Dredd (2012)
very good, not quite great.
if you love an explosive action film, with scenes of intense gore and combat then this a great film choice for you. I really liked this idea of judges and how they had been transferred from comic to big screen i think was fairly well done. i liked the linear narrative like a comic strip it was very easy to follow. Karl Urbans performance as Dredd i thought was fantastic he had his face concealed through the whole film and could portray no personality or humor but he smashed the cold, calculated killer role in a rather ego-less performance. Negatively though it felt like there was no sort of resolution at the end of the film which i do not enjoy. Also the ultra slo-mo was overused to death i think, i know the slo-mo drug gave them the opportunity to do this but it was really done to death and started to get frustrating. Also it did seem that the majority of the people living in the slums were from ethnic minorities, and I'm unsure if this is some sort of subliminal message, but i didn't like it. Overall though a good and enjoyable film would recommend to action fans and I'm looking forward to possible sequels.
Man of Steel (2013)
One of the best superhero saga's around.
i really enjoyed this one. There were massive expectations on the film as there always will be with superman and i think they have really pulled it out of the bag. first of all the producer and director coupling of Nolan and Snyder was one that was made in heaven wasn't it? Nolan having the epic story telling and super hero experience from the bat man trilogy and Synder having the special effect and fight scene knowledge from 300 and further super hero experience from watchmen it was never going to fail. Although i was slightly surprised by what i would call a rather chaotic narrative which seemed to jump back and forth and if you were not concentrating it would lose you. Henry Cavill made superman everything i wanted it to be. And there were also praiseworthy performances from Amy Adams and as always the magnificent Russel Crowe.
After Earth (2013)
good, enjoyable, but lacking something
I did enjoy the film very much, i thought it was action filled and the idea for the film was a very good one. It kept me entertained for the full time and left an enigma as it was quite difficult to predict how it was going to end. Although the plot seems somewhat thin and it just seems to be missing that something special; although i enjoyed will smiths performance as the cold disciplined father figure. I thought Jaiden smith did well in the circumstances as he was almost the only active character throughout the film. I also feel that the film did not have enough background and more background knowledge would've enhanced the experience. Also the film ended before they got back to there home, i dislike it when this happens and these sort of endings are never fulfilling. Also i believe that it was fairly graphic for a 12A and would not recommend to younger viewers.
