Last Kind Words (2012)
Very Well Done
Last Kind Words is not your typical horror movie, that should be said up front. It is more suspenseful, more on the side of a mystery as the viewer tries to put the pieces together. There is no gore that you would find in a typical horror movie like Saw or Vile, but it draws you in nonetheless. Eli (Spencer Daniels) is a quiet, lonely type of boy who moves with his family to a very remote part of the woods. His father is a mean drunk who still finds time to pray and tell his son that he's going to burn in hell and his mother runs when there is conflict in the house. Eli meets Amanda (Alexia Fast) while walking and they strike up a friendship. It becomes clear that Amanda isn't your normal neighbor.
Last Kind Words can get a bit slow at times, you wonder who certain people are and how they fit into the story, but the movie is still compelling. Finding out how the characters are connected, knowing the secrets, the history, wondering how everything will play out, the viewer does want to know more. You feel sorry for a lot of the characters, I thought Brad Dourif's character, Waylon, was beautifully acted in regards to a misguided man acting out in a warped sense of love. Last Kind Words does something that a lot of horror movies miss, it actually answers questions and fills in the holes. A viewer doesn't have to do too much guessing to understand the plot which I appreciate. I recommend Last Kind Words for those looking for a wonderfully done movie with a great plot and great acting, for those not looking for the blood and screams, but still looking to be on the edge of their seat.
Creep Van (2012)
Not too bad, not that great
I wanted to like Creep Van a bit more than I actually ended up liking it by the time this movie was done. In the beginning, it was very promising, a van that automatically creeps you, it almost gave a Christine vibe. It probably would have been more interesting if it went that route as there is a very human driver behind the wheel.
So we have a psycho and we have Campbell, a bit unlucky in the job department but still manages to find work, bless his heart. Campbell likes co-worker Amy (she of the strong face) and they seem to hit it off, but Campbell needs a car. His call to a guy selling a van sets off a chain of events no one sees coming.
No one sees it coming......because there is no logic to it. I recommend that those who haven't watched Creep Van to do so only to simply form your own opinion, but quite honestly, Creep Van is a movie that is less tongue-in-cheek than it is annoying at times. No rhyme, no reason, no "OMG, its you!" at the end. The gore effects are, for the most part, decent. There are characters you might want to like, but they don't stay long.
All in all, Creep Van is a selection for when you have nothing else to watch. It is low budget, plot wanting, a bit lacking in the acting department, but as a fan of all things horror, I give it 5 out of 10. What's next, Scott McKinlay? Ready to try again?
Bijo no harawata (1986)
Wooooow......
Entrails of a Beautiful Woman is one of the weirdest, grossest, most sexually bizarre Japanese horror movie you will probably ever watch if you so choose to do so. Even when it starts out, things go left very quickly. A young girl looking for her sister only to be drugged and raped by a yakuza gang finds her way to an even younger looking psychologist's clinic. When the girl dies, the psychologist takes on the gang in her stead.
Suffice it to say that Entrails of a Beautiful woman is not a family movie by any means. You can not watch this with small children. This is purely adult horror. As horror movies go, it's not suspenseful or spine-tingling. Some of it gets a few laughs, but most of the time you're watching with your mouth open. It is graphic in a lot of scenes. If you are a fan of Japanese movies, you know that they can be over the top and sometimes just downright silly. Entrails of a Beautiful Woman is more over the top than silly, so if you choose to watch, you have been warned.
Bedfellows (2008)
Creepsville
3 minutes and a cast of 3 is truly all you need to be freaked out. It was by accident that I came across this short through my Tumblr feed (thanks to undeadcritic for the gif) and I immediately wanted to know more. I had to go searching for Bedfellows as I didn't realize that it wasn't a full length feature film, but Drew Daywalt and Fewdio do horror right with this one.
I found it on Youtube and trust me when I say that I was checking locks and windows. I'm not easily scared, but this is for the horror fans, the vets of the genre who want to be on the edge of their seats. I was almost disappointed that it wasn't an actual movie, but it gets the job of scaring the crap out of you done!
