Gopala Gopala (2015)
Much needed remake for Telugu people unfortunately goes wrong!
We have had a decent history of remaking movies. Our Shankar Dada MBBS and Gabbar Singh out did their originals by many folds. However here is another one that could have been much better. In short, Gopala Gopala is written and directed by somebody who either did not quite understand the essence of "Oh My God!" or could not make what he intended to.
The movie starts with an atheist Gopal Rao (Venkatesh) struggling with the devotion of his friends and family towards god and that does not make any sense to him. He prefers feeding the poor, helping those in trouble over offering things to god. Well, this is conveyed by a couple of seriously unconvincing shots. As the story moves on, Gopala suffers a huge personal loss in terms of an earthquake which damages his livelihood. Insurance companies denies his claims citing the term "Act of God". The rest of the film goes around how Gopala files cases against god his committee managers (Godmen) to get his money.
When I watched Oh My God! and PK movies, I felt there is a necessity to remake any of these films and show to people who cannot understand Hindi. But alas, not this way! The enthusiasm that has built up once the poor fellow files a case on god goes gradually down with every court hearing. It takes a Pawan Kalyan to keep you awake through the boring and illogical logics. Most actors except Venkatesh and Pawan Kalyan seem to have over done it. Mithun Chakraborty's role did wonders in the original but its poorly dealt with here. Another huge let down for the movie is Pawan Kalyan's role as god Krishna who guides Gopala through tough times. Well, you know that because of that dialogue where Venkatesh says "It's you who guided me through all this". Otherwise you never know what Pawan Kalyan is doing in this film. His role was more like a brand ambassador to the film than actor.
Overall, I wish this movie is only better. You may watch it because you don't want to miss a Pawan Kalyan film simply because it is not good!
Legend (2014)
just creating two stunning characters does not make a film winner!
I like to watch Boyapati's films for the intensity of violence he creates. I had goosebumps watching the epic fight sequences in his previous films like 'Tulasi' and 'Simha'. However I should say, he compromised a bit in terms of violence this time in 'Legend'. Or may be I expected more brutal second half of the film!
One thing Boyapati knows well is that a Telugu film can not do well with a single agenda like violence. There have to be multiple flavors like sentiment, comedy and romance and that's why he was successful with his previous endeavors. However this time, he did not quite get any of them right. Only heroism of Balakrishna and sadism (may be villainsm) of Jagapati Babu works to the expectations. Comedy by the legendary Brahmanandam could only make mouths wide but not open. Audience felt a bit awkward to see Balakrishna romancing a girl way younger than him (I here do not refer to his acting capabilities but to the fact that he is aging). Sentiment involves you in the theater but if you go home and think back, you find it illogical.
Besides the stunning performance of Balakrishna, its Jagapati Babu who adds wind to the fire thereby making the second half like a raging fire.
On the flip side, what this film lacking is the depth in every aspect like sentiment, violence, logic, characterization and what not. Audience will enjoy watching a huge mob running in fear when Balakrishna chases them with an axe (or some traditional man-hunting weapon). But when some one thinks deep, why would hundreds of ruthless rowdies run out of fear when they see a man with a weapon provided they do not yet know the power and history of this legend? Likewise in every aspect the film goes shallow.
Devi Sri Prasad did a real good job in terms of background score. The audio songs however, fail to impress. I don't know if it is a coincidence , but the last time when I heard a good audio in Balakrishna's movie was only in 2001 (Narasimha Naidu).
Conclusion: Sparing the well-written and intense characters of hero and villain, this film falters through out. Even though you give up searching for the logics as you always do while watching a Telugu movie, this one fails to entertain.
PS: What happened to the younger Balakrishna fellow? I seriously doubt if there was a need for a duel role. Or may be they worried about the screen presence time of Balakrishna that would drastically reduce if he does a single.
Yevadu (2014)
Thou shalt not worry about logics!!
As soon as we came out of Yevadu, my friends started shooting questions-
1. How the hell a 'complex' surgery can change height and weight of the person? Oh wait... this seems to be the first successful vocal chord transformation on planet earth!!
