As a kid, I began to collect movies and music on cassettes, cds, and VHS. Jump to 9/11, the time arose for me to find my real passion after being spared from the attack on the World Trade Center.
I can't sing a lick. In fact, I'm the only person in my immediate family that can't. That revelation made this decision to become a writer extremely easy.
I was always interested in the stories I heard in East Texas which my grandmother and mother told me. Horror and comedy stories held my attention for hours. Probably during my college years at The University of Texas, I became fascinated with multiple plots leading to assassinations in the 60s. It probably led to documentaries of the 60s becoming my food for thought rather than reality shows of the 2000s.
Follow me and you'll find dozens of stories being written, re-written, produced, and directed in the same timeline. I'm heading toward telling the stories that I daydream about.
I'm currently directing the "SOULed Out" films, in post for the Catfish Station Documentary, and organizing the reunion film for my little league Superbowl squad.

The Photograph (2020)
Rich Photography and Themes
It's a rich collection of portraits especially when you reach the 2nd level of characters (mother, grandmother, fathers). That's where most of the story becomes more fascinating.
I love photography. This movie has quite a bit. The colors, saturatuon and contrast is a part of the characters as well. Colors are pretty consistent throughout and they work.
Comedy is expected with Issa but she isn't the comic relief. Another family is lends to that.
I feel that more of us should've seen this in the theaters. Should've made over $100 million in revenue. We would see more movies by us including people that look like us. We would be seen, unapologetically, as black, brown, yellow, and red people. Hollywood would've quickly put 5 to 10 more movies in rotation similar to this had the return been extremely high. Same had "Uncorked" been a theatrical release.
Watching again on dvd right now.
Who Killed Malcolm X? (2019)
A Great Investigative Work
I was he of little faith...prior to hitting the play button. Yet, I was in awe down to the last second of this film. It's a great investigation that the filmmakers should be proud of. These filmmakers were able to unearth more than I've seen in the death of Malcolm X.
It doesn't go without a fair amount of cringing on my part. Pinpointing the shotkiller is a huge step and you all already knew dangers in proceeding with the "allegations". This film goes to a higher level as the "real" killers are profiled.
It doesn't stop there.
Another level is attained to shed further light on bureaus and teams that make no effort to expose truth even though it's documented almost immediately after the event in question. They knew. They were there. They swept it. Amazing.
Graphically, you all did a great job in showing people that were involved and moving the story along with the guide that led the way. It was also interesting to almost see him reveal more of himself in the last 6th of the film.
I only had one issue. I felt that the introduction of legacy paintings and newly reproduced photos appearing in the first segment, maybe as late as the second segment, came early for me. It took me in a direction that often reserved for the conclusion of movies. It was a look into how people memorialize Malcolm X today (similar to the ending of Spike Lee's X). With 85% of the narrative remaining, it felt premature.
I would be proud to have completed this much investigative work. I know how it feels during less impactful investigations so I can imagine the impact of this historical event.
Know Thy Enemy (2009)
Well Shot Indie
"Know Thy Enemy" is one movie that I can watch multiple times. After watching several times, I noticed more plot information that I missed initially. I missed the back story of the rappers on the first viewing but it was evident later.
I remember being impressed by the shots during the first viewing and that remains to this day. Also, make note that the female scenery is nice. Not sure why Tamara McGill doesn't show up in more films.
One thing that I didn't like about the film was the cover. Lionsgate made a poor choice in my opinion. I like the cover that is shown on this site more than the "lowrider" cover. I know it happens often but really, they could've kept that original (or earlier) version of the cover. I think the newer one sits better on the rack.
The commentary on the DVD is also a nice add.
The Male Groupie (2004)
They do exist
I was pleasantly surprised by this film. It was one of the films presented in the HBO Showcase at the American Black Film Festival. WE focus on the female groupies but this movies exposes the guys that are riding other guys' coattails. Very funny!!! The story came across very well and there were several people that I was familiar with including the star of Playmakers. Dialogue was natural and not forced. I could easily see this as a b-plot of a feature film. Christopher or Morocco, I'd love to show this at my short film festival in Houston called Frame2Frame. I met you both at the ABFF.
