This Changes Everything (2018)
Yes it's a male director but...
This documentary was really eye-opening and well done. While agree that it would've been great to have a female director, isn't it ALSO powerful that a male is seeking opportunity to give space for female voices? We need both women AND men to speak up and fight for equality. I also really appreciate the call to action at the end. I immediately started looking up female-directed movies that I can see in theaters and support by sharing with others. I'm just disappointed Netflix didn't pop this up on my watchlist much sooner...yet another barrier to tear down- algorithms that fail to suggest female-based content to viewers.
Surprise Me! (2017)
Literally the Worst
I've seen a lot of bad movies in my time, but this one has got to be one of the worst. Doesn't develop characters or relationships, plot is disjointed and painfully awkward. I can't recommend this movie to anyone.
The Darkest Minds (2018)
Great Teen Post-Apocalyptic Action/Drama
I haven't read the books, but maybe that's why I really liked this movie. I thought Amandla Stenberg and Harris Dickinson acted phenomenally and the story was engaging and fun. It did feel a little rushed at times, but almost every book adaptation I've ever watched felt that way. I'm hooked thought and excited to see the franchise continue. I might even read the books!
King Arthur: Legend of the Sword (2017)
Ritchie Re-invents Arthur
While I love Ritchie, I went into this movie a little cautiously. I was completely floored with the end result. I honestly don't understand all the bad critical reviews. The fast-paced dialogue, action, and vignettes to move the story along were excellent. Although I never watched Charlie Hunnam before, I'm a fan now. Jude Law makes a fantastic villain that you almost feel sorry for, except he's so evil. This version of King Arthur that I actually want to know more about (unlike many of it's predecessor's). If you like action, smart dialogue, a hero's journey, and a great musical score, you'll like this movie.
Ben-Hur (2016)
The Critics are Haters
So I rarely bother to write a review on here, but I feel that this movie has been so poorly represented by critical review that I had to bite the bullet. I'll be honest, I've never seen the original and quite frankly, I don't think I would've had the attention span to ever actually sit down and watch it (although after seeing this movie I have more interest now than I ever did). I get so tired of people bagging on remakes because it's "not as good as the old one" or supposedly "unnecessary." A remake is meant to address an entirely NEW audience...not the same one an original was made for. If you are one who's in love with the original, why would you bother to see a new one that you are already determined to hate? I don't get it. I have little faith in critics opinions when so much of what is "critically acclaimed" these days is either crass or over- sexualized. As for me personally, I thought the action, acting, and story were excellent. The themes were refreshing, powerful and thought- provoking. I enjoyed every second and plan on buying it.
