Barbarella (1968)
Hot Jane Fonda
For a Jane Fonda fan this was the best movie that ever was made. She get's naked right away in the opening credits. But, putting Jane aside, one should watch this movie and enjoy the overall fun of this movie. The special effects were very Flash Gorden. The over all comic book effect is fun. Deno De Lourentis produced it and Janes husband (at the time), Rodger Vidam directed it. This was a early film for a lot of great, directors, producers and actors. The special effect/background were very well done. It is quite campy in a lot of ways with a lot of sexual overtones, i.e. the (orgasmitron), a few flights, and other such topics which were not talked about at that time. Watch it and enjoy it as an Italian western done in 2045.
Prime Cut (1972)
Kinky weird harvesting
This movie is fun to watch and has a plot. Very good actors in it and it does send a message about slavery even in this day and age. It puts Gene Hackman in a good villain role, after his performance in this movie he secured his place as Lex Luther in a future film. Lee Marvin, even though he is a mobster, he becomes a good guy. Sissy looks very good as a white slave girl getting ready to be auctioned off. The wiener scene made sure that I did not eat any hotdogs for ten years. The only thing that really put this movies special effect down was the combine that they used in the chase scene. It looked really cheesy, real combines have flat paddles, The sharp point they showed are used on mowers and do not work the way they showed it. All in all this movie is fun.
The Last Detail (1973)
Worth watching for its online with the right time period.
Jack does an OK job, but he has already done better things in his acting career. Mr.Quaid does a very good job,I did not like his performances in a lot of stuff that came out in the 1980's. But, movies that he did after this one helped to make him the actor he is today, very good. Carol Kane as a prostitute in this movie, I wish, I would have paid thousands , maybe millions for a ho like her. The movie is fun but it is dated, it is like what people really were like back then. You have to go into another time slot and let it take you away. /The military was close to the way people acted, but there was some blowup of the way things really were, back then.
Alexander (2004)
A very long line for a gigantic epic.
Waiting outside the Metreon in San Francisco,in a line of three hundred, for over an hour and getting the last two tickets on the free screening pass, it was worth sitting through the 3 hour epic. If I would have had to pay for it I would just as soon have seen it on TV. There were some memorable moments in the film and some great acting. Angelina Jolie did a great job as Alexander's mother. Anthony Hopkins was also great in his performance. Colin Farrell at times did not seem to be Alexander and seemed to drift with the movie at times.
I do agree with the advertising that this might be Oliver Stone's most ambitious project, but was disappointed with the overall outcome of it. This was an average epic and should not be confused with some of the great epics of the past. Lots of hype does not a great movie make.
The Loved One (1965)
Dark Fun
Saw this movie for the first time back in 1977 while I was taking a film class. It was required to pass the course. I could not figure out why I did not see it before, it contains all the quality's which I like in a dark comedy. I feel that this movie is a must see for any dark comedy movie buff. The acting can be a bit campy at times, but this just adds to the fun of the movie. The story line is weird enough and the spoof on Hollywood and the glamor of Hollywood even after you die is great. If you ever get a chance, see this movie. It took several years of searching but I finally found a VHS copy of this film. I loaned it out to a friend and it disappeared, but the memories are still there.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (1947)
Blah, Blah, Blah
Being a big fan of James Thurber and not a big fan of Danny Kaye, I have some reservations on this movie. While Danny Kaye tries to be a Walter Mitty, he does not succeed. He does the same Danny Kaye stuff he does in all of his movies and it gets boring seeing the same actor doing the same gags in all of his movies. It is like one big never ending story. While the movie was based lightly on the James Thurber work, it does not transfer the Thurber energy, the slant which Thurber puts on his stories. It's always fun seeing Boris Karloff in some roll besides being a monster. It is also fun to see the Goldwynn Girls. If RKO would have stayed a little more true to the story it would have helped the movie.
I did however enjoy the remake of Walter Mitty a couple of years ago and it seemed to follow the authors intentions a little better.
Kelly's Heroes (1970)
Loved this movie
Saw this movie when I was in high school, when it first came out, and fell in love with the negitive waves man.Donald Sutherlands dialog became a part of the everyday conversation. Negative waves were just not kool. Clint Eastwood did a great performance. I saw the movie four nights in a row and asked the theater manager for one of the playbills. It was a four sheet poster with the crew of Kelly's Heros riding in a tank that was shaped like a submarine sandwich. Had that poster on my wall for several years. Still have the poster and it is a little ruff around the edges, but in great shape. Have it all rolled up and inside a weatherproof tube, should be in great shape when I finally get a home theater set up.
