California's Gold (1991)
Huell Howser loved Southern California
He was not born in California, but he made California like many others before and after him his home. The series from the public broadcaster KCET covered nearly everything Southern California has to offer. There's a lot he didn't get to, but Southern California is a very big place. You can access the entire archive of the program on Chapman University's website. You can also find content on KCET and on Google's Youtube. I rewatch these shows whenever I want to relax and destress. Chapman University in Orange was connected to the Los Angeles Red Car public transportation system featured in California Gold and also in the film Who Framed Roger Rabit.
Arrested Development (2003)
Underrated television, as told by Ron Howard
My all time favorite fictional television program, Arrested Development is one of the best tv series in history. I grew up in Orange County, California. This show was more than than show to me. This was my childhood. I related growing up to Michael Cera's character. This show and Malcolm in the Middle were my goto shows.
Seriously, spoilers for a nearly two decade old tv series!!!
Arrested Development better represents Orange County than The OC did.
Buster Bluff in one episode tried to escape his commitment to the Army by fleeing to Mexico. He followed the cleaning lady to Santa Ana, California, which is in central Orange County, and has a large Mexican-American population (largest concentration of Mexican nationals outside Mexico). Buster, who was raised very isolated and sheltered, mistakenly assumed he was in Mexico. Santa Ana is a few miles from Newport Beach, California, which was where his mother Lucille Bluff lived.
And it's Orange County; not the OC! Don't call it that! No touching! There's always money in the banana stand!
I wish I had Ron Howard walking around behind me narrating my life.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Must see
If you see one film this year, or this decade, let it be Oppenheimer. This is one of the greatest films of all of history. This is a deep film too. I am broke, taking money out of my IRA to pay a bit off of the credit cards in order to see this movie. I needed to see this film opening day in IMAX. I am glad I did. Very important film. It is rated R, but I would still recommend you see this movie with your older children supervised. That is if they are well behaved. This is a movie that you don't take a restroom break halfway during. Go before. Don't buy a large soda and popcorn. I never do anyway. But I sometimes buy a double Jack and Coke at AMC Theatres. But this film I decided not to get a drink. No distractions.
