Miseuteo Shunshain (2018)
Got lost in it completely !!
This limited series felt like I was reading a novel. A well crafted novel which didn't skimp on any aspect nor did it rush through any aspect and made it messy. It was just perfect.
I have watched my fair share of Korean series but this was something else. The asthetics, the storytelling, the casting and a special mention to the music, I got immersed in every bit of it.
The story moved layer by layer slowly showing us Joseon getting into grips of foreign powers and ultimately being toppled by the Japanese. You could feel every bit of despair the characters felt. You could understand each and every character's motivation behind their actions. And by the end of the series you would be rooting for the protagonists from the depth of your heart that maybe they could pull off the impossible. And that's what felt like a gut punch in the end (not in a bad way). It kept things realistic. It didn't tweak the story just to please the viewers and every death felt meaningful and justified. The sadness I felt with each character's death, I don't think I will ever feel such emotions at a fictional characters' death.
Now to the casting. Each of the leads played their character to perfection. Special mention to Lee Buying Hun and Yoo Yeon Seok- I just got my best fictional characters of all time in them. Kim Tae-ri carried herself well and gave her career best performance. That last cry of Choi Yu-jin was just heart wrenching and is still ringing in my ears.
To sum it up I don't think I will watch any drama which will reach the level of Mr. Sunshine (I hope I'm wrong). The close second that I can think of is Crash Landing on You. This is my fourth viewing of Mr. Sunshine and it still brings out emotions like I am watching it for the first time. Finally I decided I should write a heartfelt review which this story rightly deserves.
Highly recommended to everyone !
Hawkeye: So This Is Christmas? (2021)
They did Daredevil dirty !!
First of all, let me say I have nothing against Hawkeye. Infact I was rooting for it to become darker in subsequent seasons after the introduction of Wilson Fisk.
Let's talk about Wilson Fisk aka The Kingpin for a minute. I have never seen an antagonist being such layered, menacing and ruthless as Fisk. Daredevil S01 and S03 is some of the best TV I have ever seen and along with Daredevil the credit also goes to Kingpin. The character was written and developed in such a way that given at any time he could have become a major antagonist in a Marvel movie. But what I saw in the Hawkeye was complete opposite of it.
I know some might be saying he might not be dead and may be revived later but this felt like they were dumping the character in an odd way. But the actual reason of concern was that this was not story driven but seemed like agenda driven. It was a blow below the belt. I am all up for feminism but this was desecrating something that the fans have cherished for a long time.
Sure, if Natasha Romanoff or hell if even Maria Hill took a shot at the Kingpin and won, I could hav got behind that idea. We have seen them grow and face hardships and know what their might is. So it's believable that they would be strenous and professional about it. But Kate and Echo defeating Kingpin alone and even Kingpin being shown with the lack of aura or the preparedness the character had in the previous shows is just plain disheartening. It even undermines Daredevil who Marvel want to streamline into the MCU. It just rips apart all the character building Daredevil had while he face Kingpin again and again and overcame him. And it's just a slap in the face for the audience.
I just want to say to the creators of Hawkeye that they missed a golden opportunity of growing the character of Wilson Fisk and turning the show into a worthy series.
The episode deserves a 7.5/10 but given the blunder that it just did I personally rate it 5.5/10.
The Witcher: Family (2021)
Topped Season 1 !!!
Far simpler timeline with special focus on Ciri. The stakes are at an all time high. The amount of chaos caused and the rift between Mages, Nilfgardians and the trio of Geralt, Siri and Yennefer has set the table for an action packed and explosive S03. Just hope the wait isn't as much for the next season.
Cons- Would have liked a bit more screentime between Yennefer and Geralt but I think we will have plenty of that in S03.
P. S. Just gonna see how much power can Siri actually generate when she is properly honed. The Witcher is making enemies left and right no matter where he goes and I am just loving it. Bring it on. The whole world versus The Witcher !!!
#WildHuntIsComing
Verdict- 9.6/10.
Edit: Upon second viewing I have got to say that now that the hype is gone. The finale seemed a bit empty. The stakes in the first season finale were huge and somewhat this felt bland. And the big bad for the season never seemed a major threat. Could have been a lot better.
Edited Verdict- 8 (Finale) & 8.7 (Season 2)
Lucifer: Daniel Espinoza: Naked and Afraid (2021)
Absolutely Bollocks !!!!!
This might be the weirdest, stupidest, out of the world hilarious episode ever shown on the show of Lucifer and it has worked wonders. Enjoyed every second of it.
Lucifer: Spoiler Alert (2020)
Lucifer is back !!!
So after a long wait season 5 is finally here.
Before I start, I read in a previous review that the start of the season was a bit slow. Well in my opinion bringing Michael in the first episode and exposing him by the second episode itself wasn't slow at all.
