Hereditary (2018)
Severly overrated
Calling this the best horror movie since the Exorcist and similar ridiculously high praise is wrong so so wrong.
Most of the movie is great, amazing even and with some fantastic scares that can easily leave you with nightmares for months, if it wasn't for the ending! The ending ruins the entire movie, it's just a cheap, overused (lately at least) cliche. If it had all just ended differently and the twist had been different this could easily have been the creepiest and best horror movie in decades!
It's such a shame that the great acting from Toni Collette and Milly Shapiro were wasted on a cop out ending. Since I want to write a spoiler free review I will not explain the ending. But it twist the entire story in a really bad way and make the previous scares a lot less creepy. Suddenly cheap jumpscares are introduced rather than the first suspenseful psychological scares from earlier in the film.
To sum it up; stylish, well acted, great scares at first before it descends straight down to hell and not in a good way.
The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
Possible future classic
I honestly don't know where the bad reviews are coming from. Haters gonna hate I suppose but this movie deserve praise. Perhaps slightly overrated but without doubt a good watch.
This is not supposed to be one of those movies that are meant to send you screaming while watching it, so don't expect it.
There are a few predictable moments but the plot was not predictable, at least I did not find it that way. I watch an insane amount of horror and this was one of those that actually gave me goose bumps. This is a movie that stays with you and makes you paranoid, not only for the claustrophobic moments but it makes you wonder if life and death is as easy as we make it out to be.
A friend of mine recommended me to see this and even after her praise along with the reviews I read prior to watching, I was not disappointed. What drags down my rating is I would like to see more! I want a sequel or a prequel to dig deeper into this story and expand it.
I think this has the potential to become a classic in the horror genre, a breath of fresh air after all the found footage horror lately.
The Darkness (2016)
Had potential and went down the drain
This movie is all over the place. The idea is really good and as I said to a friend I would love to get a chance to rewrite this. The original idea and the story line in itself is a new take on a classic idea, which is one of the things I like. Unfortunately it felt like they wanted to put so much in the movie in such little time it just became fractions of a great idea. In a way it almost felt like pieces of several different movies put into one. A drama, a family trip, a horror and a psychological film all in one.
I wish they had spent more time on the story than trying to be scary. If this had been half an hour longer, making it a two hour movie and went down the trail of psychological thriller/horror it could have been a really good movie. Instead it seemed like they were shooting for a one and a half scare fest which ended up falling flat.
The acting is decent as well, David Mazouz has a real chance at becoming one of the greats in Hollywood. So much talent in such a young boy and I think it's a shame his character was a bit pushed aside to give more screen time to the bigger names. Focusing more on him could have possibly turned this movie around.
In conclusion a decent watch if you're okay with plot holes and unfinished story lines.
A Girl Like Her (2015)
An emotional ride
It's nice to see someone actually deal with this issue that is often swept aside and not dealt with. As a person that spent nearly half of their school years being bullied I know what it feels like to question everything about yourself and this hit close to home. From the stand point of the victim it's a very good portrayal, both writing wise and acting wise.
I have to say it's also very refreshing to see both sides of the story, most of the previous movies I have seen on the subject tends to be one-sided and often unrealistic. This is what life looks like for many teenagers all over the world and I am so glad someone had the guts to deal with the subject and show the world what is happening behind closed doors.
The thing that drags down the score a bit for me is the documentary style filming. It doesn't really draw you in from the start and you have to actually give the movie a chance to get started. However it is definitely a good educational movie that I would recommend, and as the title says an emotional ride. At least if you have somehow been involved in similar situations.
Nightcrawler (2014)
Cinematically beautiful but overrated
This is a movie I've been waiting for. Reading the story, seeing the trailer hearing people talk about it caused this movie to go straight to my watchlist. Now after seeing it I am so freaking disappointed, I'm not sure if it's the extreme hype that is about it or if it has to do with it actually not being that good.
Cinematically this movie is absolutely beautiful there is no denying that. But that is about the only positive thing I can say about this title. The acting is boring but decent, Jake Gyllenhaal is not a favorite, but he has done some really good acting, such as Detective Loki in Prisoners or Donnie Darko in Donnie Darko. It might just be me finding the character he plays annoying and that makes me feel like his acting is not as good as it can be, or maybe it is just that I don't really like him. Either way I would not say it's among his better parts.
Then there is the storyline. This is the thing that really ruins the movie for me. It sounds like a great story and it starts out pretty well I guess but it gets so boring and predictable.
It's really a shame that a movie that is so cinematically beautiful has to go to waste because of a bad storyline.
