The Haunting of Hill House (2018)
Probably as close to a masterpiece as you get
I got to say that I binged this in two sittings, had to work :( As some have said horror is often predictable. This one has a very interesting twist that make everything logic and kind of explainable, and I'd say most will not see that coming. The story, acting, settings, light, music, everything is superb. And I can't for my life understand why I hadn't watched it when it was released, but probably because I didn't like the movies. The thing that I like the most is that it's a one season only with a planed and executed ending that is perfect. All in all, if you like any kind of horror, thriller, suspense etc it's a must watch.
Penny Dreadful: City of Angels (2020)
Wow!
Not sure if I have rated something this low, but I will be short and brutaly honest. I loved the original series, I got all seasons on both DVD and Blue Ray. This is an absolutely huge pile of crap. How the same person that made the first series made this is beyond my understanding. So stay away, and if you have missed the original watch that instead or again.
He Never Died (2015)
Don't really know why it's so great
I have to say that I really, for my life, don't know why this movie are good. I would really put it in the top 3 supernatural movies I've ever seen, if not the top one. The thing is it shouldn't be close to my top 10. It is slow paced, there isn't any great Hollywood effects. You get some of the backstory but really not that much. But on some way it creep up on you and take hold. The acting and casting are superb and as I said no expensive hollywood effects, that combined with the soundtrack make the movie an absolute diamond. When it ends all I could think was, I want more. But in all honesty I think that no matter how they would make a prequel or sequel it would just suck.So if you like movies of the supernatural kind and haven't seen the film I really think you should give it a try.
The Last Witch Hunter (2015)
Not so much about the movie itself
I don't usually write these, but I thought I should give it a go this time. Firstly I really liked it, no more explanation I just did. What I think many critics these days looks at in a film is that it has a message, if it doesn't it's crap. This film don't much have one, well maybe don't be bad. Personally when I watch a movie I tend to do it to have a good time and get away from the mundane everyday life. If I want a deep message I watch the news or a documentary, or a movie that has one. Anyway what I don't get about the movie industry today is that this movie is considered a failure, or something like that, and it made about 20% more than it cost in less than 3 months. How the hell can anyone see that as a failure is beyond me. And it hasn't had it's premiere in China yet, not sure if this is their kind of movie though, and they have about 20% of the worlds population. I think it will earn a little more money than it has when all the premieres have been showed. I think I remembered about the same that is said about Pitch Black when it came, it took a couple of years till that changed I hope it will be the same with this.
Scarecrow (2013)
Why?
For this genre the movie is really good. It has a good cast, and as some have mentioned earlier, the female cast get no complains from me. I agree with other reviews that the CGI are quite good, and you can't really complain on acting in this kind of film it's not why you watch them. There are only a few things I got hung up on. One, the monster don't have any resemblance to a scarecrow. Two, there is not a shred of explanation to the story what so ever. If they had mad any kind of attempt to explain why there was a monster and why it did what it did, I would give it a higher rating. Sadly there is none. But besides that it well worth watching.
Enemies Closer (2013)
One of JCvDs better movies
JCvD is getting better and better the older he gets. But since most reviews already mentioned his part in the movie I'm gonna do a short comment of another things in it. The only thing that is really bothering me about the film, is the shitty fighting skills of the Forest Ranger and ex S.E.A.L. Seriously, even a 3 years ex S.E.A.L and former drunk would have wiped the floor with Clay (angry brother) and most likely all the drug ppl too. A S.E.A.L is trained to master Jujitsu, Muay Thai, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and Krav Maga, so even if some time has passed he should be a hell of a lot better. I got my black belt in Jujitsu about 25 years ago, and I had to quit a few months after. But I still remember most of it, it's like riding a bike. But besides that the movie is worth watching.
The Children (2008)
Wow talk about wasting talent.
OK first I got to say that I absolutely love horror movies, got about 400 on DVD and Blue-ray not sure about VHS. So over to this movie, it's crap. Oh the actors are OK, with what they have to work with, and the children superb. It got good effects and some nice gory scenes, and some nice morally and psychologically good scenes. But the story itself suck. OK the children got sick and evil, but why? There are a few mention of the family relations of the characters, some things are mentioned but not in any way explained. What was so bad about the sisters mother? What happened to the cat? There are to many holes in the story for it to be good in my opinion. But much of what I miss might have been lost in the cutting. The movie has the potential to have been very good though, but as it is not much more than watchable.
