Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
The American with license to kill
When I watched the new Tom Cruise film and saw the scene of the Fiat Cinquecento chasing down the stairs of Rome, the scenes of the rally of three Mini Coopers in the movie The Italian Job (1969) came to my mind. It is clear that in terms of special effects there is no comparison. Now everything is much more technological and dazzling.
But back to the movie itself. Tom Cruise should be awarded at least an Oscar for his lifetime of work. He is the only actor today who can actually be considered a Blockbuster, as he has two films (in 2022/23) that are almost perfect. He is the lead actor and producer of Top Gun last year and now we have the new version of the Mission: Impossible franchise, where he also serves as the protagonist and producer.
Of course, there will be more successful films in 2023, such as Barbie and Oppenheimer, but nothing compares to the strength of a Superstar like Tom Cruise who fills the movie screen with tension and charisma. And that he feels in raw flesh the emotions of the most dangerous scenes, replacing and surpassing any stuntman (far from a Harrison Ford who can't even walk properly in the last Indiana Jones).
Mission: Impossible Dead Reckoning is a capital F movie. And I'm already looking forward to the second part to find out how our dear Mr. Hunt will manage to defeat the tenebrous Entity. This time, there are no mafia organizations, military rebels with access to nuclear warheads or psychopathic villains who want to destroy inferior races - none of that.
The Entity is a modern villain, so modern that it is made of pure AI. An AI that feeds back byself and threatens the power and hegemony of world powers.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel: The Princess and the Plea (2023)
Legendary!
Perhaps the best episode since the late pilot in the first season. Seeing a discussion between sixty-year-olds, around the dinner table washed down with wine, is a unique gem, such is the richness and sincerity of the dialogues. They are concerns, doubts, fears, insecurities around the moment lived and the future (remembering that we are in the 60s and about to witness the madness of May 68).
One of the best series of recent years. Not only for bringing up the rise of a housewife in the mid-1950s, but also for touching on female empowerment. Sad Abe who, at the same dinner table, assumes he has not paid due attention to Midge and who belatedly recognizes the willpower, capacity and talent of his youngest daughter.
Air (2023)
"You are remembered for the rules you break."
Wise words that to should taken very seriously (Phil Knight/Douglas MacArthur). But the film - despite the subtitle - is not about the history of the logo. Far beyond that, it's the story of how the legendary contract between Michael Jordan and Nike was signed. And that's where Sonny Vaccaro comes in. If it weren't for his passion and vision none of this would have happened. He went after a dream and risking everything (including the company's financial health) achieved a feat in terms of sports marketing. Because if Nike spent 250 thousand dollars and paid for the first time share of sales of Air Jordan- the financial return was astronomical.
We are often discouraged not to run (no false pun) in pursuit of our dreams and goals. It is logical that the vast majority of dreamers will stay halfway there. And it's no use coming up with the meritocracy speech, I mean, only those who deserve it get what they want. Of course. Often what really counts is being in the right place, at the right time and with the right person. In other words, luck is a key factor and it has been proven. So, in short, don't feel bad for not having achieved everything you wanted in your youth or if you still haven't gotten a financial return for hours of effort and dedication. Not everything pays off. And here I remember an Italian film that made a remake of an American film (funny, but that happens too). The name of the movie is Still Time (Já Era Hora - Netflix).
And however namby-pamby the Italian film may seem, it is worth appreciating it calmly. Again, not everything makes up for years and years of sacrifice on behalf of an organization, if in the end what is most precious is forgotten (family and pets). Remembering that if the company wants to fire you for various reasons - twenty, thirty years or even more of dedication will not be taken into account (see the recent cases of TV Globo).
Back to Nike and also to its founder Phil Knight. "You are remembered for the rules you break.": We will be remembered for the rules we break. Not for making rice and beans, not for doing harm to our friends and co-workers. We will be remembered because we broke the rules, were disruptive and went way beyond the quadrate. Let's be honest, with integrity and know how to thank those who helped you in the past. Breaking rules doesn't mean betraying trust or talking bad behind their backs. It means - nothing more, nothing less - being dreamers, having a vision and mission in life. And knowing how to fight for all this even if the bureaucracy and intransigence of mediocre bosses say or try the opposite.
Daisy Jones & the Six (2023)
An afternoon session for the US conservative audience.
Absurdly conventional. A film that portrays the birth of a rock band (loosely based on the trajectory of Fleetwood Mac) needs to be much bolder, less straight and predictable. A feather.
But what to expect from a product made for the extremely conservative US market? It's not that it's a totally bad series. No. The clothing, the music, the casting - everything fits together, but that creative spark of wanting to break the mold and make art with a capital A is missing.
Now, once again, the male actors of a movie or series made in the USA - even after such a drunk - wake up looking handsome and clean-shaven. Entertainment miracles.
