Amar Singh Chamkila (2024)

Imtiaz killed it with this one.

This movies keeps me hoping for the revival of Indian cinema. I honestly thought it was impossible, even for big budget artists, to make good movies anymore.

Diljeet was effortless in his role. The story was well written, the cinematography outstanding, and Rahman nailed the tone of the movie. Parineeti didn't have a huge role but the acting was still adequate. Not a dig at her acting, it's just that Chamkila as a character outshone everything else. There's not much else to say, but the fact that this movie should have made it to the big screen. On the other hand though, it wouldn't have made money and probably made sure that other such movies never make it to the big screen. At least Netflix probably paid a decent sum, making sure that movies that won't make big box office bucks will still have a platform.

I'd just like to let Imtiaz and other artists who are feeling the pressure to know that they should not give in to the trends. Keep accepting unique scripts like these, making movies which challenge you, and do not succumb to the pressures of box office targets. There will be people like me who'll gladly watch good stuff when it deserves a watch.

Animal (I) (2023)

Watch it for what it is.

It is NOT a movie for people seeking meaningful cinema. It is not a movie which has a strong, cohesive storyline. And it certainly doesn't have a protagonist who anyone should seek to be. But the movie is self-aware of the Animal that it has created, and that's it. Watch this movie for what it is - an adrenaline fueled 3.5 hour journey with some pretty good fights, great back-ground music and loud (both literally and methaphorically) characters who do oppulent and out-of -the-world stuff one would never dream of doing. Watch it like you would, a pornography - to see your wildest what-ifs played out on the big screen. There is something about this movie that leaves you shook and uncomfortable, but I liked it nevertheless. And to all those who think this is too gruesome and overtly sexualised, I hope you didn't feel any different about all the AltBalaji crap that keep you glued to your screens :)

Foundation (2021– )

There isn't a single thing wrong with it.

I have finally found a series which compels me to write a review. This show is, simply put, impeccable. I have tried hard but cannot find a single weakness. The acting is brilliant, the set design is a pleasure to the eyes and the music score makes my walls and ears rattle with pleasure. I can't believe that they managed to pull this off with her $45 million per season budget when HBO spent about $15 million per episode for GoT and prime video allegedly spent a billion on rings of power. This show has everything that other production studios can only dream to achieve. The story progresses in a well-paced manner and characters develop throughout the entire show. The CGI would probably make James Cameron hang himself. Most importantly, the story is gripping and keeps you brain cogs churning. At this point, I would also like to address all the book purists. You guys can go F yourselves for review bombing this show. A show's primary or even the secondary objective isn't to appease to the readers. Look at it as a standalone story and see how good it is. In fact, it will probably end up compelling people like me to read the books after watching it just because of how good the show itself was. Anyone who's contemplating whether to watch this show or not, do it and thank me later.

Andor (2022– )

Disney made me cry. For all the right reasons.

Let alone the SW universe, Disney had not been this good in a long long time. After hours of producing mediocre-at-best content with the recent stuff like she-hulk, hawk-eye, solo and the lot, I haven't been left this emotionally drained since my last girlfriend left me (and Captain America: Civil Wars of course). But this is a cinema experience like no other. And yes, I said cinema.

To the readers, go take a loan that you cannot pay off. Then buy a 4K OLED TV with it that you cant afford, get those ridiculously expensive surround sound systems that you keep hearing about on youtube, pay a professional thousands of dollars to perfectly tune them, break up with your partner/spouse so they don't interfere with the watching experience and keep some paper towels handy.

The acting, the storytelling, the cinematography, the score and the direction are all impeccable and nothing less. Diego Luna carries the show while Skarsgard and Serkis essentially guarantee the Emmys. I am in Love, and lost for words.

El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019)

The engind that breaking bad deserves but not the one it needs.

The movie was such a good epilogue to the rather vague ending of the series, which was open to lots of interpretation. However, the movie, in itself wasn't such a big deal. The world could have done without it. But now that it's there, its the same great storywriting and direction by Vince Gilligan that we all have come to miss, and it ties up well with the last episode. It provides as good a noatalgia trail as you would expect, while providing a satisfactory conclusion to the saga. I just hope it ends here, and there is no sequel. Netflix would better of not trying to rude the cash train here.