2. How can nobody cares if a flat owned by a dead person is possessed by a random fellow?
3. Why everybody get off their vehicles and run on the roads in chase scenes?
4. What is the necessity to create a unconvincing "Director-Actress" drama with Brahmanandam and Amy Jackson instead of simply explaining her the plan? At the first place, why Brahmanandam??
5. Why bad guys do not have guns every time hero wants to fight with them??
All I could say is that basic commandment you should follow while watching a routine Telugu paisa vasool masala : "Thou shalt not worry about logics!!"
1 - Nenokkadine (2014)
When was the last time you felt proud of a Telugu movie??
Finally a film has come from Tollywood that is worth watching!! Who had guessed that a star like Mahesh would dare to keep aside the regular RomCom genre? But, he did. Who had guessed a director who is known for his romantic films could take on such a crazy script? But, Sukumar did.
You do not see a genre change in Telugu movies very often. But when it is done, it was hardly well-handled. For instance an adventure movie was made the last year and god, it was so terrible. However here, Sukumar did it and did to perfection.
The film is an intelligent psychological thriller which mainly relies on its' brilliant screenplay. I don't reveal much of the script as it a huge chunk of spoilers. Every now and then you find a twist that leaves you awestruck. A key idea of the plot was inspired from a Hollywood flick 'Unknown' (2011). However, the full length script is framed originally and intelligently giving room for Indian "sentiments".
Sparing the unrealistic and sometimes irritating stunts; and songs that disturb the narration, this movie is a treat to watch for those who are craving to watch a world standard Telugu movie.
Way to go Sukumar and Mahesh we welcome you proudly
Gravity (2013)
IMAX theaters were built only to watch this film !!!!!!!!
I have read some reviews before going to movie out of excitement. I was impressed by one line that I read which goes something like "Imagine to the maximum extent you can, still you can't beat Alfonso Cuaron's vision". I must admit it, that line was not written just like that. Your brain really can't beat those stunning visuals. Luckily, I watched in IMAX-3D. Oh that was one hell of an experience. I will remember this day for the rest of my life.
But I have a complaint about this movie. You just can't call a film as masterpiece just because of stunning visuals, brilliant sound and some great acting. What matters more is the script and this is where Gravity loses a point from my side. Could have been more gripping and emotionally powerful. All that I wanna say is that I entered the theater expecting goosebumps and I didn't feel any!!
Attarintiki Daredi (2013)
Flaw-full yet hilarious!!
Its been so long time since this kind of entertainment which keeps the audience whooping in joy has come in Telugu Film Industry! Almost every actor in the film has done some astonishing work while the show-stealer being the Power Star Pawan Kalyan himself. If you are watching it for witty one-liners from Trivikram or acting finesse of Pawan Kalyan, go on..you are in for a treat!! Positives: 1. Terrific acting and comedy timing of Pawan Kalyan, Brahmanandam and MS Narayana 2. Trivikram Punches (Not so many, but you will acknowledge every single one of them rolled out of his pen) 3. Devi Sri Prasad's BGM 4. Emotionally elevating and terrifically acted climax which clears up all the mess created before. Negatives: 1. Theme of the film is not original or new. The core idea matches partly with SS Rajamouli's Simhadri(2003). However, Trivikram dealt with the subject in a completely new fashion 2. Predictable plot 3. Poorly picturized songs that test your patience (Except "Ninnu chudagane.." which is a near-visual-treat) 4. Pale sequences in the middle-third run time(Ending of first half and starting of second half)
Verdict: Go for it once! You will be entertained for sure :)
Ramayya Vastavayya (2013)
people watch Telugu films only for entertainment..and when you miss that... :-|
I don't know how many people will agree but Jr.NTR can act, dance and fight better than many superstars in any language through out India. So what!! With respect to decision making about the acceptance of movies...he is one of the most terrible. Many times he pick absolute pieces of crap, Baadshah, Dammu, Shakti and Kantri for instance. And this one "Ramayya Vastavayya" is no way different!! May be NTR has got more than 10 lessons that he has to look a 'script' instead of director while committing for it.
