Bloodshot (2020)
Any Diesel Fan Should Enjoy This Movie
I love Vin Diesel movies, but let's face it. They are not usually Oscar worthy. The plots are thin, and the action is hard and fast. Neither of these are bad points. Does the trailer tell you everything. Pretty much. Does that stop you from enjoying it? It shouldn't. Anyone who enjoyed xXx should enjoy this. Anyone who thinks Last Witch Hunter is a 3-4 star movie, especially if they liked it anyway, should absolutely LOVE this.
Holiday Date (2019)
I couldn't finish it.
To be clear, I watch every Hallmark movie, every Saturday, in every season: Winterfest, Forever Love, Spring Fever, June Weddings, Fall Harvest, and, of course, Countdown to Christmas. The predictability of the plots, including the singe kiss at the end of the movie, is comforting to me. I have also enjoyed Brittany Bristow as a supporting actress in several of these movies and looked forward to seeing her as the female romantic lead. She did not disappoint, but the storyline did. This is probably because I think the premise of being so unwilling/unable to be honest with your parents that you find it preferable to hitch your wagon to a stranger is just so remarkably unhealthy and inevitably disastrous that I can't get past it. As I was looking at other reviews, I realized that I just hate the "impostor" plot. Therefore, I qualify my 4-star review with that disclaimer. You may feel otherwise, so press forward.
Onward (2020)
I don't know what I expected, but...
I didn't get it. I guess I figured that Disney/Pixar, Holland, and Pratt works make a can't fail, delightful film, but I was wrong. Let me start by addressing the question of how so many of us gave lower scores before the movie was released. We didn't. Theaters offered advanced screenings the weekend before. That said, I didn't hate the film, but Pratt's character was not just a foil to Holland's. He was irritatingly inept at best and downright disastrous at worst. The explanation of magic being cast aside in a society of dwarves, centaurs, manticores, etc. is too hurriedly explained and illogical. The climax and resolution were the best parts of the film, which does mean that you leave feeling better about it, but those last fifteen minutes can't propel the preceding hit-or-miss hour to excellence.
