A Hard Day's Night (1964)
A time capsule, a fun ride, and the greatest band in the world!
Such a simple idea for a movie, take the biggest band in the world and film shenanigans for an hour and a half, yet somehow this movie always makes me smile. Paul, Ringo, John, and George all bring something special to smile at.Much like their early music, the film is simple, charming, and tons of fun. It makes you wish you were the long lost "fifth" member of The Beatles and you join in the fun! Yes, the acting is bad, but they're rock stars so I can give it a pass. If you love The Beatles, check it out you won't be disappointed. If you don't like The Beatles, I think it goes without saying to skip it. To conclude, tons of funny stuff and Beatles novelty!
Prime Evil (1988)
You're not going to believe this, but it's not all bad!
Okay yes, it's not good. But if you really give it a fair shot, it had some decent ideas behind it. The motivation for the villains is acceptable, the acting ranges from horrible to surprisingly decent, and the plot isn't half bad believe it or not. I think the disappointing thing about this movie is that it could have been pretty good, not great, but good if in the hands of a capable director.
Is it bad? YES, but it seems to stand out among the other exploitation schlock for some reason (granted it is exploitation schlock). I can't believe I'm writing this, but this movie begs for a remake, in an era where production companies insist on taking good nostalgic horror movies and making them mediocre, they should take a mediocre movie with decent ideas like this and make it, well, good.
If you can find this, check it out, just don't pay to much to see it, and maybe you'll agree with me.
Gekijouban Fairy Tail: Houou no miko (2012)
A fresh, upbeat take on an otherwise repetitive medium. With a fair share of it's flaws
As a youth ,I very much enjoyed anime. Many a night I stayed up late to catch shows such as "Bleach" "Naruto" "Blood+" "Dragon Ball Z (and GT to a lesser extent)". However in the mid to late 2000s, I grew weary of anime. Some of the shows (some being the previously stated) had more than overstayed their welcome and many of the new additions to the anime medium were either more of the same story rehashed with different characters, or downright perverted. On top of that a new wave of "anti heroes" had come into play, not that there's anything wrong with that, I enjoy a good dark hero every once in a while but at that point the medium was plagued by unrelatable and sometimes downright unlikable characters. So naturally I moved on to other story telling mediums to fill the gap that anime had created.
But then, fairly recently, this little story caught my eye on the Funimation channel.I decided, despite my previous experience, to give this one a fair chance, and it surely did not disappoint! The characters are three dimensional and likable, the story (while containing some elements from animes past) was original and interesting. That being said the show is certainly not perfect, suffering from an abundance of clichés that sometimes detract from an otherwise wonderful plot, and the featuring of the occasional villain that you've sworn you've seen at least thirty times before in other shows. But that by no means does a bad anime make, and to the shows credit, the jokes are actually very clever and funny, which due to the cultural barrier that is often difficult to translate in anime, is a rarity.
What makes this a good anime id simply this, you like the characters. You want to see them succeed and you can often relate to the feelings that they have during their struggles. The characters in the Fairy Tail guild look out for each other, you actually believe that they would be friends in any given scenario. The rivalries are believable and the villains (while sometimes cheesy) have sufficient motivation at all times. To conclude, I would recommend this show to current and prior anime fans, there's something in it for everyone.
Species (1995)
Exploitation at it's barest state
Well, I think we can all recall what makes an exploitation film and how it relates to this movie. Gratuitous sex and nudity-check, a plot so simplistic and yet so poorly executed-check, a monster so cheesy that you can't help but giggle at it's presence in what are supposed to be serious scenes-check! When I was viewing this film, I felt as if this was a rejected porno-parody from the 1970's. An alien monster that needs to breed so it goes around and tries to sleep with any guy that she can find. Surprisingly the film boasts an all-star cast. While they no doubt bring some pretty top notch acting, the story cannot be saved. On another note, this movie is a perfect example of how over-dependence on CGI will no doubt make your movie look positively stupid and silly in only a matter of 17 years. There are movies from the 1970s that have more convincing monsters than this one! With that I can only say that the movie is dumb, however if you want a good laugh and go in with the expectation that it's going to be nothing but a cheesy good time, then you may find some joy in this picture.
