Skinless (2013)
Really good for a low budget film.
Kind of grotty effects, but what can expect from a flick that has been called a cross between The Fly and The Incredible Melting Man. The characters are believable and the acting is excellent. Itchy was a bit off the wall. The worst thing about it is that someone with Peter's deformation would not speak so well. Anyhow; no closer to spoiler will I go. If you liked The Fly you'll like this.
Boku no kanojo wa saibôgu (2008)
I can't believe it!
Someone wrote a perfect science fiction story and made a movie of it in 2008 and it took 12 years to find me. I wish someone would do the same with Robert A. Heinlein's better stories. The world needs this. Thank you.
The Expanse (2015)
As the Worlds Turn
I watched nearly all of season one of The Expanse. It is a daytime soap opera set in space. Technically it is well done, but it drags and drags and too much of the dialog is in gibberish. I doubt that I'll ever revisit it.
Birds of Prey and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn (2020)
Just not firing on all cylinders.
It was off somehow. A good part because of the direction.. I think and a lot because there was just something missing in the female lead. I would have boldly stolen the soundtrack from Kill Bill and at least made it sound interesting. Oh well; it killed some plague time.
Bloodshot (2020)
Good Movie, but 1 major oops.
To start with; Vin is one of my favourite actors and he did a superb job. I watched it thinking, "Make this into a series and it'll blow Van Damme's Universal Soldier series out of the water." That being said: there is one major oops that someone should have caught before the movie was released. Flour, when suspended in the air makes a major explosion. In the tunnel scene the first spark or shot should have ignited the flour and totally vapourised everything in the tunnel while blowing it out both ends.
Primeval (2007)
I don't know them.
After five seasons of a series one should know the characters well, but there was a sad lack of character development in this one. Most of it was done right and the writing was mostly OK except for character development. I thought Ruth Bradley showed some real talent for acting and if they ever make a documentary about the group Blondie; Hannah Spearritt would make a lovely Debbie Harry. Ben Miller did a good job and Alexander Siddig did an excellent job. Still though, with the sad lack of character development I only give it a B-. I find a lot of Brit shows show this lack.
Ex Machina (2014)
So Good, But
I really liked this movie right up to the ending it didn't have. The two lead male actors were not well written. It seemed they were written by a 12 year old who didn't understand adult motivation. Under the circumstances the actors did fairly well with them. Alicia Vikander stole the show and of that there is no doubt. From the first glimpse I wanted to take her home. The camera work etc. wasgreat. I would give it an eight right up to the ending; which neverhappened. Again; the writing style was what was lacking. It was more like a comic book than anything else. It just fizzled at the end. Someone needs to read their notes on classic writing styles. The last two stages are missing; 4. Closure
Once the climax has been reached and the problem resolved, it's time for the characters to tie up loose ends and bring closure where needed. Known as falling action, examples can include rounding up the cattle after the big stampede; reuniting a man with his long-lost brother; or getting the injured child into the raft and riding the rapids to safety.
5. Conclusion
The wrap-up of a story is known as the dénouement (day-noo-mon'). By this part of the story, everything has been resolved and the reader has closure. We see how the characters have changed over time, or how life returns to normal. For example, the bully learns the errors of his ways; the family home is rebuilt after a devastating fire; or wedding bells ring for a couple who have overcome many obstacles and found true love.
I find a lot of recent movies suffer from this same problem. Read some stories before you write any please.
The Last Survivors (2014)
Boring and Pointless
This movie has one of the most lame plots that I have ever seen. People are living in a valley somewhere where it hasn't rained in four years and some nuts thinks it is his valley so he is killing everyone. There is no hint to explain why it hasn't rained in four years, why the people don't just leave the valley or where the government services went. The acting is neither good nor bad; there just isn't much of an opportunity to really act. The scenery is desolate and the buildings are pretty much just ratty abandoned shacks. The camera work and technical stuff is good, but just a waste of time. Hopefully we'll see those involved show up in a more interesting plot somewhere down the line.
Hellraiser: Revelations (2011)
It brought the series back to its roots.
After dragging the franchise everywhere on Earth and even off it for one flick Revelations brought the series back to its roots and reminds me of the first two, but with better acting over all. I didn't like that Doug Bradley didn't play Pinhead, but that was his choice and he missed a good opportunity. If he had been there it would have been perfect.
I'm not sure where the title came from as not much is revealed to us in this film. I have always like in this series that nothing is taboo and this film did not let me down in that. I do hope that Doug gets back on board if they make anymore Hellraiser films. Nobody can do it as well.
