Unfrosted (2024)
The funniest movie we've watched in years
I don't understand how people couldn't enjoy this, but then humor is subjective. Maybe the problem is that nostalgia played such a strong role in the movie itself since it was set in 1962-3. But we thought the writing was strong, the casting was perfect, the dialogue was sharp and witty and the comedic timing was excellent. It was all over the top and silly, but in the best of ways. People like Hugh Grant, Christian Slater, Peter Dinklage and others hit just the right notes in walking the comedic line, and scenes like the utterly absurd funeral had us rolling.
We were also floored when we got to the end and realized that this managed to be that funny and was for the most part incredibly family friendly.
I hope Seinfeld does more films. I have to be honest and say I never watched his show except once or twice because I didn't enjoy it. This movie though was one I'll be watching again.
Shôgun (2024)
Game of Thrones all over, and not in a good way
I went into this show so hopeful, and watched as the writers of this miniseries slowly decided that they could write a better story than Clavell, just like GoT. It got worse until the travesty of an episode 9 where they made ridiculous choices about Mariko and Blackthorn that destroyed the meaning behind their storylines. I'm disgusted with what they did, and I plan to watch the old version to get the bad taste out of my mouth.
Oh, and that lead actor? What a horrible, wooden face. He had no acting ability and acted like an imbecile rather than the educated man Blackthorn was in the book. Really, he couldn't speak decent Japanese until the end of the story? The show runner should admit that they didn't give a damn about his character.
I give this plus one star for the Japanese actors who were stellar.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
It's part 1 of a 2-parter
This ends on a cliffhanger and they didn't advertise this as a part 1. That really annoyed me. It makes me not go to see the next part, because who knows if they'll do the same thing? I wouldn't be surprised if they string people along for a good 8 or 9 movies. The movie itself was the first movie x 10. I think they thought that if it was cool and worked in the first movie then they should put 10 times more of it in the second movie. It doesn't work that way, not for me. It was too full of "cool" things and didn't do enough to add depth and story. I didn't have to see 9000 Spider-people. I would have been happy with the ones from the first movie. Though Hobie was fun.
They lied by omission. I'm angry about it. I'm not going to see the next one.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Subspace Rhapsody (2023)
Completely Cringeworthy
Why do TV shows think we need to hear people who are normally in dramas sing terrible songs. Because that's what we have here. The music is not good; it is in fact music that would get you kicked so far off Broadway you'd never find your way back. The singing is mostly mediocre with a heavy use of autotune. Half the actors look incredibly uncomfortable doing this. So why? Who is enjoying themselves in this? It certainly wasn't this fan.
Look, I enjoy musicals. I love this Star Trek. But they don't go together. Not the way they were put together here, and it made me cringe every step of the way.
I'm going to mentally stick this episode next to the one with Janeway Lizard and Highlander Crusher and that horrible evolution TNG and never watch it again. Season 2 is now the 9-episode season for me.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Under the Cloak of War (2023)
One of the best
Star Trek has shown us our best faces in many circumstances, but it rarely shows us our face in war and its aftermath with the honesty of this episode. It was heart-wrenching, and like all great Trek made me question everything about what I thought I understood, and the kinds of decisions required in the face of such situations. What do we have to become in order to survive war? Can we ever recover? Do we deserve forgiveness for the worst of it?
We all think we know the answers. Star Trek often gives us the answers we want to hear. Are they even realistic? Can we reach those heights? I like to think we will always try. But damn, it can be hard, maybe too hard for even the best of us. 10/10.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Those Old Scientists (2023)
Reduced to using gimmicks
Normally it's only badly aging shows losing viewers that resort to gimmicky crossovers and musical episodes. But now we get them in season 2 of an otherwise excellent season of Strange New Worlds.
This wasn't the worst episode they've done. That storybook one wins that contest. But there was no point to this except to maybe gain viewers for the animated show. In that they failed with this fan, because those two characters were so obnoxious that I never want to see them again.
The only positive was the scene with Chapel, because it gave her a reason to eventually break off with Spock.
And I guess, since they got it out of their system now we won't ever have to go through it again. I hope. Now we only have to face the gimmick of a musical episode, then they can stop copying Buffy. And the Flash. And Scrubs. And Xena...
The Curse of Bridge Hollow (2022)
Cute, funny, family movie for Halloween
This was adorable and had some genuine laugh out loud moments courtesy of Marlon Wayans and also some vegan baked goods. It's not very scary; honestly it's about as scary as something like The Ghost and Mr. Chicken or Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein. Remember those? This could be Disney.
As far as acting goes, everyone did a great job with what they were given. I especially liked Priah Ferguson who plays my favorite character on Stranger Things. She plays a take no prisoners young woman and had a good time doing it, which made it all the more entertaining to watch. I really enjoyed John Michael Higgins as the principal too. He has a way of inhabiting a role like it's old clothes, so it feels completely natural on him even when it's as silly and fun as this one. And of course Marlon Wayans always makes the screen sparkle when he's on it. (Why isn't he listed with the main cast IMDB?)
I sincerely hope they do a Christmas special.
The Orville: Twice in a Lifetime (2022)
Good episode, terrible resolution
Once Gordon had a family and the timeline was changed, anyone changing it would be murderers. Ed was responsible for untold deaths because he placed himself and his way of life first. It's how mankind has been throughout history, thinking the universe revolves around them. People will look back on this story, if it's remembered, with the disgust with which we view old books containing racism.
Tokyo Vice (2022)
Crap storylines based upon crap journalism by a crap writer
The show isn't bad but don't let yourself believe ANY of it. No one working with this guy had any respect for him because he was a self aggrandizing exaggerator (to put it politely) of massive proportions. As fiction this is mildly entertaining, if you can stomach the thought of him getting fame and royalties for his Walter Mitty fantasies.
Star Trek: Picard: Monsters (2022)
Not even James Callis could save it
I love James Callis. Every scene he appears in is uplifted. But when something is as mired in the swamps of bad writing as this episode was, sometimes uplifting doesn't even bring it to the surface. This episode felt like it was written by seven different people isolated in seven different corners of the world so they never communicated with each other. One of them was a thirteen-year-old fan fiction writer and she was given the unenviable job of writing about Picard's secret past. Yes, the story is that bad.
I'm going to watch the last three episodes because the only direction this show can go right now is up. This had to be the nadir of the season, right? Right?
The Man from Earth (2007)
Unoriginal, cliched, terribly acted and facile waste of time
Anyone who thinks this is fascinating has never read a decent SF novel. This is shlock for the uneducated. It gets a star for Tony Todd, the only actor in it who can act.
Enterprise: In a Mirror, Darkly, Part II (2005)
The worst acting of the series
Someone evidently told the actors that everyone in the dark universe wore exaggerated grimaces and sneers and growls, because with the exception of T'Pol, whose actress bumbled her way around clueless about how to deal with the concept, and Phlox, who was deliciously menacing, scenery was chewed and spit out with gusto. It was painful to watch, especially Archer, who looked particularly constipated, as if he had a ghost of an idea he wanted to evoke but fruitlessly strained to get it out there.
Aside from that, the fact that such a back stabbing organization could never survive made the whole thing was a pointless exercise.
That said, it was incredibly cool seeing the old ship and uniforms again, and hearing the musical effects of the old bridge. So for that, 5 stars.
