Something to Talk About (1995)
Kyra Sedgwick should have gotten an Oscar.
Good movie about gracious southern life mixed with a lot of behavior that is anything but gracious. The movie couldn't seem to decide between being a drama and a comedy, but is nevertheless more than worth watching because of the character played by Kyra Sedgwick. She has at least 2 or 3 of the greatest lines ever uttered in the movies that will make you absolutely fall out with laughter (unless they offend your delicate sensibilities too much). I loved this movie. It shouldn't be taken as seriously as some seem to want to take it. The title indicates to me that they were really aiming at comedy here, and it some places, they really, really hit it.
The Rack (1956)
Good film, good acting, great theme.
I had never even heard of this film when I caught it on TCM this morning. It is a well acted, well written drama that showcases the early, developing talent of Paul Newman in a very becoming light. Edmund O'Brien and Ann Francis are also particularly engaging, as is the conflicted prosecutor played by Wendell Corey. Probably the highlight of the movie is a fantastic scene between Newman and his father, played by Walter Pigeon. All in all, a very good movie dealing with the trauma of war and the dysfunction of family life. 7 stars may be a little low for this one. It is extremely entertaining and thought provoking.
