The Northman (2022)

This kind of revenge tale has been staged too often: boring
27 December 2022
The Northman is an ordinary revenge tale, mixed with goofy sorcery and (expected) brutality. In short, a northern king is murdered by his own brother who also tries to murder the young nephew, the king's son. Yet the kid escapes, grows up and returns for revenge. After lots of heads have rolled, the movie stages a western-like duel, between the murderer uncle and the returned nephew. Nothing original or elaborate in this: we have seen it time and again from ancient Rome to western spaghettis - boring and predictable. The Icelandic landscapes, though only barely explored, are worth watching. Unfortunately, the oversimplified tale and the nonsense supernatural scenes keeps us from engaging.

A good idea spoiled by bad acting and miscasting
21 September 2022
Cluzet is definitely an error of casting in this movie. Totally unconvincing, physically inappropriate, made a fool of himself. Sophie Marceau is enchanting and compensates somehow, but the movie is too shallow and pretentious. It's a shame, because the idea was not so bad: a man meets a woman, love at first sight, can't forget each other, push it almost to the limit, but ultimately there is too much at stake and sex would set them into a path with no return, jeopardizing everything around. They have the strength to stop, backpaddle, leave what might have been a beautiful thing unspoiled to eternity.

Ok, but not with these actors, under this direction, going from cliché-to-cliché in an unconvincingly shallow movie.

Too much nonsense
3 January 2020
Soldiers moving across enemy lines walking side by side, teasing each other, speaking outloud. Soldiers moving across a field as a pack rather than dispersed over space. A gut racist fellow that all of a sudden changes his gut feelings and becomes generous.

Every infantry soldier is lectured over and over that if dead bodies are found, or ammunition, or any sort of apparently abandoned goodies, it is very likely that some mine will go off when things are moved around. Yet this basic knowledge seemed totally alien to these experienced soldiers. I could go on and on... All this nonsense becomes distracting and then irritating. I quit before the end of this otherwise very predictable movie.

Soap opera with bad acting
20 July 2019
The only thing good in this movie is the music. Other than that, this is plain soap opera with bad acting. The attempts to be funny or romantic, become ruined by the unconvincing acting. It's still worst when it pretends to be sad or attempts to give us 'lessons of life'. Saddly it portrays a stereotyped picture of mexicans that is probably biased. Anyway, if you like latin soap operas go for it. If not, you will find it irritating and a waste of time.

Unconvincing
12 January 2019
This is the sort of movie subject I enjoy, too bad beeing so unconvincing. The parents are impulsive, childish, and imature. The boy is calm, thoughful though hesitant, and unbelievably mature for his age. As if in a parallel universe where parents and children change roles.
