True Detective: Night Country: Part 1 (2024)
Stop milking this franchise
I for one was intrigued by this season, especially with Jodie Foster, since she's a great actress who anyone can buy as a lead detective in any movie/show.
But this franchise just became a shadow of what season 1 presented. I remember even being into season 2 (although it really had its own storytelling problems), but this season just looks so netflix-esque. Your average setting, your average storytelling that we've seen in countless shows nowadays, and that's my main problem.
True detective used to "feel" different, you really felt like you were watching a movie split into episodes, as I mentioned before, even season 2 had some of that spark left. This new season has just become your average tv detective show that will still probably deliver some noteworthy acting/scenes, but that you'll easily forget once the "next thing"'comes in 1 or 2 weeks.
Overall it's not trash nor anything like it, but it's just average and a mere shadow of a show that went toe to toe with Breaking Bad's last season.
Mo fang fan (2023)
Good series that could've been shorter!
Honestly this series really surprised me, it's the first taiwanese series I've ever watched so I wasn't sure what to expect, and that really helped me enjoy it.
The overall story is the classic cat and mouse between the police and a serial killer that we've watched hundreds of times by now. But what copycat killer does better than the average crime story is the layers of some of its characters, they're not the simple "good guy does good things" and "bad guy is just bad", as the story keeps going on you can feel some sort of empathy with characters you shouldn't, and even dislike some of the "good guys".
Overall it's a good show that could've easily have less episodes, there are episodes where it seems that nothing really happens, but then the last 2 eps are really good.
Matilda: The Musical (2022)
If you can, go watch the West End or Broadway version
Matilda is probably one of my favorite Broadway musicals ever, mostly because it was one of the first ones I've ever heard when I was entering the musical world.
The musical numbers and the child performance are really on point, really liked Alisha Weir's performance as the main character. Plus the chemistry between the kids is really good, since they do look like good friends and not some random children thrown together (as often happens in films).
The main downside is the adult cast, outside of Emma Thompson, everyone just seems to be there, not sure who's to blame, if it's the script or the performers.
Miss Honey isn't as likable as she should, and most of her dialogue feels unnatural. But to be honest the same can be said about almost every adult character in this film.
Not awful in any means, the musical numbers and child performers are good, but nothing that really makes the film stand out from just watching the live musical (if you don't have access to it, then I would totally recommend you to watch the movie)
Crime Scene: The Times Square Killer (2021)
Boring and really overlong
While I always enjoy knowing about the context of the situation around serial killings, this documentary focus way too much on the Times Square sex booming rather than the killings. If they sold it as that I would've been fine with it, but they didn't.
It becomes overlong, tedious and boring, should've been a 1:30 documentary instead of a 3 episode mini series. They just didn't have enough material to fulfill more than 1 or 2 episodes.
Some of the "experts" they have aren't really offering anything new nor interesting every time they speak, it just becomes the same after the same.
The best part of this documentary comes from a survivor that tells her story, and gives you a real opinion on how difficult it was for her going through those times.
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations: Kawaki, akademî nyûgaku!! (2022)
Funny and sort of wholesome!
This episode has to be one of the funniest Boruto episodes I've seen.
It's a Kawaki/Himwari centered episode, and introduces new characters (that I hope we get to see them for at least 5-7 more eps), and it's really funny with a lot of Kawaki's change of behavior.
I know boruto has been "filled" with fillers since it's beginning, but the past mist arc and this one have been entertaining and good (although the animation leaves a lot to be desired).
Injustice (2021)
Could've been better, could've been worse
Overall I did ended up enjoying this movie, it has an ok storyline with some nice action and moral dilemmas.
But the animation was downright bad at several points, it's 2021 and looks cheaper than the 90's animated series.
I would've liked it to be split into 2 parts, because the story felt rushed at times and a lot of that final sequence could've used some more time.
Kudos for giving every moral perspective time tho! With such a political tone I was afraid they were going to turn this into a lecture (thinking of Red Son movie), but they gave proper chance to every perspective to be explained and sort of understood.
At the end, it isn't top tier DC Comics animation nor is it a low tier one, it just sits in the middle ground (similar to almost every recent DC outing tbh).
Cowboy Bebop (2021)
Awful casting choices, mediocre writing
I'm not one of those people that usually hates or dislikes any movie/series based on their casting, so that's why I gave this a chance but... all those complains about the casting were right.
They should stop hollywooding/marveling every movie and show that they want to make mainstream. One thing that anime fans like about it, it's that usually they "feel" different than what you're used to watch, this cowboy bebop adaptation just feels like an average medium budget show that we've seen hundreds of times already.
I don't think the actors are totally bad, they're just miscast and the dialogues surely don't help them.
Boruto: Naruto Next Generations: Bakeneko Densetsu (2021)
Worst episode of the year
I have to start this review saying that I'm a huge boruto fan, and enjoyed last weeks episode a lot.
Thought Wasabi vs Iwabe was going to be a great 3-7 min fight, but all we got was talking and an awful power up that will probably left forgotten.
This episode features a really cool tease with Shinki staring at Kawaki. And that's it.
Next weeks episode sure looks to be better (not a hard thing to achieve tho).
Godzilla vs. Kong (2021)
Same mistakes from past entries, but great action.
While overall I would recommend anyone that's interested in the movie to watch it, because it's a fun movie overall I just can't get past the fact that they insert too many human scenes that are unnecessary and not really entertaining at all. This movie could exist without the characters of Millie Bobby Brown and her "crew", they barely affect the trama until the end. Let me be clear that this is a story problem and not an acting one. Bichir's villain is too cartoonish and doesn't feel like a character from this cinematic universe, but Eiza's character is fun and enjoyable in some scenes. Overall, the movie is ok, offers some good fighting scenes (although we all knew they were going to team up at the end), but repeats similar mistakes from recent Godzilla movies.
