Restless Natives (1985)
nostalgia outweighs flaws
A film that improves with age for anyone who is/was a resident of Edinburgh as it has a nice nostalgic feel to it. Technically, the film is beautifully shot with a combination of Edinburgh council estates and the more tourist friendly city centre and the sprawling backdrop of the Scottish highlands. The acting is acceptable at most but a common complaint with any film set in the east coast is the west coast accents used throughout. Another confusing matter is the use of Glasgow in some scenes (the cemetery scenes)although these problems would appear to be superficial to anyone outside Edinburgh. Overall a pleasant, pre - irony slice of Scottish cinema.
Intacto (2001)
highly stylised but also original
Great Spanish film with a wealth of great European actors delivering good performances in this intriguing thriller.bound to be regurgitated into some third rate American film with the plot wrung out for simpler folk to understand the meandering plot line.max von sydow is perhaps the better known actor in the great film(outside of spain that is)but all cast members put on a solid display with my favourite actor in the whole piece being Antonio Dechent who plays alejandro the elusive bullfighter. for some people this film may contain too many twists and turns and a very involving plotine but isn't that what people want? rather than some overly simplified American nonsense?
