Lucy (2014)
Absolutely mind-blowing. Superior in its own right.
When I left the theater after watching this movie, I felt that I had trouble grasping into reality. I felt at the edge, at the edge of something more. Of everything.
This is the first movie that left something in me in years. After watching the most praised movies of the summer I would always think they were funny and entertaining, but that's all.
Not this one though.
I don't think "Lucy" belongs to any genre at all, and at the same time it has little of all of them. It's not about whether you believe if archiving the ultimate comprehension and control over matter and energy could be possible or not but the moment you understand where the whole movie was headed, when you grasp the meaning and it all slides into place so perfectly...
Lucy is God.
I wonder how many people understood this after watching the film. Lucy is God.
They took all the major theories of creation and evolution, all full of holes in a major or minor state, all with secrets yet to discover or giant flaws that their believers don't know how to explain... And they melted them in one. And somehow it made sense. (I think the one that falls closer is the Gaia theory.)
However, this is a movie that needs to be seen with an open and functioning brain. It leaves a mark on you if you let it sink in, if you listen beyond the mere words that the characters are saying and let their meaning overflow you, think about them and interpret them rather than just listening. Open your mind. That's what all the movie is about, really.
I pity so much all the dumb reviews calling it a "useless movie" and a "careless flick". How bold can all that people be? Can't they see? Can't they feel it? Just open your mind a little bit and the movie will consume you, capture you and you will believe every word, because it will make perfect sense to you. Whether it is sustained scientifically or not, believe.
And when you are done with it it will haunt you, make you question what you already knew and before you can shake it off it will plant seeds of doubt and wonderings of endless possibilities inside you.
Just let it take you away. And you WILL remember it.
Ps: Scarlett is amazing and the visuals are breathtaking.
Rise of the Guardians (2012)
One of the best movies ever
I wanted so see Rise of the Guardians since I saw the trailer two months before the release. Generally when you have so hight expectations about a film at the end it never reaches them. But Rise of the Guardians was magnificent since the beginning to the end.
The characters are endearing, the story line quite original and it's very funny (with jokes that often are aimed for adults more than children) It makes you laugh, cry, and believe in magic.
But the most brilliant is the visual part and the characters design. All the typical mythological characters that we ever imagined were modified to surprise even the most boring of watchers. It changes your perception forever.
However, the most impressive part of the movie is the quality. To see it in the cinema is an experience like any other. The colours are vivid, the textures are almost touchable, and the amount of detail.... you can see every grain of the DreamMaker's sand, every feather and every snowflake.
The best animated film of the decade.
Dragons: Riders of Berk (2012)
Incredible
If there's something that a grown person has to know while watching animation films is that they are mostly aimed to young audience. So they have to show values. How to train your Dragon was a very beautiful movie, but the series are even better. The steal-strong friendship between Toothless and Hiccup is the most beautiful and encouraging thing ever. The different types of people in their group teach about acceptance and respect between companions, or to oneself, everyone has it's strong and weak point. Partial incapability in not an end, friendship can move mountains and change people's hearts. Time is necessary to make a change, bad people will always exist, but they are never rewarded. If I had kids Riders of Berk would be the series I would make them see ever and ever again.
For adults there's also entertainment; The landscapes are precious, the jokes funny and the action moments make you hold your breath. It's light and happy, the perfect series for enlighten your mood and believe in magic again.
