Severance (2022)
A rare show. What a treat!
When Severance is doing its horror/comedy/sci-fi absurdism, the show is brilliant and that's often. It does go into more conventional storytelling sometimes, but even then the directing and acting (terrific ensemble) is so good that it's able to mix the different tones. If there is a Season 2, I hope it can stay in the unconventional, unsettling style that makes it a great show. For the most part, Severance stays true to that core. The sets, camera work, music--everything is very intentional and intelligently crafted to help the story.
And the themes are strong and thought-provoking. Can't wait to be able to talk about this with friends. So much here.
For me, Severance is in the tradition of the Czech writers and playwrights Kafka, Havel, and Kahout, as well as others like Pinter (the scenes between Walken and Tarturo, wow), Beckett, and Ionesco, and it definitely has a lot in common with Gilliam's Brazil. That is great company. What a treat!
Young Frankenstein (1974)
Comic Masterpiece
It doesn't get better than this. Pitch perfect performances all around. The sets, costumes, cinematography, and music recreate the originals this film so brilliantly gives homage to and parodies. There are not a lot of movies where so many scene stealers share equally in the madness they create, yet it's all grounded by the genre. One of the most rewatchable movies ever made. So much fun and love it every time.
