Nightmare Cinema (2018)
Soft Bigotry of low expectations for horror
Not much to say about this. Simple straight to video mediocre horror that really shouldn't exist with today's resources for film-making. VHS and the ABC's of Death have shown us that novel anthology horror can still be made on the cheap. Somehow all of these director's, who have made good work before, missed the mark by a lot here. This is why you need a guy like Charlie Brooker (Black Mirror) to maintain quality control over the writing and production. This should have been shelved, as it's an embarrassment to everyone involved. All these directors can and have done much better. What a mess!!!
Us (2019)
There goes the neighborhood?
Black family is subdued and terrorized by themselves. Perhaps Peele knows what this symbolizes, but the plot-points are so unbelievable, it just looks like a Rorschach-test weaved together with slick style and editing. What a mess.
Hell House LLC II: The Abaddon Hotel (2018)
Just a mess of "found footage"
This seems like a film requested by Shudder, shot for nothing, and filmed with zero effort whatsoever. This is the type of generic work that a group of teenagers could shoot on weekends, and release on YouTube, so not sure why Shudder would allow this on their platform with films like The Innkeepers.
Pro tip: calling something scary, just because you want it to be is the very definition of lazy writing.
With a modicum of effort, this could have been an interesting installment for this unique property, but the filmmakers couldn't be bothered apparently.
Get Out (2017)
Tyler Perry presents Black Mirror
I'll make this brief, as others have already made excellent points regarding the enormous amount of undeserved hype surrounding this film. In summary:
1. Anyone who tells you that there is a "twist" ending is lying to you. Twenty minutes into the film it becomes apparent exactly where this is going..............with zero surprises.
2. Each and every bit of comedy in the film falls flat, which should tell you something about a director who supposedly makes his living writing sketch-comedy.
3. This film is completely devoid of nuance, a comment that Tyler Perry himself has said about his own films in interviews.
In closing, the most disappointing aspect of this film is that there isn't much here to discuss. Just a bunch racially-charged stock thriller-tropes with a "lifetime movie" level plot. Much like Ranchero music, this is art for the dumb.
Suggestions: Beyond the Black Rainbow, Black Mirror, Don't Breathe, Green Room
The Devil's Candy (2015)
There's a reason that you never heard about this one
I'm a big fan of the Loved Ones, but this is just hot garbage.
Filled with one cliché after another that sound like they're out of a Lifetime TV-movie, this film just piles on one generic trope after another disguised as "Metal" which comes off more as "christian rock". This is the type of film someone's square parents would make and call it "edgy".
Each and every piece of symbolism blatantly smacks the viewer over the head like it's desperately seeking attention. "Hey......did you see how the main character looks like Jesus?"........yes.....everyone saw it, understood the obvious symbolism, and yawned.
Not sure what the director had in mind here, but I would bet that his next project is going to be on a much tighter budget. Perhaps he would be better served with a focus on remakes........much like some bands are better playing covers.
The Void (2016)
There's no actual film here
This is what you get when you combine the talents of an Art Director and an FX Designer with no script, and not even a basic story structure. The results are a bunch of scenes built around creature- effects, and hints of a deeper mythology which never actually comes to fruition, leaving the viewer to try and piece together a non- existent plot. This is truly a film about nothing........nothing at all.
Unless you have $100 Million and a few giant movie-stars, eye candy alone just won't cut it.
It should also be noted that this is yet another example of a film with excellent poster design, but nothing to back it up. I believe they call that "all hat......no cattle".
Maybe we'll go back to the Cannon strategy of making posters first, and then worrying about turning it into a movie.
The Nightmare (2015)
Speculation Run-amok
From the creators of Room 237 (excellent doc) comes stories of sleep paralysis. If you're into 90min of hearing about someone else's dreams, then go for it! If not, then this will seem like pure tedium with hack visuals to match.
If you find this film scary, then save yourself some time and just type in "horror" into your Netflix or Amazon search box, and watch anything that pops up.
Calling this film a documentary is a stretch, as there is zero professional medical info or research about the subject whatsoever. Instead, we get story after story of hyperbolic romanticized experiences during the least credible time in your life; as you drift off to sleep.
