Hatley High (2003)
It's the American football movie recast well as a chess piece ...
Staged in a small town that worships chess this movie kept me smiling all the way through. Even though it comes off as a play on the typical American "worship the football goods" type movie there are many of details that might not be apparent at first viewing. A combination of familial loss, new town acclimatization, cold war history and rook envy come together well in a movie fit for pretty much everyone.
The main character, Tommy, did a good job of coming across as a complicated young man who has the initial idea of who he is but still has the rough edges to work on. Hyacinth, well, other than everyone falling in love with her while she keeps Tommy dancing, I expect to see her again in more movies as she has a good energy that is transferred here.
This is a movie that makes me glad to be a Canadian!
Spider-Man 2 (2004)
Comic book to movie ... as good as it gets
Growing up with Spiderman has given me a lot of background for the stories presented by the Spiderman series. And considering all the comic books movies that have been released in the last years I will say that this adaptation is the best in my opinion. The story didn't stay exactly the same, but that can be understood, they've taken 30 years of comic storyline and compressed it into some of the best.
I won't continue babbling, it all sounds tripe after seeing the other 200 comments posted here. Just wanted to say that I liked it for what it is, a comic book turned into a good movie, it's not LotR, it's not a pretty Disney film filled with happy animals, it's a page from our childhood turned into another medium for us to enjoy.
