Run the Burbs (2022)
Fun show to watch
It's a fun show to watch. The characters are likeable. The opening montage, from the first episode, of carrying the groceries from the car to the house was hilarious -- very good physical comedy.
I do feel it's missing some tension. Everything just seems okay. The characters are all charismatic and a bit zany without any actual problems. There's no plain anchor character for us to relate to and experience the zaniness with. So that does make it tough to embrace it and leaves the stories a bit flat.
Blade Runner 2049 (2017)
Long and empty
The protagonist being definitively a replicant himself made it less compelling for me to watch. It was like watching two computers play chess against one another rather than a showdown between a human chess master and a computer. Who cares which computer wins? Yeah yeah, questions of AI and debating what is and isn't life can be entertained, and were successfully in the first Blade Runner, but not this one. I just didn't find it engaging enough to care either way.
And the fact that Sean Young's character could only be worked into it by making Sean appear young via CGI was just offensive. Why can only male actors, such as Ford, be allowed to age, but female actors like Young can only appear as young? An example of modern misogyny, in my opinion.
Had some interesting effects, but overall a long dull experience. Go see the original and not waste time with this one.
Total Recall (2012)
Terrible
The story: the government of Britain is going to wage war and wreak havoc on one of its colonies until the heroic American saves the day! Seriously, it's that stupid.
The fact that this terrible movie shares the same name as the mysterious and intriguing Schwarzenegger/Stone film of 1990 is an absolute insult. There is no suspense, mystery, or intrigue in this version of Total Recall. Both the central character and certainly the audience pretty well know the real situation from the beginning. So, rather than sharing in the doubts of the central character who, in the 1990 original, isn't sure what is real and what isn't, we instead simply get formulaic action mixed with a bit of romance. So, don't forget your barf bag if you dare see this abysmal stink-bomb. This movie is an insult to everyone's intelligence.
