Siu nin Wong Fei Hung chi: Tit ma lau (1993)
Very enjoyable, well done action fest with a few laughs as well.
Now before I start praising this movie I would like to say that although there are a few things in common, Crouching tiger and Iron monkey are very different. OK now to get to the praising. The character "Iron Monkey" is a very cool and heroic character that is very convincing helping all these poor people get the money and shelter that they rightfully deserve. Donnie yen who us Americans most likely only know as "Snowman" from Blade 2 also stars in this great film. The action and fights that everyone is most likely seeing the movie for are everything you would expect from China or Japan (not sure where this is from) The fights are a little far-fetched but movies are not supposed to be realistic and those far-fetched things add to the fun of this very very stylish and entertaining movie. Aside from the action there is a few laughs along the way that again add to the fun of this extraneously cool film. The action is spread out at the beginning but as time presses on it becomes non-stop and it is all good. Now I must say one thing.....Some of the fights kind of get monotonous. Let me say this the repetitive nature of 2 things (kicking objects back and forth at each other and throwing stuff and kicking it before it hits them) would have DOOMED any other film but not Iron Monkey the repetitive moves are not a negative thing since it is still cool and they do kick and throw different objects each time. My Grade:A it is just another example of how China and/or Japan KNOW HOW TO MAKE GREAT MOVIES
Pulp Fiction (1994)
And they said nothing was perfect
Yes that's right this movie is perfect. Every crime drama/comedy out there can try as hard as it wishes but it will never ever surpass Pulp Fiction. Pulp Fiction follows the story of to very likable hit man Vince and Joules (John Travolta and Sam Jackson) and a boxer who is in a lot of trouble (Bruce Willis). There story's are both compelling and original and eventually they run across each other. If you have seen any other Tarentino film you will know how he tells the story with flashbacks and eventually it all comes together. Quinten Tarentino's movies always have a certain amount of character and dialog that make them what they are. Pulp fiction is one of those films which you can't think of anything it lacks. Well I thought may be it could have used more action but if it did it wouldn't be what it is.
So all in all buy this movie right now watch it love it remember it because it will be a long time before someone makes another crime drama/comedy this good. My grade:A+ definitely one of the best movies ever.
Men of War (1994)
Dolf's middle effort
First I would like to say this movies first 45 minuites or so are not very good. If this movie contenued on like that for the entire movie this movie would have got a SOLID D. Then after you are about to push the stop button the film takes a complete 180 and hits you with some of the best action scenes ever captured on film. The fast paceing and great explosions and shoot outs make this a very valuble item in the clearence bin. Guns blaze, boats blow up, people blow up and fry, And Dolf Lundgren fires off some lines that would be famouse if this movie was seen by more people. Does all this mean this is a good movie...no. Let me put it to you this way, if this movie didn't have the great action and story that this has this would be a total loss. My grade: C if you could just get the action scenes A+ P.S. If you see this in the clearence bin get it if you are in the mood for some great action.
AVP: Alien vs. Predator (2004)
Awesome!
Wow I just saw AVP and i have to say it was awesome. It took what we loved about predator and aliens and combined them into one great action-packed movie. First off The aliens and predators have never ever looked better and the face-huggers jumping in slow-mo WOW! I am normally not that enthusiastic about slow mo but in this movie it was used very wisely. AVP also has some really cool references to the other films and it has a lot of stuff You will recognize from the other films (keep in mind this is a prequel). Those of you who have seen this and thought it was just OK (YOU know who you are) you either haven't seen the other movies or enjoy CRAP like XXX and Hidalgo. If you didn't like it at all then well you know what you can do. Anyway o yeah one down point well 2 actually not many of the human characters are cool and some parts in it have some lightly bad acting. But any way it is preety much what I hoped for and a very good summer movie.
My grade:A- yeah
Collateral Damage (2002)
Differant kind of Arnold picture but still as good as his others
This Arnold movie is not a standard Arnold action movie. First off Arnold isn't a one man army and he doesn't go around killing people for no reason. In Colateral Damage he is hunting the terrorist who killed his family as he journeys to many locations interacts with alot of people and avoids the bad guys. I actualy like this enough to say it is one of Arnold's best movies right next to Terminater 2 and Eraser. All the killing is mostly done by other people but don't think that that means that this movie is light on action. Buildings blow up (and so do people) and there is lots of shooting and fighting. I hope if Arnold ever acts again he will make more movies like this.
