot of things about the movie, so that's another big disappointment. Er, and another big disappointment is that, they change some of the character's personality! ANOTHER big disappointment is that they didn't put some of the good story lines in the mangas into the movie. I know that doesn't seem like a big deal and I would like to give an example. There's this one character who loves another character from the other angel (they're enemies angels), but in the movie, they hate each other. So that's what I mean.
But wait, there's a good! The good is that the animation is great. Beautiful and artistic like all of CLAMP's work. It's realistic in animation, and the way it was done was just, wow. even though they lack everything else, but it was still nicely done in animation wise. Now if only the series was done the same way. Oh yeah, the music is great also.
Even though I like the story and how it was animated, I just didn't want to sit through it anymore. Once was enough. So I gave it a 4/10
Hotaru no haka (1988)
Her voice still lingers...
Grave Of The Fireflies was something different from the usual animes I've watched. In all, I've watched it more than six times, and I still cry watching it. It was also the first anime I bought on DVD just so I can introduce it to my mom. She didn't like it though. The English dub wasn't my taste though. The original in Japanese and with English sub was more believing.
After every time I watched it, I discover something new that I missed the first time. It's a great movie about the aftermath of war and a brother and sister trying to survive. After watching it a few times, I noticed that it didn't end bad at all. Either people hate it because there was nothing happy about it, or they love it because of how well it was done and the story. I love Grave Of The Fireflies. The DVD was worth the buy and so was the poster.
Some say that it would be better if it wasn't in animation, and that maybe more people would be introduced to it. I agree on the second. I'd like to see some acting done with this. Just to get the flavor of both. However, I do hope they don't butcher it.
In any case, I gave it a 10/10.
The Last Unicorn (1982)
Great for a child's imagination
I remembered watching this movie when I was little. I remembered watching it more than ten times. Maybe even more. It was my favorite. I liked it better than Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty and all those other children animation that I had at home. Everything about it, I enjoyed. I couldn't find anything wrong with it.
Every fantasy about the animation caught my attention. like the talking tree and so on. I liked how each of the characters had their own personality. They did a really good job on the characters. They all seemed a bit moody, but that was okay. In my opinion, it doesn't seem like the typical children story, but I'm sure everybody enjoyed it anyway.
Now I'm getting the book and the movie on DVD. I do hope it's available on DVD. In any case, I know it's worth it. The rating for the book is close to perfect.
I give it a 10/10. Definitely a keeper.