Now talking about Deckerstar, after very long 4 seasons they finally did the deed and it was epic. Wish there was some more of it. My only complaint in this department is that after everything they have gone through together, why Chloe still has doubts about Lucifer's intentions. Other than that this first part was mostly in right direction for their relationship.
Now coming to the celestials, I have mixed feelings about Michael. I had hoped he would be more brawls than brains and given that his endgame is still unclear I don't know how to feel about his mental manipulation of everyone around Lucifer. But if he really did have a hand in getting Charlie sick, I already hate his guts. There is no redemption for him.
Lucifer is as always a mumbo jumbo in emotional department but mostly he has been pretty advanced than other seasons. The driven, determined and focused investigation of the Whisperer case showed a new side of him. This shows how much Chloe actually means to him and what would happen to him without her.
Maze wants to have a soul. What does soul mean ? According to the series the celestials don't feel what humans feel. On the contrary Lucifer feels love & Amenadiel feels the responsibility of being a parent, so Maze wants to have a soul of herself too. But Maze already feels abandonment of her mother and Lucifer, friendship towards Linda, Ella and Chloe, responsibility towards Trixie. Isn't that possible only if she had a soul ? But without retrospection she once again falls for the antagonist's words without any serious thought.
Now lastly God !!!! It was in news before that God would make an entrance in this season and he did. But given just 8 episodes to go and the way he gave the dialogue," Children, you know I don't like when my children fight", it seems like there is going to be some conflict between the children and God and he would have to pick a side. And we all know he will be #TeamLucifer in the end. ;)
Seems like next half of the season would be a giant roller coaster of more manipulations and betrayals. Given that there is another season coming up, I don't think there will be much dwelving into the issues between Lucifer and God. Let's wait and watch.
My ratings-
S05E08- 9.8
S05 Part 1- 9
La casa de papel: La deriva (2019)
Twist in the tale !!!
The third season of La Casa De Papel starts off with a bang bringing every member into action as smoothly as one would have liked. Next four episodes set up the story for what is expected to be another roller coaster ride. The series ups the ante in the last two episodes and boy was that awesome.
Now coming to the finale, it matches the level of tension that was sensed during the cliffhanger of season 1. The last fifteen minutes changed the game into a war. For the very first time The Professor seems clueless and out of sorts. The good guys have turned bad and it will be really interesting to see how the gang comes out of this predicament. As the Professor said, the chances of surviving is less that 50%.
Really sad about Nairobi. The class of the series is that there was no scene in the complete season that foreshadowed this event. I thought the female detective would turn her against the team but damn. We have to wait and see how Racquel handles the problem she is in on her own.
Finally, a worthy sequel to a brilliant story.
S03 rating- 8.9/10
S03E08 rating- 10/10
Arrow: Lian Yu (2017)
A Masterpiece !!!
Never in the history of this show has been anything like this episode.Everything from the very starting second to the last second was perfect and ending with a huge cliffhanger which may very well determine the future of this show.
Let's start with Deathstroke. When Ollie approached Slade for his help I was very skeptical as to what his end game might be and the producers didn't shy away from giving us one or two moments where it was truly tested.
The enigma that is Prometheus ended up being the most sadistic villain in this 10 year circle of Arrow. He proved till the very end that Oliver could not out-think him even though he might not persuade Oliver to kill him. Every move that Prometheus made over the season was leading up to this moment, the moment where Oliver would have to choose between his friends and his son. Dare I say he even made Deathstroke look very puny in front of him.
Finally about Oliver, Stephen Amell has grown a lot as an actor since the show started. But the character development of Oliver Queen from being a stone cold killer to someone who has to work in the gray areas of morality has been pristine. No matter how much Chase goaded Oliver to kill him, he failed. Finally Oliver declared in the most pivotal moment- "That's who I was, that's not who I am anymore."
The fight scenes were beautifully choreographed both in the flashbacks and in the present considering there were so many moving pieces, it was just a treat to watch.
The episode didn't fail on the emotional level as well. The starting conversation with Slade was done beautifully. After a long time the romantic side of Felicity didn't seem forced. It was genuine. I might even stretch to say that the kiss was a GOODBYE. Every character had something to offer. Malcolm sacrificing his life for Thea proved that he does love his daughter. The look of despair on Oliver's face when Chase pulls a Moriarty can be seen on every person's face who watches this episode. But the most gut-wrenching scene was the conversation of Oliver with his mom. It was just pure love.
I could have rated this episode 15/10.
Arrow ended season 5 on a huge cliffhanger. Though the show will not kill all its supporting characters, there will be casualties. It will be a long 4-month wait to find out who will make it out of the island alive and who will bite the dust.
