A Series of Unfortunate Events (2017)
A show where everyone is an idiot
It's not that I haven't tried: I just gave up in the middle of episode 6 of series 2.
First, the whole show (until now, at least) can be summarised in 4 steps: kids go to live with some idiot(s), a ridiculously disguised Count Olaf appears (and only the children recognise him because the others are, well, idiots), Count Olaf is discovered and the children manage to escape. Rinse, repeat, ad nauseam, till you're bored to death.
Secondly, everyone is an idiot. At first, the idiotic banker was barely bearable, but when I gave up, the children were in a village *full* of complete idiots. I'm not sure how we are supposed to swallow this rubbish.
Many reviews say that this is a faithful rendition of the books, and I really hope that's not the case, because this is an insult to the viewers' intelligence. I get this is a kids' show, but that doesn't mean it has to be this stupid. Harry Potter is a kids' book, and in comparison to this, it's a literary (and film-making) masterpiece.
La pivellina (2009)
Worthless
Contrary to what the synopsis says, when the abandoned child is found (and that happens in the first 5 minutes of the movie), no effort at all is made by the circus woman (or by anyone else) to find the child's mother. That's of course a wasted opportunity, because it would have made an interesting starting point. Instead, she and the others simply keep the child more or less as any parent would do, with the movie going nowhere for more than one hour and a half. The cute little child is funny at times (as are most children that aren't spoiled), but the film is utterly lacking in story, acting, directing and photography. There are a million ways to use 100 minutes of your free time, so I'd suggest you avoid this at all costs.