My grade: A
Thir13en Ghosts (2001)
Odd, somtimes stupid story but very well done
Wow, it has been a long time since I have seen a horror film as entertaining as this one. 13 Ghosts is a haunted house picture bursting with humor and horrific images that kept me entertained all the way threw. Now don't think this is like that awful movie ghost ship...this movie has a big entertainment value and is simply a great horror/comedy. Ghost ship was nether good or funny. Tony shoulob is great in this but the best performance comes from Mathew Lillard. He simply steals the movie with his ability to be funny and dramatic as the situation permits. If you want to see one of the most fun horror movies ever see 13 ghosts. Movies like this you shouldn't see:Ghost Ship and House On Haunted Hill.
My grade:A-
House on Haunted Hill (1999)
I dont know.....
If you have read my review for 13 Ghosts you will see that I listed this under movies not to see but you know now that i think about it this movie was decent. It had good actors and an OK premise. The thing that bogged it down was a bunch of stupid ideas and things done by the people that are so stupid you want to yell at them, but even so... I guess this is an ok horror movie. The movie has some disturbing images in it that might turn a few people away from it but its not that bad. Alot of the movie could have been done better but it could have been done worse. I don't know I guess I just expected more. It is worth checking out but as for me I'll stick with 13 Ghosts.
My grade: C
Hidalgo (2004)
I almost cried
Hidalgo is with out a doubt the worst film of 2004. I didn't almost cry cause it was sad I cried cause I just payed $5 to see this terrible terrible movie. The story line drifts away to much so its never really clear. The action although stylish is very sparse and is rarily something you haven't seen done better. Now to tell you a little story one of my best friends wanted to see this so I went and now I always bring it up when I see a bad movie I say "It wasn't a HIDALGO but it was preety bad." Fans of Viggo Mortansin better not see this or you will loose all respect for him like I did. This movie also takes itself way way way to seriously. It is laughable just how serrious they are. Durring the entire 2 hours you will glance at your watch non-stop hoping it will end . My grade: somewhere between F and D-.
Dawn of the Dead (2004)
Dawn of the freakin' amazing
OK I saw this movie in theaters and I already new it would be good but I walked out of the theater thinking "O my gosh that was the best film I had ever seen. The way the characters interact for example first they all act like complete strangers to each other then as time passes become like a family. As the story goes on the characters learn to deal with the fact that if they go out side they will become someones lunch and so like real people they try to continue life while knowing this. And the action is done in such a realistic manner that the characters seem real. For example some characters who don't use guns in their everyday life have trouble shooting at first then as time passes and they have practice with said guns their shooting skills have gotten better. And for the ones who use guns all the time they also improve on there shooting but start out good already. This film also has funny bits to break the tension and it is very welcome and at times laugh-out-loud funny. If you like the old Dawn Of the Dead or if you like zombie movies or you like action or comedy or a good story this is for you. My grade: A+ its Freakin' awesome.
Extreme Ops (2002)
This could be used to torture people
Okay you would think that a movie that combines snowboarding and terrorists would be at least OK but no. This is by far the worst movie ever. Now I know that is quite a statement but seriously nothing in this film is done right. The action in it is so basic and trying to hard to be cool that it is hard not to laugh or cringe at the horrible way these "stunts" are executed. They also try to make this funny but you end up laughing at them and not with them. Plus this movie is random beyond belief.
***Minor spoiler*** They are at an abandon resort and get attacked by dogs? That is by far one of the stupidest things ever **end of spoilers**
Now i always give at least one good thing about a movie so with this it is hmmmmmmmmmm it causes no physical pain except when you might gouge your eyes out to avoid it. So in conclusion this is an insult to American cinema and a terrible waste of film and Devon Sawa who trys to revive this horrid thing. My grade: F
Dust (2001)
Possibly the worst western of our time
Wow I just finished watching this movie and i must say i am greatly disappointed. To start off this movies plot makes no sense what so ever. It seems to drift off somewhere in the middle. The acting is terrible. It is also to long for what it is I mean come on 2 hours for something that could be told in 80min. I swear, about one hour into this thing i kept looking at the clock hoping it would end soon. This movie also takes place in 2 time periods. In present day and in you know western times, but to tell you the truth the present day stuff is way better than the main western part. Of course all films have there good points and this one is no exception on account of the gunfights are fast and full of energy. But still I recommend everyone if your a fan of westerns or not to avoid this one at all costs. My grade F.
