The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
Prequel to LOTR trilogy, the beginning of Bilbo's Tale.
I really had high expectations for this movie, which probably was the problem. It is a great movie, awesome visuals and entertaining dialogue/storyline. Yet, overall when it ended it wasn't epic. I wondered how they managed only to do that much in the 2.5hrs.
Really, LOTR fans will enjoy it no matter what (I did), but I think with all the hype created, expectations got too high and thus we are left craving more...and not in the good way. It does keep the tone of the book well, I thought, and manages a great tie-in (although avid trilogy buffs may notice a discrepancy in some details *hint*).
Worth seeing, splurge for 3D. Just keep in mind you'll not be as blown away as you thought.
Cirque du Soleil: Worlds Away (2012)
A girl chases after The Aerialist after he falls during a circus, and journey's through the many worlds of cirque du soleil's shows
I went and saw this, expecting a Cirque-du-Soleil-esque experience, an interesting plot and amazing performances. This came off as a mash-up of performances, I found myself mostly bored. It is slow, uninteresting, and repetitive and un-amazing. Honestly, if it hadn't been for the plot synopsis given by the behind-the-scenes interview shown before the movie, I would've thought it was a 90 minute advertisement. It had good ideas to work with, I will admit, but it left me wondering if I was missing pieces to a puzzle and searching the internet for a more in-depth synopsis.
It's not a good advertisement, anyway. I wouldn't want to see more after seeing this. I loved cirque du soleil's Alegria and was expecting to be blown away like I was with that. I am going to watch the other film adaptations of other shows rather than this.
Phenomenon (1996)
romantic fantasy-drama film that is neither romantic nor dramatic, with no fantasy.
An obvious propaganda for Travolta's own philosophy (Scientology), with poor acting and minimal character bonds. The emotional ties are unestablished in this movie, and the characters aren't all that likable. The plot takes quite some time to get on the role and when it finally starts it is lackluster at best. I was entirely uninterested, flipping through several games on my laptop as the movie ran. Relationships are preestablished, or entirely jumped into without any actual build up. The mother is a horrible mother at the very least... George is painful on screen. Overall, the only enjoyable part was a 30-second segment. I would not recommend this to anyone, and honestly don't understand how the first three pages of reviews are positive. When the character finally dies, it is like..."so...?". I think there could've been potential with "Man Gains Super Intelligence", but this idiotic small-town lovable dope wasn't the way about it.