Talking about the movie..nothing new, nothing good, nothing entertaining. Only NTR could be the rescue factor. The interval twist made me give one more point out of 10 which otherwise would have been a 2/10. I wonder how this movie has got a 6.7 on IMDb. May be people voted as for Prabhu Deva's "Ramaiya Vastavaiya", the Hindi film. A dumb review posted below says this!!
I heard people saying 1st half is good!!! When I actually saw the movie, I was like What!!??. And second half is extremely predictable. The biggest spoiler of the movie is everybody knew Shruthi Haasan has got a role in the movie. If director had kept her role undercover during the making, it could keep an element of enthusiasm for the viewers.
A blahhh from my side for Thaman's music which is as usual!! However, "Neneppudaina kala gannana" song is good :) Editing is smooth and Cinematography is fine!
A doubt that is hunting me till I came out of the theater is..Why the hell had Dil Raju accepted such a terrible script??
Besharam (2013)
3.6 ??!!! Highly Over-Rated :-/
oh well....i some how watched it....the pain of watching some movies in theaters is that you cant easily get out of that hell before it is finished.
To talk about the movie...there is nothing...no story..some terrible comedy (not sure if can call it a comedy)....irritating performances....
Don't watch it..im not advising...im warning.....thank all those peers who told you not to watch it..
Im done...patchy review for a infy-terrible movie...thnx :)
Oh you r wondering why did I give 2 instead of 1?? 1 for the producers' sake..and another 1...oh i don't know... :-|
The Artist (2011)
where is the second half ???
Did I watch the full movie or they just cut it in halfway or they'r gonna make a second part of it??
First 40 minutes of the movie are brilliantly crafted...i thought i was in for a treat..
All in the next 50 minutes or so....awful...they wanted to show that he has gone through a bad phase...and you know what? they went into a bad phase...
The most terrible part is...how the movie ends so abruptly.....he didn't make his own movie...he dint come back...his ego was dead... I would have given this movie a 10/10 if this is a biography...
Im sorry but 5/10 is my rating...iv given enough for what you guys have shown to me :-/
The Good Road (2013)
The Undulated Road!!
I have decided to watch this film first rather than "The Lunch Box" out of excitement. The essence of the film is interesting and appealing - "A tale that tracks down the life styles and emotions of three people (and their peers/kin) with different backgrounds making their way on a High- way". But remember, Oscars are never given to summaries or ideas behind the films. They acknowledge the film itself, the art involved and the the science made use of. I don't find a pinch of the former one in those 92 minutes or so.
Coming to the plot, It narrates the events that happened in a single day of the lives of an educated family from the city who are on a holiday trip, a truck driver who is fighting with destiny to feed his family, and a poor little girl from the city who is on a ride towards her grandmother living in a far city on the high-way.
While continuing the journey on the highway towards their relatives, the child of literate couple from the city goes missing, which they fail to notice for a long time. The rest of the plot narrates their quest of the lost child. And wait! This is nowhere close to the word 'interesting'. All the elements like script, direction, and action are near-terrible. You will never actually feel that "a child is missing". And I can not imagine how a 7-year old fellow who went missing on a deserted highway does not panic and enjoys his adventure kind of struggle. However, the child is certainly a strength to the film as he pulls of some good eye- catching performance.
The second story that runs along is of a truck driver who is on a ride with illegal stock which he has to deliver and then disappear with the money received. He along with his assistant encounter the missing kid of the city couple and try to find his parents. This is the part where the writer did a fair job. Dialogues and emotions were well scripted. However, the poor performances drag the script down.
The third story is about a poor girl who ends up finding a brothel to ask in her ride towards her grandmother's place over the highway. She realizes the truth only when she has been 'picked' while "performing on the stage". Test rest is about how the girls gets on to the right path out of the brothel.
Positives: 1. Both the child artists 2. Cinematography that captures the beauty of "Rann-of-Kutch"
Negatives: 1. Poor script 2. Some terrible acting
Bottom line: Not a "Good Road" to the Oscars!!
