Blue Valentine (2010)
Finally, a realistic romantic movie
Love is not only a product that always turns out great. Love is also not a energy that always lives forever. Even with the greatest memories, one doesn't necessarily hold on a love pattern with another person for his or her entire life. I was happy that Blue Valentine showed that side of love. Love can be filled with hatred. Love can express jealousy. It's a strong feeling, so why wouldn't it arise other strong emotions?
Blue Valentine represents realisticly a failing relationship. From the over-the-shoulder perspective, the depth of field mainly focusing on character and the exceptionnal acting by Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling, it felt like you couldn't stand being in that relationship. It was so real.
Also, kudos to the soundtrack.
St. Agatha (2018)
A good ol' cliché
I'll keep it short. The plot is unoriginal. The writing is terribly dumb and dull. It is not really entertaining.
I give 2 stars because the acting and the score were good.
Lost in Translation (2003)
What most people were not ready for...
Lost in Translation is a very misunderstood movie. If you are expecting to have a plot with bunch of twist and suspense, you WILL be disappointed. Its energy doesn't rely on the narrative aspect itself, but more the emotion that it provide. The atmosphere is simple on the first glance but yet very profound in terms
of loneliness and boredom. The film is not boring, but represents the lethargy of Charlotte (Scarlett Johansson) and Bob Harris (Bill Murray). Sofia Coppola's goal was probably to emerge an empathy in the spectator, without having to make an effort. Because whoever you are, you highly most likely felt loneliness at one point in your life. It might have been a good feeling or a bad one, but it happened. Lost in Translation provides a nostalgic response to give you a break.
You know what? Maybe it's okay to be lonely, to be bored.
Two americans in Tokyo; what else to redefine your identity markers. A chance to reborn, a new hope to change a painful or empty life. In a city with multiple possibilites, this movie excels in making you feel something if it isn't by the music, the settings or the well-acted characters.
Take it as it is, don't expect a narratively suspenseful movie and you will enjoy where it takes you.