Killing Birds (1988)
Quite possibly the worst movie made!
Just watched this movie, and I got to say that this is the worst movie I've ever seen. It's not even so bad that it is funny. I got more information about the story from reading the summary on this page than I got watching the movie. There is no story that make sense if you watch it, and the acting is so bad that I think even my 90 year old grandmother could do it better while sleeping. And it's blasphemy to call this a zombie movie, horribly decayed ghost movie maybe but not zombie. I really hope that Robert Vaughn got a busload of money for being in the movie, no actor/actress with any self interest would be in this without a huge amount of money(quit possibly not even then). Avoid this as you do the plague.
Legend of the Seeker (2008)
Sad but not surprised
As many of the people commenting this series I'm a huge fan of the books, got them all and have read them over and over. As someone mentioned, making a TV-series of a book is hard and rarely follows the story page by page. What makes me sad is that they often, the case with LotS, is that they change small details that they don't have to change.
1. The fact that Khalan brings the book to Richard.
2. The way the boundary was removed, the journey through would have made a very good part of an episode. (this are only 2 of many details)
Many has complained about the actors, from eye and skin color to body mass. Most of that stuff really don't matter to me, as long as the heart and soul of the characters are there. As only the first episode has aired when I write this I think it's to early to tell. But so far the only character I'm really not liking is Richard, and as mentioned in another post I can not in my life see him leading anything but a very small party of people. My 2 big concerns of the show is that each episode will have different directors, that spells disaster. And as many already mentioned it's made for to young a crowd to have any chance what so ever to be anywhere near being true to the books. Still I will give it a 5, it still looks good so far, for being a fantasy series. But as for being a live action version of The Sword of Truth books I give it a 2, and that's being kind. As someone said before. Terry Goodkind you should be ashamed. It saddens me to say, yet another fantasy favorite that has had it's screen potential destroyed.
The Invincible Iron Man (2007)
Not bad at all.
First I must just say that I'm a huge marvel fan, and as such can't for my life understand why they always have to change the original story. I can understand it when it comes to non-animated movies, but not when it's animated. The original Ironman story is quite good, and the beginning is almost the same as in this film. Enough with the criticism and on to what's good about it. Firstly it's beautifully animated and the voice of Tony Stark is as I've always imagined it. The story is a typical marvel story with all the twists and turns, could have been a little more story about the main villain and why he's so feared. If they had used the original story I've probably given it an 8, but as it is this is a better story for those not as in to marvel as I am. All in all it well worth seeing.
BloodRayne (2005)
Crap
OK, what can I say. Can someone please see to it that Uwe Boll never makes a movie again, doesn't matter how just do it. Not only do the man get the rights to computer games that could become extremely good movies, if done by the right people. He also drags good actors into his crappy movies. OK enough about Uwe, and on to my comments of the movie. Basically it sucks big time. The story is almost not existing, OK good vs. evil. And there is a feeling that lots of things happen in front of you without anything really happen. My first thought when the movie ended was. OK, maybe I should go watch a movie been a while since I watched one. The only reason I gave it a 2 is that I like Michael Madsen and that Kristanna Loken is one good looking girl. But not one of those things make a good movie, if you can call this a movie. So if you want my opinion stay away, don't watch it.
Alone in the Dark (2005)
Wow
First of all I need to say I'm a huge fan of the games, that said I will try and give this movie a fair judgment. It sucks, period. It's not the worst movie made, there are a lot worse movies out there. But a film that claims to be based on something, should at lest have something more of the story than some names and that there are monsters. This is actually the first of Uwe's films that I've watched, and I didn't think it could be so bad as people told me. But I stand corrected. The only time I think this might be worth seeing is when you got a huge hangover and it doesn't matter what you really watch, or if you happen to be a fanatic Reid or Slater fan. In which case the movie doesn't matter anyway. The reason I still gave it a 3is that I reserve my 1 for those few movies that makes you sick they where ever made. And my 2 for those that can barely be watched. Besides the bad story, half bad acting and the so so effects you can still watch this movie but not much more. My final comment is, if you liked the games stay away. If you are most other people don't watch it unless you absolutely don't have anything else to do.
