X (2022)
Should have released the prequel first.
We watched the prequel first, and I have to say - knowing Pearl's story ahead of time allowed us to understand X much better than if we hadn't. Pearl should have been released first, and X as the sequel - X would have made a LOT more sense. X on its own is just weird, gross, and disturbing. Maybe that's what the director was going for? If so - mission accomplished! Pearl was on another level - we really enjoyed that one a lot. Mia Goth is a great actress and really showed her range in that film. Not so much in X.
Other than that, pretty standard slasher with all of the usual elements and over the top gore. Very slow moving at first with gratuitous shock-value murder scenes and the usual final girl formula.
The Terminal List (2022)
Fabulous show - back to basics! Chris Pratt is fantastic. Just please, for the love of God, drop the dark/noir filter!
I'm seriously enjoying this show. This is the kind of entertainment we've been needing so desperately. No woke politics, no BS, just plain old good TV that lets you unwind after a day of madness. Chris Pratt is at his best! He really shines in this role, and I hope to see him in more roles like this. My very only complaint is the dark filter. On the sunniest of LA days, it looks like they're in the dark. I have to struggle in many scenes to see what's going on. I'm not sure why some shows/movies lately think this is the way to go, but it seriously is NOT. Or at the very least, maybe not have such a heavy hand about it. With less of a dark filter, this is a 10/10, hands down.
Demigod (2021)
Don't believe the 6.3 star rating - totally fake
We were fooled into thinking this movie was worthy of the 6.3 rating it had when we discovered it, but clearly this is not an honest reflection of the film, because this is one TERRIBLE movie. Unbelievably boring and slow. The acting wasn't too terrible (though the one-eyed witch was pretty awful, everyone else was merely mediocre), and the story could have been a decent one, but instead they ruined what could have been a suspenseful ancient tale. In addition, pretty much every scene had the characters do at least one incredibly stupid thing. Eye-rolling level stupid things. The music track was entirely inappropriate - slow and melodic instead of anything that built up some kind of suspense, and it would have fit better over a 1970's romance film. If you care about how you spend the next couple of hours, move on from this fake-review-fest and find something worth your time.
The Little Things (2021)
Extra points for leaving out SJ topics
I just want to thank Hollywood, Denzel Washington, and Rami Malek for not forcing any social justice topics into this film. I am seriously grateful for the lack of all of that. Every little part of our society has been so pummeled by the "lessons" that some seem to think we all need to learn that there is hardly ever an opportunity to just enjoy some downtime anymore. Sometimes you just want some entertainment, with no politics. In fact that's very often the case, but there never seems to be an escape from it anymore. This movie provides that escape. Additionally, it's Denzel, and he's just as amazing in this movie as he is in all the others he's starred in. I've never seen a Denzel film that I didn't love, and this one is no exception. Rami Malek is also fantastic in this movie as he always is. They make a great team!
And for the record, I loved the ending, which I will not include any spoilers about here. Keep up the good work Denzel, Rami and Hollywood, and make more titles like this one, please!
Into the Dark: My Valentine (2020)
If Hollywood would spend less time trying to be politically correct, it might be able to produce something that doesn't suck
Like all of the Into The Dark episodes of late, this one plays fully into political correctness with its message of female empowerment and male toxicity. It's getting old, fast. Actually, it got old a couple of years ago. Hollywood needs to get its head out and stop playing into the ridiculous stereotypes, because there are only a handful of stories that seem to be getting produced anymore, just with different actors and actresses. If it isn't male toxicity and female empowerment, it's racism, or climate change, or the need for diversity. And that about sums up every script hitting all screens big and small for more than a few years now. Please, for the love of God, some originality? Of the remaining two stars - 1 is for the catchy nature of the music, which probably would have been better off released on its own rather than with this tired film. And the final star is for the acting, which in and of itself was pretty decent.
