Ragnarok (2020)
Doing Nordic Myth On the Cheap Just Doesn't Work!
The synopsis for this rather sad Nordic outing sounded very promising. Norse god reincarnated, battle of the titans and so on. However to pull something like this off in a modern setting you absolutely need four key elements. A superb director, fantastic actors, engaging screenplay and a very big special effects budget. None of which are present here.
I am sure some of the actors are fine given the right material. The main actor here though always looks like he has wandered onto the wrong set and doesn't quite understand what is going on. His brother, who goes to the same school looks old enough to be a teacher and the mother?....I am not even sure why she is there.
The only interesting character is killed off right near the beginning. You can clearly see she didn't die in any way closely resembling the police report yet they ignore all the evidence and carry on regardless. Are Norwegian police really that useless?
The villains of the piece could not be more ridiculous. They play the bad guy part in a familiar cliched way but the myth part? Laughable.
The series plods on through 6 episodes and gets more ridiculous as we go along. The special effects.....what special effects? You have to use your imagination. Think of a student stage play and you will get the idea.
You keep waiting for something interesting to happen...but it doesn't. Our hero is plainly an idiot and that stays the same throughout.
All these 10/10 reviews I can only assume are posted by cast, crew, production company, and the friends and family of cast, crew and production company. Either that or some people have set their bar for quality entertainment well and truly low.
White Settlers (2014)
If ever there were a case of money laundering this must be it
If you need to launder a lot of cash in a hurry one of the best ways to do it is to make a movie and that is the only sensible reason I can think of for this particular farce to have been brought to our screens. As soon as it starts you will know you have seen the same film with different characters hundreds of times before. There is no plot here that a 5 year old could not figure out in just a few minutes. It's a complete bore fest from start to finish....oh wait...there is no finish. The writers obviously figured why waste time on it. Best thing you can do is watch the first five minutes then scroll to the end. You will have missed absolutely nothing and saved yourself an hour and twenty minutes.
I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House (2016)
This movie is the reason I cancelled my Netflix subscription!
I can't say too much about this movie as I don't want to waste any more time on it than I already have but, forget the glowing reviews you see for it on IMDB because they are either placed there by the production team or by people who have far too much time on their hands.
To say this movie is slow would be a gross understatement. It's almost coma inducing. The actors are fine and they do what they can with what is given to them but therein lies the problem. The story such as it is could have been condensed into around 10 minutes and nothing would have been lost. It is not even an interesting story and the premise has been used many times over in the past.
I would strongly suggest you watch the first 10 minutes and then look for something else because it really doesn't get any better after that. If your waiting for something to happen you will need to give it 1hr and 29min until the end titles roll...THAT is the most exciting part of this movie.
The Open House (2018)
If I could get a refund I would!
I didn't expect much and that is exactly what I got. This is one of those movies that should never have been made. I can only assume the producers were looking to launder some dollars because there is absolutely NO reason at all to let this excuse for a movie anywhere near the paying public.
No where in the movie do any of the main characters do anything any sensible person would do. They don't question things that are obviously questionable and they do things you simply would never do under the circumstances.
There are characters that appear for no reason at all and we have a killer with no apparent motive and who's face for some reason or another the camera can't bring into focus.
I can't say more without spoilers...actually there is not much to spoil but think of the worst movie you ever saw then imagine one worse and you have a very good idea of what 'The Open House' is going to be like.
Netflix should be thoroughly ashamed of screening this garbage.
