Diabolik (2021)
Surprisingly solid
Judging by the current rating and having read a few reviews harshly criticizing the direction, writing, casting and acting in this movie, I went in expecting it to be very bad.
Having the bar set this low actually helped me to have a pleasant surprise and frankly quite enjoyable experience. It's definitely not a great movie per se, but rather a competent genre exploration. It has its goofy charm in a very straightforward serious tone, theatrical mannerisms in acting, the way the main plot points are almost always narrated out loud by characters after being shown on screen, it all evokes this cozy feeling of watching a fun exploitation film.
Cinematography is on point, soundtrack is never annoying even though it's not very memorable, and the flow and pacing is quite nice for a 2+ hour long picture. All in all, this is a very solid reboot of a franchise.
The Perfection (2018)
As far from perfection as possible
This title has major flaws in almost every aspect of its production.
All of its problems start with the bad screenplay comprised of a mess of cliche tropes thrown together with no regards to coherence and sense to the story it supposed to tell. Although the main twists aren't something one would expect to happen next, the moment they begin to unravel you can see them through due to their predictability and total lack of attempt to build upon the very basic idea that twist presents.
Character development is a somewhat alien concept to this script so all we get to see is formulaic onedimensional dummies instead of nuanced living human beings. Which apparently hinders artist's performances that despite good enough cast range from unimpressive to the downright unbelievable. This in turn makes for a viewer impossible to root for any of the portrayed characters.
The only thing slightly resembling fun during this movie is occasional grotesque imagery added purely for a shock value.
