Lovers (2019)
Charming, immersive and thoughtful
Lovers is a romantic tragicomedy about two lovers who spend their last 24 hours together in Berlin before they plan to go their separate ways. I was truly immersed in the narrative. Knowing that the dialogue was mostly improvised and that the main part of this film was shot within 24 hours in Berlin gave me a deep appreciation for the creative process that went into making this story feel as nuanced, realistic and as alive as it did for me. I was enchanted by the performances of Björn von der Wellen and Magdalena Steinlein. The story felt like Björns constant attempt to bring Magdalena's character around to seeing the connection that the two have. The subjects that are raised through their conversations and "When Harry Met Sally" style talking heads provided honest glimpses into their lives; the subject matter around the bigger questions that come up for us in life resonated a lot with me and really carried me through the story with them.
I think that to create a piece like this that is largely improvised with bold artistic choices throughout reflects the courage, creativity and artistic spirit of the director Rebecca Panian and the filmmakers behind this.
