American Horror Stories (2021)
Oh dear
The stories of the episodes could be good, but almost everything about them has been bad. I've seen 3 episodes and all focus on teens, who unfortunately can't act. The cgi used is cheap looking. The dialogue is cheesy and cringy.
If these ideas were done properly they could be really good! But they just haven't, it's as is they're SciFy Channel films that have been given a bit of a bigger budget.
The first two episodes were let down by bad acting and dialogue, but I liked the idea of the rubber suit being found by new tenants. The third episode however feels like a parody of American Horror Story. I just cannot watch more.
Hunt for the Skinwalker (2018)
Slow and annoying.
Just watched over half of this documentary and are having to have a break from how dull it is. Really disappointed as we were looking froward to watching this since it was teased. Most of the documentary so far (just over an hour in) is basically a long trailer explaining things they are going to show you... but then never show you. The wording is long and poetic rather than factual, the testimonies are called evidence when there are no photographs or footage to back it up and while these testimonies are being monotonously read out the on screen footage is of people walking in slow motion or random shots of grass. Annoying camera work with annoying scripts.
So disappointed. There's little else I can say about it. Literally nothing has happened in this documentary.
Into the Woods (2014)
Brilliant film! Funny story filled with morals.
I have come to see this is either a love it or hate it film. I'm unsure why but it just seems to be the way it is (maybe it was die to the MASS amount of songs... more of an opera type affair than a musical). I personally, along with my partner, loved it. It has a great cast, is funny and follows the tales and fables we have all grown to love.
The first hour or so of the film links together fairy tales such as Cinderella and Jack and the Bean Stalk etc and brings the characters to their happy endings. However the rest of the film carries on and shows us that really our dreams aren't really what we want, or need, but instead the in between. We don't need to be in the 'woods' all the time, but wander in and out, taking the exciting with the mundane. It also uses lots of metaphors to tell a tale of how children need to be taught not right from wrong, but to understand different views of others; what is right for one person may be wrong for another; learn from mistakes and hope the next generation takes on what you learnt.
However, I would say I personally would take my child to see it; the fairy tales follow the rather dark side of the stories (especially Red Riding Hood's Wolfs part, although brilliantly acted) but mostly due to the film being a little long.
The songs are catchy, the princes are over the top and over all it is great fun, heart felt and brilliantly and lovingly made.
ParaNorman (2012)
Fantastic film
I really enjoyed this film, the trailer looked funny and light hearted but once the film got a good hour in it was clear it was so much more.
First off I wouldn't personally take a young child below say 9 to see it as it is rather creepy/ scary. The adult jokes arn't an issue, as they wouldn't be understood by anyone young, but simply it is a bit full on for young viewers. HOWEVER, I feel this does need to be said, there is a gay joke in the film, for which some reviewers have dropped it to 2 or 3 stars for. This is outrageous. I would not feel any need to warn anyone within the 21st century that there is a homosexual joke... come on people none of your kids are going to be traumatised by this. My reason for a warning is simply the scary scenes (I'm sure of which most children could deal with anyway).
The animation of the film is brilliant, and it adds a needed unrealistic feel to some of these'full on scenes'. The humour of the film is brilliant, from slap stick for the young viewers to adult jokes and references for the adults watching.
Keeping it short, ParaNorman is a fantastically funny film, with a warm hearted message about being accepted; by yourself more than by others. It touches on some serious issues and obviously, deals with the issue of death, hence the PG rating. I think it would be a shame to miss; good family film, nice messages, great laugh as well as edge of seat action.
