The Creator (2023)
Beautiful film with a surprise twist?
An amazing film to look at, but, as so many have pointed out, often nonsensical unnecessarily confused. The cinematography is stunning, the special effects are amazing, and the performances are decent, but the story makes little to no sense. Would have benefitted from sticking to a simpler plot, and by expanding each part of the story to actually ensure they make sense and explain the characters' motivations. There were loads of really interesting threads left dangling. Kept waiting for a twist as everything had been mad, but predictable.
I think the twist is that the script was actually written by AI...
Cashback (2006)
Beautifully shot and charming
A lovely film. Really beautifully shot. It's a film that feels very much written by someone in their early twenties but with the artistic eye of someone much older. The story is a little corny and some areas are slightly underdeveloped in places, but the characters are painfully realistic, and it's very of its time. Funny, sweet, romantic and very, very easy on the eye, this film is really an 8, but I gave it a 9 because I enjoyed it so much.
The Follower (2019)
Disappointing
While it has some nice visual elements, this is poorly scripted and terribly acted. The music doesn't fit at all, the facial disfigurement make up is unnecessary, and the ending was disappointing.
It feels like it was written by a 13 year old.
Mother! (2017)
Wonderful director. Good, but not great film
Aronofsky is clearly a gifted director. But having seen nearly all of his films, there is a pattern. They suffer when he writes. His writing is just too heavy and pretentious. It's a shame as I enjoy almost every shot of every film he makes, but this, Noah, Pi, and Fountain all drag drag drag. They try too hard to be clever and powerful and teach you about God. When Aronofsky takes someone else's story and makes a film, it's genius, but too often it's just a harrowing couple of hours that's frankly trying too hard. I enjoyed the film, but it wasn't his best
The West Wing (1999)
The best show to ever have existed
I am from England, and although well educated I had only a smattering of knowledge regarding American Politics (I knew you could win a two horse race with less than 50% but that's about it). I am at the end of series four, as far as I can purchase on DVD, and I only started watching the West Wing about a six weeks ago. It is the best television show I have ever seen, uplifting and touching at the same time. It is also one of very few programmes aimed only at intelligent audiences. I love the writing style, and the fact that conversations are rarely explained and often not even finished (count how many times in an episode that the next line is said in your head but not on screen). If only we could make everyone in the world watch this programme and take an interest in politics. The writing, acting and directing of the show are top class, and I defy anyone to watch it and not wish that's how the world was actually run. As for the depiction of Republicans, I find that from across the pond the Republicans seem a damn sight nicer on the West Wing than in real life, give the writers a break, they never say Democrats are right, only that they believe they are. Bartlet has never refused good council. I eagerly anticipate the rest of this series. I mean really.. if anyone's got any knock off region 1 DVDs of series 5 and 6 send them to me.
