Kukumi (2005)
A great movie of a really sad story
Once upon a time there was a repression that nobody was able to hear about. There were people who were suffering.. and nobody heard their voice. This movie shows exactly what happened after years of repression and years of suffering to an innocent nation in Kosova, place which only a few people know about. As the movie shows.. a group of civilian people were held in place as 'prisoners of war' by the Serbian military. As soon as the Kumanovo agreement takes place, the Serbian guards leave the place and the group of people that get the freedom which they would never enjoy. The consequences of the tortures that had previously been done to them were very bad.. all the people remained with mental disorders. Kukumi, one of the main characters of the movie, is a homeless guy, whose only asset is a flute which he used to make music when he would feel down. Hasan is a young guy, whose parents die in the war and his older brother turns the back to him once he comes back to his house. And Mara is a young and beautiful homeless girl that has nothing in her life. Kukumi and Hasan fall in love with Mara. Although they would never be able to make their dream true, both of them show that they do have feelings although their brain no longer lives the real life. Kukumi, Hasan and Mara hang around the place where they used to be held but the such awaited freedom for them meant nothing. Their world remained so small, their vision would never be as before. At the end Kukumi continues his endless journey to nowhere... while Hasan and Mara go back to the place where they used to be held.. because that was the only place they felt 'comfortable' at. This is a real masterpiece of the director Isa Qosja and great credit to Luan Jaha, Donat Qosja and Anisa Ismaili for a tremendous display. This movie has already won two festivals in Balkans and could yet have another word to say in the future. This movie has also been the first production of Kosova's film company "KosovaFilmi" in the post war era here in Kosova. A great movie 10/10
Dashuria e Bjeshkëve të Nemuna (1997)
A great mirror of Kosova's highland traditions
This movie shows the traditions of Kosovar Albanians that live in highlands and also tells a love story of two young people, a boy who lives in a village and a girl who just comes back from the USA to her native homeland. The director through the movie tells of the traditions and the hospitality found in the houses of the highlanders. The movie also shows the typical clothes that highlanders in some parts of Kosova have and also the national clothes that are worn during weddings and dances in villages. The great display of Faruk Begolli, a very famous Kosovar actor, is one among the best of his displays. In this movie he plays the father of the girl who comes back to the homeland and then she falls in love with a guy whom she can never marry because of family relations she has with him... Unfortunately, as this movie was made during the time when Kosova was under the Serbian regime, there was no possibility to make subtitles for non-albanian speakers, and the movie was only recorded on VHS, hopefully over the next years there will be a DVD release of the movie which definitely is worth watching, especially for people who like to know about different cultures and traditions.
O Clone (2001)
Very educational in some parts
This soap opera is about to end here in Prishtina, but even though it has not finished yet I can wright a short summary based on what I saw and what I thought is worth saying. The thing I find most useful is the damage caused by drugs in social/health life and the horrible consequences that a person has to take after starting to use drugs and the suffering he/she causes to the family, him/herself and the entire society. The other thing worth mentioning is the human cloning, though the idea of cloning sounds fascinating at first, the consequences are not the ones the mankind would like to have. Who would be the father? The clone maker or the person whose cell has been taken to make the clone? Or actually the father of the person who's cell has been used to make the human clone..? I guess I would feel very bad in that case (being a human clone) and the idea of seeing myself younger/older would make me proper sick. Otherwise the fate/love stories are just fairy tales to make the audience (women most) to watch the soap operas though the audience can learn a lot of things from "O Clone"
Rane (1998)
Greatest movie ever made for the ex-Yu
Since I'm quite familiar with the Serbian nation and their people, I can just paid credit to the director for a perfect direction of a perfect movie that's based on a pure reality showing every detail without any exaggeration at all. I already watched the movie several times and I'd watch it over and over again without being bored even a minute. The movie itself shows how the life was in the ex-Yu (Belgrade) and I have to give credit to Pinki's father who in my opinion was the best actor alongside Kure, for brilliantly playing the role of a redundant officer, reflecting his huge disappointment towards the government for releasing him from his duties and for never being able to enjoy "his five minutes", despite committing himself 100% to the army in his entire life. I guess that was just one of so many disappointments shown during the movie and there are so many more things which unfortunately could not be shown in the movie, apart from the battles between the Serbian and croatian forces in the short sequence that was shown on TV. That was maybe one of the reasons that the people of Serbia hardly knew what was going around their country and what their government had been up to, while the queues for buying bread were miles long... as it's shown in the movie. Once again credit to the director, crew and especially the actors for performing at the highest level possible.
