Hoboken Hollow (2006)
cheese,formula and guts...
this is not a good film to watch if you have ever seen any other 'theres strange related people living out their on the ranch' films. it offers nothing new and just plods along between shots of various transients getting tortured to 'look here i am eating some strange sort of jerky' shots....oh i wonder what that could be. well at least the pigs always get fed, which is probably why they do some of the best acting in the film and you learn never to eat bacon with a tattoo on it. but apart from that unless you live on a ranch, look like your strange relatives, are short on food and need some good evening 'party game' tips it might be better to give this film a miss.
The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things (2004)
a gob smacker...not as disturbing as Requiem for a dream but not far off..
well i have just finished watching this and it is a bit like being hit by a truck (not quite as big as the ones in it!!)it roller coasts along with its rough edge (to put it mildly) with a very late night mtv 2 feel to it,helped along by some classic cameos as others have stated. asia's character sarah is a nightmare but unlike some others here i felt it did give you an idea as to why she had turned out this way and why she accepted the wreck that was her life and knew no other way to treat her son, that is not to say it was good ...obviously !!!they both seemed like lost and seriously mentally disturbed characters,a few times i did think for the kid "for Gods sake this is getting too crazy, surely the kid would have at least a small break" but with the surreal animation scenes it kind of saved it for me from becoming too ott. and i really did constantly want her to 'do the right thing' it reminded me,in its darkness, of some bits of Natasha lyonne's films, such as confessions of a trick baby,it desensitises you a little and then smacks you in right in the gob and back into shock mode. to cut it short (ish..) asia is a genius and i loved it,WATCH IT!!!!
Maniac Nurses (1990)
the value of cheese and tack...
what can you really say??its a must see for fans of the ridiculous, bizarre and so far fetched its actually really funny. any film that has a baby born with an elvis tattoo, women running around with shorts so small you can tell their birth signs brandishing BIG guns, and insatiable desires for sex and violence is alright with me. complete escapism and fantastic cheesy narration make it a tack lovers dream... i am not sure any of the actors worked again but i know if i had made this film i would be proud as it seems to mock the very core of the bad action and porn films that so often take themselves to seriously. hats off...lingerie out.
Desert Hearts (1985)
a romantic lesbian love story
this film is beautiful, when it came out i thought that all lesbians look like the cigar chewing suzanne york's 'childie' in The Killing of Sister George,i have since found out that although a few do this does not have to be the case!! it tells a story of two very different women who end up falling in love. it has its runaway moments and then it has its moments of sexual 'stunted breath'tension, which you don't forget when you are 14! it romantises the 50s in Nevada so we all want a slice of it,and it makes even the most cynical among us warm to country music. it is definitely a lesbian feel good movie,my God they don't even end up with a stratch let alone suicide for being 'dirty lesbians',so if you put it in the context of when it 'came out',1985 it really has to be seen as a pure classic. everyone i reckon,male,female,gay...etc would love a friend called silver who sings country music and has girly chats with you in a bubble bath while her husband brings you refreshments...well maybe its just me but you must see i have a point??........
Secretary (2002)
a curious film at a curious time
well just watched this film tonight which i have had knocking around for a while as i wasn't sure what else to watch. i actually quite enjoyed it,i thought that Maggie Gyllenhaal and James Spader (playing his usual off the wall sexual type-which he does so well!!) made quite a believable pair, i needed something quite light but cant quite ever give in to romantic comedies,so this was just the trick. yes it did follow the traditional pattern that romantic films do,but hey give it a break! the sexual tension was beautifully portrayed, though it could have been used more and the relationship portrayed in more detail. actually the bit i was most disappointed with was when things started to get more 'normal' towards the end. it doesn't rewrite war and peace but it passes the time in way that is none too painful...or is that painfuil???...
Saw (2004)
cant believe this film
Went to see this yesterday after watching the Grudge and could not believe what an annoying film it was. I have read a number of reviews which seem to rate it but cannot see it myself. It seemed badly written, badly edited and badly acted. I could not believe the doctor, whose reaction when faced in a more than tricky situation seemed comical(sorry Cary Elwes fans!) I am not a violent person but very soon into the film i wished most people in it would in fact hurry up and die as it became more like a manson/bauhaus video crossed with Seven and a dashing of amateur dramatics. Sorry horror fans this is more of a straight to video in my book, just my opinion but if you lose the will to live at least 23 times during a film its not that good.
