How to Train Your Dragon 2 (2014)
Classic phoenix theme on an epic scale
This deserves a round of applause. As some fellow reviewers have said kids as well as adults will have fun watching and re-watching it. I certainly will. Having seen the Dreamworks Dragons series as well as the first movie(multiple times), I believe I do justice in saying that this was a very apt culmination to the great build up. The emotions are more personal as all characters are grown up and allow the young adult generation to identify ideals such as sacrifice, leadership and love. At the same time, the maturity is shown only in glimpses to keep the realm still limited to childhood thereby keeping its younger audience spellbound. The decision to include such grand dragons and to include the lost hero like feeling in Hiccup gave the drama a very Arthur-esque touch. The bond between him and Toothless seems stronger than ever and is given ample screen time with enough ups and downs and the desire to perform that daring maneuver with perfection lasts till the end with a cliffhanger. While the last movie was about Hiccup changing others' views about dragons here he grows suddenly into responsibilities of a leader and is thrust in danger to lead his clan from its worst threat ever. Coming to the phoenix theme as we have seen in Harry Potter, Gladiator and Spartacus, the ultimate hero rises from the ashes of his loved ones. The resemblance is not lost here( for details watch the movie). But at the same time this serves a dual purpose as he also gains a new mission in life and finally understands his purpose. The finale of the whole extravaganza is not in hindsight. With an able captain at the helm a new script can maybe make this series a very successful trilogy.
Person of Interest: Liberty (2013)
Things are going to get complicated.
The third season has started with the addition of Shaw to the team of dead vigilantes. And though she is beautiful, she's dangerous. With Taraji P Henson and Jim Caviziel in their respective roles the new season has brought with it unknown possibilities. The Machine has hidden itself in an unknown location and has chosen Root to be her new contact in the world. Why though? Maybe we'll find out this fall. Now this is all about the last season.
This season is just beginning and the first episode reveals some hints as to what might come. Still everything is shrouded in the realm of uncertainty. The fate of Harold, John, Shaw, Carter and Fusco are too deeply connected now and we can only hope that there is no fallout from the government agency which was brilliantly tricked by the Machine. Although no new characters have been introduced yet, the day is still young and we'll never know what twist the fates may take though definitely the Machine does.
Until next week, that's all.
The Blacklist (2013)
It's a pity there are only 5 episodes.
Welcome back James. For fans of Boston Legal and The Practice, I'm sure you were waiting for him just as badly as I've been. Well our patience has been rewarded. He's here and not in a good way. His bad boy charm is infectious. Coupled with the beautiful Megan Boone as Elizabeth Keen the new albeit brilliant FBI Agent. Now the series might not have any educational value except maybe the lessons Spader gives in belittling authorities but with him on screen who cares about the rest. The show had an interesting beginning with Raymond 'Red' Reddington (Spader) surrendering before the authorities and we are treated to the carnival that follows such an unexpected event. He's kept under a security tighter than the President. Well he's valuable.
The audience is on for some serious action, mind games (the best kind) and the dynamic (I hope not of romantic nature) between Keen and Red that will be the highlight of the show. In the background a lot of Law Enforcement officials will be actively working for their small screen presence but somehow the fate will transpire to put Keen in spotlight and danger as she will traverse through the myriad web that is terrorism to make sure that her country is safe from all threats whether foreign or domestic. Well this is a time tested premise and might just go down in a flurry of clichéd moments.
I really am the big jar full of hope, aren't I? But do not forget Red or specifically Spader. If I know him as well as I think then he's going to keep things extremely interesting all through this fall.
Keen gives a chilling description of herself which I'll let the viewers find out for themselves. A married FBI agent, she has her charms and things don't bode well for Red if she is what she says.
So between these 2 I'm sure my Tuesdays are going to be awesome. Hang in there people. If you've seen the pilot then you've just broken through the crust. The multi-layered filling that's James Spader is just a scratch away from oozing out and making your life as good as mine.
Sleepy Hollow: Pilot (2013)
This just went on my weekly calender.
I am an advocate of reading books rather than watching adaptations, and for this reason when I sat down to watch the Pilot I almost gave up in the beginning considering it to be another run of the mill Sleepy Hollow remake but what I saw was pretty fascinating. They seem to have only used The Horseman and Ichabod Crane and the original conflict that was at the heart of The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is rendered just that, a legend with no mention anywhere. There are several elements that will allow for a thrilling plot, if played right. Although it seems like a lot of the elements in contemporary American horror will be incorporated, the good thing is that they never said anything about using the Irving classic to the detail. The underlying mysteries are far too many in number and as is the vogue, you are in for betrayals and cowardice and petty human nature making the drama enjoyable. While there are many biblical associations there is nothing new on the table. The undertones of witchcraft and the eternal fight between good and evil is there. Well, you need something.
Considering Len Wiseman's association with the Underworld franchisee I had some idea of what was in store for me. And he delivered.
The work by Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane is commendable as is Nicole Beharie as Abbie Mills. At present the cast is small but you never know when new players enter the scene.
So while the fall brings with it many new shows those interested in mysteries and drama and have no aversion to a little gore might want to give this small series a try. After all its only 5 episodes. Sit back and enjoy.
