Cold Pursuit (2019)
So many positives reviews, we clearly didn't watch the same movie.
Liam Neeson spends 1hr 45mins avenging his son that dies in the first 10 minutes, whom he shares not a single scene or piece of dialogue with?! Doomed before I've even got stuck into the M&M's.
So he effectively takes a Walter White style transformation in the next quarter of an hour, from regular quiet townsperson to total badass. Spending the remainder of the movie offing gangsters and sneakily turning rival criminal outfits against eachother. Its attempting to be a Tarentino style quirky shootemup, but it's just a messy bore.
I mean, the main 'Villain' is some overacting Roger Federer looking dude, whose hitting us with a poor Heath Ledger Joker voice.
Best avoided, forever.
Glass (2019)
Enjoyable, without being blown away
Just came out of an advanced screen (UK) this evening and as in the header, I enjoyed it without being totally blown away at any stage.
Slightly disappointed nearly the entire film is played out In the grounds of the nut house & Bruce Willis is most certainly warming the subs bench for the majority. Very unfortunate given the importance of David Dunn to this series & the class that Brucey boy can bring to the screen.
Also, a special nod to Sarah Poulson, as in everything she's ever taken on, handing out a very good showing once again.
Many of the loony bin scenes throughout (Especially those involving Glass himself) could have either been left on the cutting room floor, or taken down by a good few minutes. Too many times scenes are dragged out as a tension build without actually much of a pay off (if at all)
But still, McAvoy is once again superb and that is some shape he's built himself into! The flipping in & out of each personality is an absolute joy to witness, the guy is quality.
The ending seems to be gaining a mixed reception but I personally enjoyed the twist and 'big' reveal in the closing moments. It signed it off nicely.
Bohemian Rhapsody (2018)
Fluffy tribute that played it safe
I was neither here nor there heading into this one earlier tonight. Not being a massive fan of the band itself, I wasn't fussed on being treated to 2hrs 15mins of all the hits, but desperately hoping for a deep look into Freddie Mercury's world that we might not have seen before, all of his off stage antics & issues that inevitably caused the break up of Queen.
Alas it didnt really turn out that way, this isnt to say that Rami Malek didn't do a great job as the energetic front man, he does. A quite brilliant job in fact. It just seems like they merely glided over the deeper issues at hand & skipped by them as quickly as they could. Zero risks taken, when it probably could have been so much more. With a 12A rating in the UK I probably shouldn't be surprised.
I've since learned that Brian May & Roger Taylor were responsible for Sacha Baron Cohen not getting the Freddie gig as he wanted to go deeper/darker & focus solely on Mercury and less so the band itself. Going in this direction would've grabbed me 10x as much, but that's just personal preference.
As well as Malek's excellent performance, the tracks are all there sounding absolutely superb through the big screen & the visuals for old Wembley at Live Aid were stunning!
Although I do feel said performance was way over cooked in the finale, running 10mins longer than it should have. A good portion of time that couldve been utilised elsewhere.
This was a decent enough movie for Queen fans all over, but still remains the feel good tribute movie that the 3 surviving members will be delighted with. A missed opportunity IMO.
The Nun (2018)
Yawnfest....
Not a bad first 20mins to set things up but it goes down hill rapidly, culminating in a really really terrible movie. Horror? Zero jump scares, loud noises that are supposed to bring the fear and The Nun barely features?
Wooden acting, horrible storyline, random scenes that don't link & leave you thinking "what was the point in that?"
We weren't the only ones walking out muttering "that was shit". Best avoided, save your money. An insult to the Horror genre.
The Festival (2018)
Avoid at all costs
Saw this one at my local cinema this evening, not expecting a great deal from one of the head honcho's behind the flawless Inbetweeners & arguably the weakest of the 4 main cast. But I gave it a go regardless and my fears were realised almost immediately.
I knew I was going to hate this movie from the get go, with the opening 60 seconds ripping off THAT scene where Will McKenzie finally gets to bed Charlotte. Terrible start, seen it all before, it was only funny the first time.
From here on Its forced gag after forced gag, leaving excruciatingly awkward moments after the jokes fall flat, knowing full well those churning out the lines are regretting putting pen to paper on a contract. The acting for the first half of the movie from the relative unknowns is at best, abysmal. Poor Joe Thomas churning out a performance which is EXACTLY that of 'Simon', it's hard to see how he will ever do anything else. Seemingly destined to be typecast forever, never shaking the Inbetweener tag.
Anyway I'd had enough after he crawled through the crowd & got pissed on. I walked out after barely 40mins. The first time I have ever done this in my life.
A painfully unfunny movie, from what looks like a script that was dragged from the bin under the title Inbetweeners 3. Can't wait to read others reviews after the coming weeks, if this film doesn't bomb & sit in the £5 and under bin at your local Tesco's by Christmas I'll be shocked.
Avoid this disaster, save your cash.
Suburbicon (2017)
What the hell happened?!
I saw this movie tonight on an advanced screening, for 'Unlimited Card Members' only and having seen the trailer prior to a number of films the last few weeks, I was right up for it.
That's where the disappointment kicks in. The trailer looked sharp, slick & It seemed a dark thriller that was in the offing. Oh how wrong I was.
OK so it started well, home invasion akin to 'law abiding citizen' where some bad crap happens and a family is left torn apart/devastated etc...the next 90mins dragged its heels so badly with predictable scenes at every turn, everything moving at a snails pace and the most bizarre side story concerning the new neighbours next door?!
I don't recall seeing any reference to them in the trailer (other than a quick glance at the rioting mob) but honestly what the hell was that? Other than the two young lads becoming mates, did I miss something? I must have.
A positive at least was Julianne Moore who gives another decent showing, following on from her appearance as the Kingsmen main adversary. Matt Damon I found to be wooden and boring, pretty much wanted him offed after the first half hour!
Anyway, I left the screen badly wanting to like this movie, but it just doesn't ever get going & seems to not even know what it wants to be. It's all over the place for the most part, my saving grace was this was a freebie on my 'Unlimited' membership. Thank Christ.
