The Circle (2017)
It's actually better than the book!
It's rather rare that you can say that a movie is better than the book, but in my opinion, this is definitely true in this particular case.
When I read the book, there were certain things about Mae that annoyed me and I was quite happy to see those things changed in the movie. After I finished the book (and whilst reading it), I couldn't believe how Mae basically killed her ex boyfriend, so I was quite happy with the way they filmed that scene and made it obvious that Mae didn't want to go after Mercer.
In the book Mercer's described as someone chubby (and a really obnoxious and unpleasant person IMO) and as someone Mae can't even imagine ever being with, in the movie they seem to get along quite well, despite the disagreements about social media.
Only thing that I had wished to see in the movie (had it been someone else other than John Boyega playing the part of Ty as in the book he's described with gray, nearly white hair and as someone really mysterious which John really isn't) was the relationship between himself and Mae. It couldn't be more platonic in the movie, whereas in the book there was always this (sexual) tension between those two.
All in all, this movie really makes you think how much we all are glued to our phone/tablet/computer screens and how much all of that affects us.
Definitely recommend seeing it, whether you've read the book or not.
Before I Fall (2017)
If you love the book, prepare for somewhat of a disappointment.
The amount of time I waited to finally see this movie! Loved the book and was really hoping I'd love the movie as much (foolish, I know), which obviously didn't happen, hence only 6/10. Not sure what I'm about to say counts as spoilers, but hey, better safe than sorry! It really felt like it was lacking something. Quite a few things that I really wanted to see depicted on the screen were left out. I understand that they obviously couldn't add everything as the movie would have been hours long, but in my opinion they made wrong choices when choosing what to keep and what not. Everything felt so hurried. I can't even imagine what impression this movie leaves for people who haven't read the book. It must leave so many questions, right!? One main thing that really struck me was how they didn't explain or develop the teacher/student "relationship" at all. Some serious stuff went on in the book which, to me, seemed damn important. Anywho, if you're a reader such as myself, I'd really recommend the book. Might explain some things.
The Imitation Game (2014)
Quite the thought-provoking film, I must say.
My review and thus my vote is obviously influenced by the fact that I simply adore Mr. Cumberbatch, but nonetheless, this movie is a must see. I had my doubts about it simply because I am not a fan of history as a theme as such, but I was incredibly surprised how much I enjoyed watching this. Benedict, as always, is amazing - a stellar performance by him is rather usual, and in this case definitely worth the Oscar nomination.
As for the subject matter, I find it saddening that Alan Turing was not acknowledged and rewarded for all of his achievements just because of the way he was. Such a shame.
