End of the Spear (2005)
People aren't this stupid
Yes, you need to suspend disbelief to think anyone could be as dumb as these people. The Christian missionaries are in possession of a native speaking member of an isolated Ecuadoran tribe (known for killing pretty much everyone), but they don't think to bring her along while trying to make contact with the natives. Predictably, their complete inability to communicate leads to a horrible violent death, but somehow the natives begin to find a religious light... and then we quickly agreed to pull the plug on this transparent Christian propaganda fantasy. Ugh, this is what we get for not doing our homework.
The Sound of the Spirit (2012)
Excellent message at a great value!
It may have been low budget, but "The Sound of the Spirit" provides enough food for thought to feed a nation. Rivka's plight will choke up any parent, and much of the movie is spent hoping her strong faith can help her navigate the sea of opposing forces, manipulative people and personal tragedy. In the end, her faith and foundation rise above these difficult barriers, and she teaches a lesson of inclusiveness to all. Particularly surprising to me is how the "happy ending" included Rivka's Bat Mitzvah at a traditional Jewish temple instead of the Messianic temple where her faith was born. Perhaps it's an olive branch from Messianic Writer/Director Michael Wolf to mainstream Judaism, or more likely, a statement that faith and message are more important than venue.
Bravo!
The Brave Little Toaster (1987)
How embarrassing, I love this movie
Well I'm glad this review allows for some level of anonymity, because what comes next could get me cast in one of those unmanly beer commercials. As the Dad of two, I've probably been forced to watch ~100 animated films. The BLT is without question in my top 5
and the same goes for my kids, who wanted to watch it over and over again. Yes, the title and premise are silly enough, but what's really wimpy is how emotionally attached you become with the characters. In the classic mold of "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Incredible Journey", this band of vulnerable underdogs is determined to reach their destination, and have to overcome all kinds of obstacles. I think it's an especially great move for little ones, with just the right amount of drama and suspense
though some parts might be a little scary for the overly sensitive. The music is really catchy also, and unfortunately, have found myself singing it in business meetings, lunches and while hanging out with friends in the man cave; NOT GOOD!
Meek's Cutoff (2010)
Bewildered
We'd heard good reviews, and went to go see at the local independent film theater. Gosh, it would be great to pass along some interesting or insightful comments; maybe a few deep thoughts ... but quite simply, it was shockingly void of any meaningful content. I honestly can't recall a film where less happens. Apparently, there is a segment of the population that enjoys silent plodding through the desert, but we don't occupy that demographic.
We waited, waited, waited... and just when it finally seemed something significant was about to unfold, the credits rolled. Darn!
Unfortunately, the most memorable thing about this film was the one actress' bizarre "chipmunk like" voice. Though water was scarce, it seems there was no shortage of helium.
Very strange.
