Genocide of the Armenians

More than one million Armenians were slaughtered by the Ottoman Turks from 1915 to 1921. Turkey has always denied that this ever happened. This fine movie was inundated with phoney reviews procured by the Turkish Government. The result was a box-office disaster for the movie. Well worth watching.

See You Up There (2017)

One of the greatest films ever made

I wish I could give it 50 STARS. In my over 70 years of watching movies, this is probably the best of tens of thousands. The sheer enjoyment I felt watching propelled me to buy the book; the book is in a superb English translation and just marvelous.

This is a very fine film with a well constructed plot with believable characters. As I am a determined reactionary, I can see that the anarchic "American" culture of drugs, violence, hip-hop and rap of youth has spread into once highly conservative Slovakia, a shame really. Advocates of Lex Talonis will be held spellbound.

It's an insult to all those noble women who wisely breast-feed to have the comment, " This isn't Africa" when schmuck #1 sees his wife breast-feeding twins. I'm quite disappointed with Toni Collett for appearing in this totally unfunny movie. Does anyone need to know about the Foursome's sex life in all in perversion. It was a miracle I didn't lose my dinner having to look at that obese mountain of lard. When the actress playing Melissa dies, there will panic on the Tallow Futures Market.

I'm quite amazed at how many people think this an excellent movie; it is not. Those reviewers suffer from the "Homer Simpson Effect"; namely, people have been dumbed down to the point of idiocy. This is supposed to be a comedy? What was remotely funny in this one-joke movie?. It is a poor send-up of Jacque Cousteau. The name of the boat here is Belafonte: Belafonte sang Calypso songs; Calypso was the name of Cousteau's ship. Ha, ha, very funny.

An insult to one's intelligence

Oberscharfuehrer Bruno Kttel, as the rank would suggest, was a member of the SS....then why is he wearing a Wehrmacht hat and uniform? And this is only the beginning of this fiasco of a movie. Can anyone who knows anything about the period imagine an SS officer and his cronies, both German and Lithuanian, holding what seems to be drinkee-winkies with Jews? Oskar Schindler spent a few days in jail because he gave an avuncular kiss to a Jewish woman. In regard to physical relations between "Aryans" and Jews, called Rassenschande (Race Shame), Kittel and cohorts would have face imprisonment or worse for what's whimsically portrayed in this film. Kittel may have played the saxophone but it was on the local radio station and not wish Jewish musicians and comedians.

If there was ever a movie that deserved a "0", it's this one.

Madam Kitty (1976)

Truly Dreadful

This is the sort of exploitation movie that will please Neo-Nazis and Holocaust Deniers in that it trivializes the Nazis and their crimes. Take away the vulgarity, the full frontal nudity, and the cartoonish Nazis, and you're left with nothing. The makers of the movie know nothing of the history involved, not that they care. For one thing, German Jews did not wear the Star of David " Jew Badge" until September, 1941, but there is a Jewish family at the start of the movie, sometime before 1 September, 1939 wearing them.

This is a movie best avoided.

Entrusted (2003 TV Movie)

There are two previous negative reviews of this movie, but they suffer from the problem of reviewers whose first language is not English. It's hard to know where to begin in describing the basic silliness of this dog roll. Now, just how did this lantern -jawed hero manage to land in Marseilles during war time, and even if possible, where did he get his plane from, permission, visa, etc.? And are we to believe that this wooden hero/playboy was also fluent in French and German. And how did Frau von Gall manage to phone NYC during the German occupation with Germany at with the USA? And the scenes of French refugees on the move after the Germans occupied the Free Zone (Vichy) is sheer fantasy. This happened in 1940, not 1942.

The contradictory behavior of Austria's foremost actor was truly startling and basically moronic. The ending with the hearts & flower music, tugging at the heart strings of the audience was nothing less than vomitive.

Birdsong (2012)

Great on War, Swinish on Honour

Earlier reviewers have covered most salient aspects of the movie. As a movie showing the cruelty of a most pointless war (that the UK & Empire should have stayed out of!), I would happily give it a 10, but there is no getting past the disgraceful, caddish behaviour of Stephen who was a guest in a home, where the host was most welcoming and foolishly trusting. The man has no honour. I need not say a word about the whore of a wife. What I do not understand is why the husband did not cripple Stephen for this outrage.

I was amused about an earlier critique who seems to believe that oral sex is something new. He needs to visit the erotic temples of Khajurao, India to see the act carved in stone repeatedly.

Small Town Folk (2007)

A great movie under vicious attack

I'm glad some reviewers saw the merit of this spoof of slasher movies. I suppose those who put down this obscure gem are the same sorts who think THE ARTIST the cat's whiskers and meow.

The whole style, plot, and characters are very original and memorable. I know my movies and know that the fairest way to judge a movie is on a genre basis, and in this movie's genre, it's top drawer.

That it was made on a shoestring and over a four year period is a credit to all involved. I bet they had fun making it.

I won't repeat the plot, as others have already done this. Hire or buy the movie to find out its merits for yourself

The Artist (I) (2011)

A great movie for the great unwashed

I started to watch this piece of dog-roll while on a flight into Singapore and got past only 10 minutes into it and gave up in disgust. I just knew it would be a travesty on silent film and wasn't disappointed. In Vietnam I bought a pirated copy for 50c so that my wife and I could see it together at home. How could such an abortion of a film manage to fool the masses into believing it great? Maybe it was the dog? and the two points I gave it was for the dog.

Why was there no speaking parts even when in the "reality" of off-stage? Why was the hero so obsessed with noise, sound, etc. Could it be he was as deaf as the aged Beethoven? Could it be that the stars' French accents would have given the game away? No sound, hardly any music make for a dull, irrating waste of one hour, forty minutes....except for the antics of the dog.

If this is supposed to be a homage to a largely forgotten era, then it was the duty of the producers and director and stars to know something about the Silent Era (which was anything but silent). By 1929, the writing was on the wall for silents. The last of the great studios, MGM, went sound that year. The hero had to be more than deaf, to be dumb enough to try making a silent in 1930.

Peppy's critique of silents, when interviewed in a restaurant, is wrong from start to finish, especially the comment about "mugging". If there were space enough, I could list a hundred silent films with superb acting. Have a look at Lillian Gish in the "Wind" or the whole cast in the German film "Asphalt".

The vulgar command "Listen up" is contemporary but is used in the film. I'll stop here and merely say that if this film encourages more to view and appreciate films, shorts, cartoons of the Silent Era then it was worth my sacrifice of fifty cents.

Kudos to the dog.

Hemingway & Gellhorn (2012 TV Movie)

A consistently dreadful movie

A previous reviewer said the movie was historically accurate; not so, I fear. One would think "AY CARMELA" was only song the Republicans had during the Spanish Civil War (had the producers never heard of "NO PASARAN!"?, and the version of this song played ad nauseam in the film was not in existence in '36 when the movie begins.

And then there's the whole cartoonish nonsense of the couple's meeting for tea (and chocolate!) with the Chiang Kai Sheks (portrayed in the sort of Leftist propaganda style we've become accustomed to) and then a heart-to-heart meeting with Zhou en-lai (naturally portrayed as a "nice, sincere guy") via some Communist underground hocus pocus. There is no evidence any of this took place.

One wonders if the second Mrs. Hemingway was hypocritical enough to play the "good Catholic" when she herself had committed adultery with Hemingway when he was still married to wife number one, one of her friends.

But I am glad to have seen Hemingway portrayed as he was: a bully, egotist, and swine to women in particular.

Melancholia (2011)

My own take on this movie

I have a very different take on this excellent movie. To begin with, the character Justine, does not suffer merely with acute depression but rather with manic-depression aka bi-polar disorder. No acutely depressed person could have ever entered into a marriage and wedding of such detail and scale. Rather, what we have here at the time of the wedding and wedding feast, is Justine in the last stages of her manic phase. Her bizarre behavior in keeping the guests waiting, her insistence upon visiting her favorite horse, etc. are in keeping with a manic person, not a depressed one. As the movie progresses, her behavior becomes even more baffling and self-destructive. Like all manic-depressives not on suitable medication, she is oblivious of the feelings and needs of others and is particularly cruel and insensitive to those most helpful and generous towards her. I know all this having had a 9 1/2 year relationship with a manic-depressive, and Justine's behavior was a painful reminder of this tragic relationship. For Justine, death, extinction is the ultimate goal and wish. Given that my observations are correct, I posit that the whole story of the wayward planet "Melancholia" is a figment of her crazed, depressed imagination, for, how else, do we account for John's "out-of-character" end, her sister's irresponsible hysteria, her nephew's old-beyond-his years' stoic acceptance of their fate?

It is my interpretation that makes me enthusiastic about this movie; otherwise, who would give a damn about just one more apocalyptic movie?

Right or wrong, I would be interested to hear the views of others on my take.

In summary, this is an excellent movie with a distinguished cast, brilliantly photographed, and well directed.
